In Québec we never heard of loonies and toonies I swear, we say "un dollar, deux dollars" or "une piastre, deux piastres". I think 'aboot' came from an American comedian's act. The guy had a joke about accents, and how Canadians say the word 'route' like it rhymes with 'root', while Americans say something more like 'rahwt'. in the middle of the panel with kit harrington and thandie newton is Xavier Dolan, a very famous filmmaker and actor from Québec, who seems to be pretending that he doesn't know much about Canada. Even though there are some cultural differences in Québec, it is the same currency as in the rest of the country, so he should have known right away what a loonie is (I do believe in french they say "un loonie" I live in Montréal and I have heard francophones refer to it as that). Dolan directed, co-wrote and co-produced a Canadian film (in English) called "The Death and Life of John F. Donovan" that starred harrington and newton, so they were in Canada to make this movie.

The Canadian "eh" was a popular saying back in the mid 70s and early 80s, like the American saying "gag me with a spoon". It's rare that we say the "eh" now. It ran its course just like the "gag me with a spoon" phrase did in the U.S.

I respect Jude Law's answer's the most for not picking such people to be on our Dollar Bill. We should have scientists, or inventors and such, he knew what he was talking about. Even in Music, we have artist's like The Guess Who, Joni Mitchell, and April Wine, etc. Also people like Elsie MacGill during WWII who were a tremendous help in developing the Hurricane Fighter Planes from 1940 - 1945 while being stricken with polio, and she even had her own comic book published by Marvel Comics during the war. Plenty to put on the bills besides some pop stars with a couple hits.

Im old enough to remember when we didnt have to use area codes, Toronto's first area code was 416......The Six is just a reference to that. In the Greater Toronto Area, the terms the 416 is also used to describe the area within Toronto proper, and Toronto residents are called 416ers. In recent years, Toronto has been increasingly referred to as "The 6".

I would say, Ryan Reynolds is slightly more famous than Ryan Gosling, but only because he’s in the Marvel universe. I wouldn’t put any of those people on Canadian currency. And besides, we gave Justin Bieber to the United States, don’t try giving him back. 😆 Considering Claire Foy played Queen Elizabeth II on the Crown, I would’ve thought she would’ve said the queen should be on the money. 🤷

There have already been many comments about “the 6”. It was mainly a Toronto recognizing Toronto thing until the Raptors won the NBA title a few years back and then this who watched the celebrations might have heard it. But to answer your question as to why all these celebrities are in Toronto to begin with 1. Toronto now called Hollywood North for a reason. There are always series and movies being shot there. Also in Vancouver and now more in the Calgary area. 2- and more likely the answer is that all these celebs were attending the Toronto International Film Festival. (TIFF). It’s now the festival that starts off the run to the Oscars every year as it runs in September just before the Oscar nomination/application dates, so they all show up to do press for their movies and shows.

Toronto is called “the 6” because the area code is 416. Also, Toronto is made up of 6 formerly independent boroughs that were all amalgamated into the city of Toronto 30 years ago. Most Torontonians still refer to those parts of town by their old names - Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, East York, York, and Toronto

A lot of the stereotype about Canadians apologizing is because we use "sorry" as a polite way of saying "that sucks." It's not so much an apology in most cases as a mild condolence.

Drake popularized refering to Toronto as "The 6" as NYC has 5 boroughs. Metropolitan Toronto, until it was amalgamated had "6". The City of Toronto (commonly called "Downtown"), North York, York, Etobicoke, Scarborough and East York. With the exception of East York, all became cities in their own right. East York remained classified as a "Borough." The Six is a reference to the six districts that made up what is now Toronto. Some people, might think it refers to the original telephone area code of 416.. or even the additional area code of 647.
