If you have never had contact in any way with a tribe of humans running into you, how could they possibly have a "scary reputation"? There had been no-one who could give them that reputation. The narrator of the clip is of course overly dramatic (maybe he was trying to get a voice-over job in commecials ). The content is a also pretty thin. The sagas, impressive as they are and often with more than a kernel of truth, aren't exactly eye witness accounts. No doubt there were skirmishes between the (few) Norse and the locals, there is very little if any conclusive archaelogical evidence - outside the L'Anse aux Meadows settlement of 1021, and some small evidence of iron smelting in the North East of the US. (Iron smelting was unknown in America at the time). One of the possible reasons for the short stay could be as easy as logistics. The Norse had no element of surprise, they did not have a clear techonological advantage, and the lines of communication back to Greenland and Iceland were very long. The fate of the Norse Greenlanders some four centuries later cannot have been a factor (the small size of those settlements would ). The Norse did reach America, settles for a short period in Newfoundland, explored the coastline, met the locals, traded with them and fought them on occasions. The rest are more or less fantastical embellishments.

Always loved Vikings since seeing the 1964 film "The Long Ships" at the cinema when I was a kid. Plus the 1958 film "The Vikings" on the TV. Both classic Technicolor epic movies.

Have you done or considered doing a video about Thomas Cochrane? One of Britain's most famous sailors, possibly second only to Nelson (both living at the same time in history). TC was known as both The Sea Wolf and in later years when he helped to liberate Chile and Brazil he was know as el diablo by the spanish. absolutely worth a 2 or 3 part video series

Hey Connor...this was a really good one. I have a short video to suggest from another channel...I will post it in a comment to this comment to prevent YT from deleting it. I am pretty sure you have reacted to this other channel before...and it is a sub-5 minute long video, so I really hope to see you react to it on the channel. ✌

If you have not ever seen it, you should definitely watch Erik the Viking. It is a comedy that was made by Terry Jones of the Monty Python crew, and it is pretty hilarious. This recommendation goes for Connor and anyone else who happens to read it. ✌💯😁

Wow, that's so cool as an American interested in this to see that vikings could have visited your area. Wouldn't be surprised if they will find some viking items there sometime.

There are very little written sources from that time, and what happened, in reality none. And as they said mot was written by a monk a couple of hundreds year later, with a Christian touch. The Vikings was most explorer and traders, but had a different view of “ownership”. There are two things I believe matters regarding to visiting America. On is that the Vikings had a well function law-system in place, and one of the penalties was to be exiled. That cause a problem for the “bad guys” it they become exiled from Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland. To travel south to Scotland, England and France was not a good idea, but west was an option. The distances from Greenland over to America is not far, and presumable a trip that was done frequently. So you could wonder who the first Northerners was. Unfortunately, there are very few remains from Vikings settlements, when the buildings was of turf and wood. But they did manage and forged iron, that did not practice in America. Trace of iron production indicate that the Viking was there. The second thing, that he almost mention was that here in Scandinavia we have a tradition to drink a lot of milk and eat cheese, that was not common among native Americans, in fact a lot of them are lactose intolerant. Think about a meeting between two cultures were they do not share any language, the normal thing is to sit down and have a friendly meal……… When then the native American become very sick, and none of the Vikings, the only conclusion must be that they tried to poison the native Americans. Try to explain that without a language……….

The New world was simply to populated and to far away for the Scandinavians to settle it. The world would have been quite different if they managed to though. Maybe another Germanic Scandinavian language would have dominated the world? Still the mere fact that they managed to get across the Atlantic and settle there speaks to there hardiness and skill. Many early colonies failed after Columbus rediscovery of the Americas.

I read somewhere that a particular native American tribe has Norse DNA in the female mitochondrial DNA which indicates a female lived and procreated in that tribe. What doors will DNA open for us?

Can you please respond to anything Michiel de Ruyter related? I think he's such an underrated (though he does get attention, but not nearly enough) admiral, and among at least the top 10 of the world. Undertaking the famous raid on the Medway, also called the worst British naval defeat in history (but he did so much more) I think without him, the '''disaster year'' as it was called in the Netherlands, the moment in which the Netherlands was invaded/being declared war on by German states, France and Britain, would have certainly succeeded, and the Netherlands as we know it today wouldn't exist. So he's a total hero to me. Crazy to think such a tiny nation could've held back such superpowers:) I've been binge-watching your content this holiday and it has given me so much entertainment! I absolutely fucking love the vibe you have in these videos, you stop videos when you want to know something (better) instead of being like oh let's continue, it'll be alright, no, you're so serious about learning stuff and it is absolutely amazing. I hope you had a great new years eve and will have a great 2022:)
