Stewart Lee is comedy genius!! As a Scotsman and a historian I am proud that we can laugh at ourselves!! On the subject of "Braveheart" Most Scot's love it! Even knowing that its mostly wrong! The real story of Wallace is far more interesting! However, after several pints historical accuracy goes well out the window and everyone is shouting aboot "Freedom"!! Someone will be bound to say "Is there no a Bridge supposed to be involved at the Battle of Stirling Bridge?" at that point most of us are so drunk that the blue faces and historical accuracy is irrelevant and majority cry is "F**k the Bridge and F**k the English!" We then we calm doon about an hour later! Then we apologise to our English girlfriend and ask her if she could kindly order a kebab!

The thing to remember with Stewart Lee is that absolutely everything is deliberate and that he almost always means the opposite of what he's saying. The joy of watching him comes from never knowing quite why you're laughing in the first place, which is something he also plays on. As much as it is a cliche that is always rolled out when it comes to him, he is absolutely in a different league to other comedians. FYI, he does a really great section about Dave Chapelle in his latest show, Tornado.

@@MetaFootballTV it was a more generalising comment on Stewart Lee's style of comedy (to familiarise someone who hasn't really got their head around him yet) rather than a comprehensive statement about his actual life details, which of course will refer to autobiographical. I'm making the point here that Lee isn't actually just ripping apart the Scottish - it's far more nuanced than that. But thank you for the fact checking service, which I found greatly entertaining.

I must say, you are the first person I’ve seen reacting to this that actually “got it” and appreciated the balls of this performance. For an American audience, I’d liken it to a New Yorker coming to the Deep South and saying that Robert E Lee (or alternatively Jesus) was gay. Stewart Lee is hard to “get” without the context of the entire performance as well as the context of previous performances (as each tour sort of builds on the previous). So you get a big attaboy for getting it so well.

I've seen Lee twice. He's the quickest, most erudite comic I've ever seen. He carries the audience, never insults their intelligence, and his call backs are legendary. He was heckled once with "stop going on about Brexit" and he replied "you've obviously never been to one of my gigs. I'll make people laugh, you won't understand those, then I'll tell a bit then go on too long about something and then close the call back. Get comfy."

Your comment about finding Stewart Lee "more interesting than funny" is something Stew has used in his act! He comments on his own act - during his act! - and has said before that, when people who've watched him are asked "Did you find the show funny?" they can at least reply "No. But I agreed the fuck out of it". He's not a laugh-a-minute comedian but he's the most aware, intelligent and still very funny comedian out there. He’s brilliant at holding a mirror up to the audiences prejudices. Much like in the Osama Bin Laden clip, the audience thinks he’s laughing and mocking Americans prejudice and the audience laughs with him but he turns it round at the end to show the audiences prejudice towards Americans for being so ready to accept what he was saying as true. And that’s just one layer to the routine, he’s a complete master of the art, there’s so much depth to what he does. A more recent ballsy routine he did was his show "Content Provider” filmed in Southend which was a heavily leave voting in the Brexit referendum. He went on to call everyone that voted leave a Cunt & a Racist over and over again. The fact he not only get away with it but also gets everyone laughing is a testament he’s skill.

The saddest thing about the film, is that many Scots (I'm half Scottish myself) HAVE taken it to be historically accurate, to the extent that the statue of Wallace, at the Scottish National Memorial site, is a depiction of Mel Gibson from the film! Also, whilst it's true that historically inaccurate entertainment can act as an incentive to research the real history, the vast majority of people never bother to do so. This was definitely the case with this film. Instead it was used to stir up rabid nationalism and racial hatred and was exploited politically by the Scottish National Party.

Every time I ever watch this set I notice something new and appreciate it even more than I did before! It is hilarious and intelligent on so many levels! One of the reasons I love it so much is because I'm Scottish! Anyone that thinks this is offensive and degrading to us is stupid as f**k. He perfectly sets up the crowd by initially mocking things about the English before poking fun at Scots so you can't laugh at one and not the other without being a hypocrite and Scots pride themselves on being able to take a joke etc. Whilst on the surface it seems like he is just being an English guy slagging us in some stereotypical prejudicial manner it is so much more intelligent than that. He correctly highlights how historically inaccurate Braveheart etc is. The underlying humour is actually targeting Mel Gibson, Catholicism and the irony in choosing this person as our national hero. Wallace is played by Mel who is a devout Catholic which is a religious organisation plagued with paedophilia over the years especially here in Scotland. He throws further insult at them by insisting Wallace was actually gay. This is actually a nod to how accepting Scotland has become regarding gay rights etc so joking about scotlands hero Wallace being gay is quite fitting. If you can't laugh at yourself and take a slagging then you shouldn't dish it or be cool with laughing at everyone else! You can always tell when someone is genuinely joking or if they're being a dick!

Dude, on your comments on liking history stuff, there's a british kids tv show called 'Horrible Histories', it's great, there's a load of clips and sketches on youtube, you should check them out. P.s. Despite it being a kids show, it's still a fun watch for adults.

Thing to remember is that lowland Scots are harder on each other than an English can genetically ever be. Lee's apparent dismissive attitude towards those denizens of Northern parts would, North of the border, be regarded as a declaration of love.

Braveheart, to me, is the single greatest piece of stand up ever performed. Stewart Lee is a genius.

Stew does tend to play to Stewart Lee audiences - people who get his deconstruction of humour and are down for it. He has been known to apologise during his shows to those who have been brought along by friends with the recommendation that “this guy is really funny” and are now sitting there thinking “Is this it?”.

Lee was voted the World's Greatest Comedian by, I believe, it was the Guardian or The Times. He really is a genius. He was a student of ancient languages at Cambridge University, He went on to form a comedy partnership with Richard Herring. At one time they had a comedy tv show. Then they split up. Lee went on to bigger and better things. He really does use that brain of his in his comedy. Lee had his own comedy series for 3yrs. Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle. I believe you can root out these 30-minute shows on YT. It is a matter of pride with him to work, intelligently within the constraints of political correctness, and wokeness and still be hilariously funny. He always finds great angles to broach touchy subjects. He is also brilliant at highlighting bigotry.

In Britain we’ve been arguing and fighting for a while now, some of the insults can be a bit nasty but if done without a drink and with intelligent piss talking it’s fine

Your synopsis of your first reaction ("I found it more interesting than funny.") reminds me of a Stewart Lee joke. He likes it when people are asked, "Did you find it funny?" and they answer, "No, but I agreed the fuck out of it."

I'm English and have no problem with Braveheart. Other than William Wallace was never known as Braveheart. Never painted his face blue. Never wore a kilt and there was a bridge at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Oh, and the Princess.

People go on about AL Murray who just regurgitates information that is pretty basic. This man challenges pre conceptions and makes you think which is far more dangerous to do?

This was in Glasgow in 1997, he did a few of these venues up here and still does, and he went down a storm with these ones, and being from Glasgow i do indeed worship Wallace and love my shortbread and heroin. Lll
