I worked for a vet clinic that was bought out and prices skyrocketed within a year!! What used to cost $98 jumped to $140. It was ridiculous! Locally owned clinics will get very busy!

Our electricity is called "hydro" because of how we produce most electricity here (in Quebec at least), which is hydroelectricity. It's made from water trapped in giant dams flowing through a pipe then falling on the blades of a turbine. That movement produces electricity that is stored and distributed somehow (I'm no expert). The company in Quebec that has monopoly over production and distribution of electricity is called Hydro Quebec, hence "hydro" for short. That name is not as random as it seems! Hope it makes better sense now 😊

I live in a small town of about 4000 in southwest Ontario. In the past 10 years, many of the local vet clinics here and in surrounding towns have been bought up by a local corporation. Thankfully, it isn't a huge conglomerate that owns these clinics, but their prices are outrageously high. Last week my dog had heat stroke after a half-hour walk on the beach and my bill for her treatment and medications was $875. $70 for an emergency visit, $250 for 1hour of IV treatment, $200 for blood tests, more for oxygen treatment and then about 5 different meds, and of course tax on the total. It was pretty ironic because just that morning I had picked up 3 prescriptions for myself and it cost me $12. I was in hospital for 3 weeks in 2022 and all it cost me was $45 for the ambulance. I pay more for my dog's medical bills than I do for my own! If I want to find an independent vet, I'd have to travel 20km to their office.

I work at a vet clinic that was bought over and it's honestly been the greatest thing in my situation. Care and quality of medicine is kept within our team, if anything I've seen improvements as we have access to other clinics we can contact for advice. For once in my 20 year career we have health insurance, mental health services, and much more job satisfaction and support available. A single DVM owned clinic can be an extremely hostile and difficult place to work depending on who that person is, what they are going through and how they let that effect their management. No one ever had to keep them accountable before and the turn over in clinics for staff was so high.

First Nations had a way of preventing massive forest fires. They did try imparting their knowledge but of course governments know better 😂. There are thankfully a few regions who are starting to listen and learn. There was a family owned vet clinic with 17 vets who decided to retire and sold to a corporation. Long story made short, prices have skyrocketed and the small town personal touch flew out the window. There is now only 1 full time vet. The other locally owned clinics were flooded with new clients to the point where they can’t accept any new ones. Getting a vet is becoming as difficult as finding a physician

RE: Vets - if they control the market, they set the agenda. It becomes more about making a profit than proper care. If the Vet recommends something, it is necessary or upselling? Will people take their pets to the Vet when they are sick or wait until it is too late because they are short the cash? Also, they gain the power to lobby Governments.

You sound very responsible. You are correct, we had a Poodle (whom we loved ) that broke his leg right before christmas. Back in 1995 the vet bill was 1,000 dollars. We had a pretty lean Christmas but honestly they are a member of your family so you just scrape it together. He lived to be fourteen. We adopted a rescue dog next who ended up with leukaemia and after a few vet bills we had to Euthanize at one year old as he was suffering badly. Our only option would have been chemo to prolong his life a few months. Heartbreaking. Our next and last dog was good until she was six years old and she ended up with liver disease. In the end we lost three loved fur babies in the span of eight years. It isn’t just the expense it is the heartache when they pass. I have a friend who just got a puppy that broke both front legs just from jumping off the bed. The poor puppy has broken them twice more and is still a puppy. Their previous dog lived for years with no major problems. You just never know how it will go.
@IzReal-ot2ll
@IzReal-ot2ll Месяц назад
Back in the early eighties, my 6 month puppy got parvovirus even though she had been vaccinated. The vet requested $3000 just to begin treatment. I begged and borrowed from everyone in my family. I was 16 at the time and was working but certainly didn't have that kind of money. Fortunately she was saved. I paid everyone back and thanked them with everything in my being. When she was around 6 or 7 she was poisoned. The vet tried to save her but this time she didn't make it. The vet even called me in to sit with her cuz she wasn't responding to treatment the way he wanted. I must have sat with her for hours. She died that night. I sometimes wonder if she thought i was abandoning her so she gave up. My vet started calling me at 7am, but I wouldn't answer the phone. I knew somehow that she was gone and I didn't want to hear it. It just tore my heart out. In all my years having animals my vet was the only vet's office that sent me a bereavement card signed by the entire staff. It was the only vet's office that I ever took her to. I was really sad when he had to retire. I just thought of all the animals that were losing a fantastic vet. We knew who poisoned her, unfortunately we just couldn't prove it. In order to find out which poison was used would have cost another $3000 minimum so I declined to find out. It's so damn hard when you lose a loved pet no matter who you are. It truly hurts the soul, they are family just like the humans in the family. They just happen to be fur babies.

I grew up in Northeastern Ontario. Forest fires occured yearly but the fire fighters were very good at containing them & we rarely experienced drought conditions like we do now. Bush pilots fly over the region regularly to watch for forest fires. It wasn't unusual to smell smoke but we only received a warning to be ready to evacuate once. We each packed one suitcase. It was scary knowing we might come back to a completely burned out farm. The cows were let out of the barn & we kept the dog close because we knew if we didn't, we would need to leave him behind if we were told to leave.

There is no independent oversite and peer review when most clinics are owned by large corporations. This can cause stagnation in independent research into pet medicine and the study of their physiology. Think of it this way. If the company selling animal food becomes the owners of the vet clinics. This can make it easier to cover up potential recalls and leaves no checks and balances.

This accident happened about an hour after dark and he claimed that the fishing boat had no lights on it. I find that highly suspect. I would also like to know what the heck he was doing driving around at high speed in the dark, without lights on his own boat to see where he was going.
