As an American who's been living in Australia for almost 14 years now, this video hits different. It's as if I am watching my internal dialogue give a Ted talk over the past 14 years. I was born in the US but at the point I consider my self Australian. I say mate more than some Aussies I know, C*** no longer shocks me as it does Americans. I've been part of many Aussie Aussie Aussie chants and I've burnt the ever living hell out of my mouth because I didn't bother letting my meat pie from the servo cool down before shoving it in my gob.

To clarify shrimp and prawns are actually two distinct animals. Though both belong to the family of marine life called Decapod crustaceans, the various types of shrimp each fall under the suborder Pleocyemata, while prawn species belong to the Dendrobranchiata suborder. Prawn has three pairs of legs while shrimp has only two however, at the end of the day Australians don't care and call them both prawns.

Thanks, I didn't realize.. I though Prawn/Shrimp were just common generic names like Cat, Dog, Corn/Maze etc. > [edit] Yeah I just checked, We call both gene lines "Prawn" in Australia. So prawn is the common generic name we use. That being said we also do know the different species.
@markleon411
@markleon411 Год назад
Very good explanation. I was going to comment but your answer was way more thorough. I think the confusion lies in the fact that Americans tend to call both, "Shrimp" and most Australians call them both "Prawns". As in, "Shrimp Cocktail" and "Prawn Cocktail" Both are actually made with Shrimp. Whereas, in Australia, we tend to specify types of prawns more, such as, Green Prawns or King Prawns.
@axle.australian.patriot
@axle.australian.patriot Год назад

You are a true Aussie at heart mate. You say how we Aussie have a great outlook on life and living it, that should be modelled after by the rest. I gotta say thanks, and I do agree ..... but truth be told, I find unless people from elsewhere are open minded, and willing to accept that our sometimes harsh sounding words and ways truly are just said and done in jest, and often even lovingly, then they will just call us crude and unrefined and want us kept far away from their loved ones. I kid you not. I once spoke to a fella on a chat forum made for those who are struggling with cancer in any of it stages including survivors and family members who are going through it with them or have lost loved ones to cancer. It was an Australian forum, made by a couple of Aussies, a husband and wife who were dealing with her cancer diagnosis and was frequented by mainly Aussies. But of course, we welcomed anyone from anywhere if you needed others to talk with who were going through these things. This fella who reached out, on an Aussie forum, and chastised me for calling him mate. He was from England and his name was Charles and told me not to be rude and to call him by his name, Charles, never Charlie, and certainly not mate. All I did was welcome him to the forum by saying "Welcome mate, how ya goin'. Hope we can help you with what you need here.". That was apparently very rude. That's fine, to each his own, I just never interacted with him again. You are more open and accepting that a great many unfortunately, but lucky for us, we found you ! You have also shown us that not all Yanks are backwards hillbilles, and that some of you even have brain cells. You are a wonderful fella and you have a lovely, beautiful family and we thank you for sharing yourself and them with us. We are more the richer for it.

So, depending on how you look at it, Canada as it currently exists is just over 20 years old. More fun: They needed a name for the new province, and were taking suggestions. The most popular suggestion was "Bob's Your Uncle". Then you can look into their largest original oil and gas company, Petro Canada, which was _originally_ going to be called Oil Canada, but someone objected when they realized this would be shortened to Oil Can. :)

One other thing people get wrong is Australia wasn't settled by convicts. It was over a period of 84 years 184,000 convicts were sent to Australia. There Time deepened on what they did. 3 to 5 years were mostly the sentences. But once their time was served they had the option to return to England. Only 3% of those stayed in Australia and started a new life for themselves. Those who returned had families.

Mate! If you want to see an Aussie movie about the Homicidal (Brumbys) wild horses, then check out The Man from Snowy River! With great High Country scenery and Kirk Douglas as the lead actor. Movie was set In 1914-1918!

Prawns are found in Oz in salt water shrimps are found in fresh water along with yabbies and fresh water lobsters. Shrimps are big enough to cook for a BBQ I wouldn't bother with them, yabbies can be cooked up and in most states the fresh water lobster is illegal to catch coz there numbers are very low. So if you want that sort of thing on the BBQ go the prawn there easier to come by and the most likely to be chucked on the BBQ and cook up some blue swimmer crabs too for a decent feed.

I’d call shrimp freshwater, prawns as saltwater. We catch shrimp from the Murray as fish bait and I’ve never heard of anyone eating them.

G'day mate .. Aussie here .. how they hanging? 🙂 Seriously though .. this video was generally pretty close to describing your typical Aussie (Ozzy) and it sort of boils down to having a 'fun loving' but in the main, 'realistic' outlook on life. We tend to have a 'work to live' attitude rather than a 'live to work' one. Maybe living in a society where we actually care about one another and don't mind paying a little extra in our taxes to make sure others not so well off are looked after .. helps! Little things like a month+ fully paid annual leave (vacation) and 'Universal Healthcare' system that means you can access decent medical care if you should ever need it, gives you a great feeling of 'peace of mind' and that sort of thing in itself gives you freedom to enjoy life to the full. Anyhow .. have to sign off now .. need to take my pet kangaroo for a hop around the block.

@IWrocker, prawns are shrimp, and shrimp are prawns, but yabbies aren't! 😂😂 Fun Fact: The Paul Hogan commercial (ad) where he says "Put (or chuck) another shrimp on the barbie" was originally made with him calling them prawns, but as the commercial (ad) was generally made for the American audience, the American Tourist Board (or whatever they're called) didn't think Americans would know what prawns are, and requested the commercial be re-shot with him calling them shrimp instead. As the commercial (ad) was played here too.......a LOT......shrimp caught on here too, so some call them shrimp while others still call them prawns, and some don't care and call them by either name.

Nope. Not the same. Theyre cousins. To do with several things but most obviously differing sets of claws on the legs. Taste si ilar. Used similarly. NOT the same creature. Google it.
@namewithheldbygoogleforsec673
@@kerrydoutch5104 same family so close enough to be the same, unlike yabbies, and lobsters, etc. yabbies and crayfish are the same family, but are not like shrimp or prawns. Plus, I was joking! 😊

@@namewithheldbygoogleforsec673 I get what youre saying. Butstill not the same. Like saying kangaroos and wallabies are the same. Or that horses and donkeys are the same. They can do similar things and live similar lives and eat similar stuff. But theyre not the same.
@namewithheldbygoogleforsec673
@@kerrydoutch5104 I understand but they're more closer related than horses and donkeys (even though horses and donkeys are the same family.....Equine) and kangaroos and wallabies. Prawns and shrimp are more closer related, like Red Kangaroos and Grey Kangaroos are closer related. Wallabies, though in the same family, are not as close related to kangaroos as the two kangaroos i mentioned.......just like prawns and shrimp are closer related to each other than yabbies and lobster are related! Same same but different! 😊

Prawns /shrimps are the same animal, just called different names. Wild horses in Australia are brumbies (brumby - singular), in the US 🇺🇸 wild horses are Mustangs.
