Hadrians Wall was never about keeping the Scots out, and has never marked the border between England and Scotland. The western end of the wall is just a few miles south of the present border, but the eastern end is over 60 miles to the south of the border. The course of the wall runs right through what is now the city of Newcastle (which is the main city in North East England) with most of the city lying to the north of its route. (I’m about half a mile away from it myself). The Romans did go further north and actually built the Antonine Wall across central Scotland, but it wasn’t sustainable and so they retreated south of Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall wasn’t an impenetrable barrier, it could be entered and exited and was often used as a means of controlling trade.

The Romans were in Scotland. There was a huge camp at Trimontium (now Melrose) and Antonine built a wall between Bearsden nr Glasgow and Falkirk Nr Edinburgh. There was also a fort in Crammond (Edinburgh). There is also a legend of the 9th Legion that invaded Scotland but never returned.

The Romans liked to use natural borders (mountains, rivers). They offer a clear physical distinction between Rome and Not-Rome and are much easier to control and defend (Of course the roman influence often extended far beyond the actual borders of the empire. Rome didn't just suddenly end somewhere, it was surrounded by a sphere of influence). But when there wasn't a clear natural border, the Romans just build one, like the Limes ("Lee-mess") between Rhine and Danube, or Hadrian's Wall. It made it easier to control who was crossing the border and it prevented pictish raiders from plundering roman territory. And the wall was of course much higher than it is today. ;)

Those lands around the borders, especially as the border was always changing, was like the Wild West. The inhabitants were constantly being raided by both armies, their men taken to fight, their crops and goods stolen to feed the troops, on both sides. All that was left to them was constant cattle rustling and fighting. Most of my ancestors were these people, known as Reivers, Border Raiders, Border Riders, or Border Names, as certain family names because famous. Armstrong was one such, and yes I have Armstrong in my ancestry, and at least six other border names. It's a fascinating bit of history actually, including the Great Curse issued by the then Bishop of Glasgow against these people. The Border Riders weren't just about fighting though, they were tough inependent people who loved poetry and music.

Hadrian's wall had many purposes, it was the 'Official' border of Rome but the army patrolled beyond it to maintain peace, it made raids on Roman lands more difficult as any stolen property had to be lifted over the wall whilst being chased or attacked by the Centurions and it was a statement of power - (We have the resources to build a wall the entire width of this country during peacetime, we have much greater resources for dealing with war.)

It is very difficult to completely subdue a determined guerrilla campaign in mountainous terrain; Afghanistan taught the USSR and the West that in modern times. The Romans reached the same conclusion 2,000 years earlier.

In 1996 there was a mass school shooting where 16 children and one teacher were killed. Nothing since then. Thats 26 years with no school killings. Since 2000, there have been 12 school massacres each with other 5 murders, several above 20. There have also been over 250 school shooting incidences resulting in less than 5 murders. It is shocking to us here in the UK with extremely tight gun control just how easy it is to buy guns in the US. And every time it happens you get religious people offering their prayers. Personally, you can forget prayers, they don't work. If they did, there wouldn't be school shootings in the first place.

The Picts refused to offer Rome a pitched battle. The only reason why they did at the battle of Mons Grapius was because the Romans destroyed their crops and food storage which forced them to attack. Otherwise they would just launch raids on forts in the middle of the night and cause general mayhem that way. Back then the land was covered in forests, so they could hide in there. Now most of Scotland has been stripped bare of trees etc..

I've always heard about that Berwick "peace treaty" theory, and I don't believe it. In the 19th century, declarations of war would have been made by the United Kingdom, not separately. I think if we look into the history of this old wives' tale, my theory is that it originated as a story about the War of Spanish Succession against France, which England and Scotland began as two countries and ended as one country. Even then, I'm sure, they would have counted Berwick as legally included in England.

In the 16th and 17th centuries the town, being “of the kingdom, but not in it”, was specifically mentioned in Royal Proclamations, Statutes and the Book of Common Prayer, etc. The Wales and Berwick-upon-Tweed Act of 1746 declared and enacted “that in all cases where the kingdom of England or that part of Great Britain called England, hath been or shall be mentioned in any Act of Parliament, the same has been and shall henceforth be deemed and taken to comprehend and include the Dominion of Wales and Town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.” So in the Union with Scotland Act 1706 is has Discipline and Government thereof as by Law established within the Kingdoms of England and Ireland the Dominion of Wales and Town of Berwick upon Tweed and the Territories thereunto belonging.

Hadrian did not stop because he thought wasn't worth it, he definitely wanted and tried to conquer Scotland ,and he did try had to build the wall in the end to establish the boundary once he realised that he wasn't going to make it any further north because of the notoriously heavy resistance of the ancient people in Scotland then once that wall was built it was the northern most point of the whole Roman empire , and the wall was mainly put there like I say as a defensive structure and a basic boundary that was manned and guard to stop attacks and raiders by but who were frequently engaged by people from the didn't hesitate to come from Scotland to attack the Romans and or there towns settlements, especially if they needed to Feed their families and the Romans were trying to hoard the food supplies or something like that , the Scottish were not to be taken lightly so the Romans found out 💯👊🗡

Something stinks about the foundation of Hadrian's Wall. I suspect a cover-up. There may have been a massive native rebellion about 118 AD. Only a much-later Roman historian mentions it. And then there is rhe disappearance of the Ninth Legion. Now the Roman Legions were massive units which usually lasted most of the history of the Empire., but after 118, the Ninth briefly appears ( in the modern Netherlands) once more, about 120 AD, but otherwise mysteriously disappears. This mystery was written about by Rosemary Sutcliffe, giving rise to two major films, the second one with Channing Tatum. I find the most plausible explanation to be that the unconquered tribes in what is now Scotland may have joined together with the conquered tribes in England in rebellion. Something important happened, because the new Emperor Hadrian - who admittedly visited his Empire a lot - came over and got built the most impressive fortifications of his reign anywhere in the Empire. Was it to separate the two lots of tribes? Later, Hadrian's successor Antoninus Pius built a wall further north, between the Firths of Clyde and Forth; but this was soon abandoned, in favour of Hadrian's Wall again, which is still impressive to see today.

The Romans did make it into Scotland and did actually go quite far north (in small numbers), but the mountainous terrain and the fact the Scots/Picts were vicious fighters meant that it wasn't worth it for them and they eventually decided that the 70 mile wall was the best option.
@DeadlyDan
@DeadlyDan 2 года назад
This isn't strictly true, the Romans firstly could have pushed on and taken Scotland BUT Emperors kept getting assassinated. For example "The Year of The Six Emperors" occurred whilst the Romans occupied parts of Scotland. All this infighting meant the Scottish could re-take the lands north of Hadrian's wall. (Bernicia etc). The wall itself was placed there to protect trade and control movement of people not prevent crossing or wars (hence why it's short). During this period Scottish tribes were raiding Roman villages and towns which was devastating to the local economy, exacerbated more by the fact Britain became isolated from Rome during the latter years of its existence as an empire.

Scotland doesn't exist until 8th century that area was the old north hen googled In Welsh. So the romans and Scotland had nothing to do with each other and the oldest border is offas Dyke which was built in 8th century between Saxon England and Wales. Hadrians wall was a wall not a border between to countries hadrians wall divided south Britain from northern Britain. When the romans were in Britain the Scottish were a Irish tribe called the scoti that invaded northern Britain in 7-8th century modern Scotland has nothing to do with this time period......but don't tell the scotts it upsets them because the English have been in Britain longer
