The incredible thing about this, is that despite Lee breaking character and describing exactly the kind of satire that he had employed and what he was satirising, the Daily Mail still wrote an article about the piece. In it, they somehow completely missed the satire and took Lee's comments as his legitimate thoughts about Hammond. The article is entitled: "What prompted comedian's tirade against old schoolmate Richard Hammond?".

Stewart Lee genuinely doesn’t like Clarkson. Interestingly one of Clarkson’s daughters mentioned in Lee’s routine has publicly criticised her father many times over his ridiculously nasty comments in newspapers. Most people who aren’t fans of his, like myself, merely ignore him or refer his fans to this video where Lee neatly sums up the Clarkson style.

Stewart Lee is brilliant ,I absolutely adore his show 'if you prefer a milder comedian'( that this is from) it's probably my favourite comedy show ever, not just of his. The 'pear cider' ending is total genius He is the master of the slow burn, the rant and the call back. But one of my favourite things about him, is how he turns on half the audience and berates them for not laughing enough, he will totally roast them. It's kinda what he is known for. He really is a master at controlling the room and is also known as the comedian's comedian. Please do the pear cider bit of this show!

I think you'd really love watching one of his whole stage shows, they're beautifully written and constructed, he does a piece about being on holiday in a bar when 9/11 happened, and the whole aftermath of his story revolves around him unifying a culturally diverse group of people with a fart, so funny, he also did a BBC series where he just films 30 min segments of stand-up, that's brilliant, the liberal Intelligentsia thing is a bit of stage persona which he relies on heavily to upset a lot of the British press, for his own amusement it seems most of the time, it certainly hasn't done his career any favours, which I always think is a feather in his cap, he stands by what he does and continues to carve a career even though it could so easily backfire on him, he's rarely on mainstream tv, panel shows and such like other comics of his generation.

I think the term ‘Liberal' carries different meanings in the US than in Europe.
@duffman18
@duffman18 8 дней назад
That is true, in most of the world the "Liberal" party is the right wing party. That was true in the US too. The parties swapped in the middle of the 20th century. Originally the Republicans were the left wing party and the Democrats were the right wing party. That's why a Republican president ended slavery, he was a left wing President, Abe Lincoln. That's why the Democrats are the blue party and the Republicans are the red party despite the fact it's the opposite of that everywhere else, red especially being famously a left wing colour, hence why the communists love the colour red. But in the mid 20th century, the parties swapped. Because a lot of Democrats were racist, and didn't like the whole idea of civil rights. They also didn't like FDR's New Deal. So all the racist Democrats went and joined the Republican party, and all the Republicans who didn't like how their party was being overrun by right wing racists joined the Democrat party. They swapped, and forever after, the Democrats are the left wing party and the republicans are the right wing party. So that's why "liberal" is a left wing term in the US but pretty much everywhere else it's a right wing term. _HOWEVER..._ despite everything I've written here, the way Stewart Lee is using the word "liberal" in this stand up routine _IS_ the same way Americans use it. He's saying it as a left wing term, that he's a left wing liberal. You see? It's also because in the UK we have the Liberal Democrat Party, the biggest party that aren't the main two of Labour and the Conservatives. And the Lib Dems are a centrist party but they do kinda lean left somewhat. So I guess they're more centre-left really. So that's part of why Stewart Lee can use "liberal" as a left wing term in this stand up routine and we know that that's what he means, he's not using it in the sense most countries use it.

Stewart Lee is the only comedian we have produced in the last 30 years. His entire works. Nay! every word he has ever spoken or thought should be transcribed, catalogued and preserved in the finest cardboard boxes that money can buy and stored on top of a mountain or a really high wardrobe like the one at my Nan's.

Stewart Lee isn't so much political as a guy who has, from time to time, pointed out how dumb a lot of political things are. And in doing so, got branded as part of the "Metropolitan Liberal Elite" which he wholeheartedly leaned into as part of his persona. I mean, he definitely IS a progressive, but the comedy persona is more an antagonistic response to his portrayal in the British press. He really likes to push people's buttons. The more the press write about him being "woke" the more he grinds his teeth and leans into it. Not to appeal to the left, but to piss off the idiots who believe whatever they read in tabloids.

Hammond got his "Hamster" nickname even before he got into Top Gear, when he was doing radio. He does get called Hamster a lot on Top Gear, specially by Clarkson, whom in return he calls "The Orangutan". May is often called Captain Slow. It's true that the specials are probably the coolest to watch, but their banter on the studio is hilarious as well. As for Stewart Lee I'd never seen him before. He was funny, but halfway through I was wondering whether he was just joking, or whether his joking was really just a sad excuse for his own bitterness. Now, I don't often ask myself that question about a comedian, usualy I just laugh and apreciate the cleverness, presuming it's there, of course. So, anyway, I was waiting to see how Lee would end this bit; I mean, if he ended it with self-deprecation, then I'd know it was really just a joke. Oh, but he did better, so much better! He did exactly what the Top Gear guys did. I'm a fan now.

NO, I'd sooner watch my grandmother pass away alone and in agony, than watch that woke idiot a minute longer.

@@philjones6054 I'd definitely rather watch your grandmother pass away. Can we have tickets? Dude, they're just jokes. If you don't find him funny then simply don't watch him.

I love that this comment section is completely comprised of praise or people who don’t understand the satire of the ridiculous hyperbole of old middle class white men as typified by the show Top Gear 😂
