Don't need to imagine it - I've seen one. Millennium Stadium, and the then Wales coach insisted that the Haka be done before the anthems, which the AB's refused to do. They did the Haka in the sheds - as the crowd showed their disgust at the WRU. Quite rightly, they came out and reamed us. What kind of idiot gives additional motivation to that team...

Thank you for taking a real interest in the history behind the haka, rather than just watching it with no context. The haka means a lot to us spiritually as a nation, Maori and Pakeha (non Maori) alike. Its used at weddings, at funerals, celebrations of all sorts. It's a massive form of showing respect, with a little bit of 'we're challenging you so meet us". I am from South Africa, and meeting Kiwis in the UK and the sense of pride they have is pretty inspiring. Not sure if you know, but Temuera Morrison who plays Bobba Fett (He also played Jango Fett in the Star wars prequesl) in The Mandalorian is Māori and incorporated some Haka into the character in the Mandolorian. One of the things about New Zealand is that they for the most part have integrated with the Maori people, it's probably not all rosy in the garden but it's sadly not like the US where an element of the population is still fighting against that. This video shows a way to come together helping the process in an extremely power positive way good on them there should be more of it, got to love the Kiwis.
@NE55IE
@NE55IE 3 года назад
Hmm it depends on what you mean by "integrated with the Maori people"??!! Because it took Maori almost 200years of inland warfare with the great powers of Britain due to their criminal injustices (such as killing and raping innocent Maori civilians) and genocide exterminating many of our people, our culture AND traditions, such as the Tohunga Suppression Act and suppressing our language. NZ Wars covers that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lgZT0_8Hpw0.html) If there is any integration, it is because Maori are still fighting for it. It's only since the 1960s that finally, something is being done about it!

The game of rugby traditionally has big guy forward players and smaller, fast running, backs. It's said that the early 20th century the NZ team's name was coined not because the team were all black, but because they played like they were all "backs" and a sport correspondent misheard. I think you are mistaking New Zealand for South Africa when you talk about the NZ All Blacks being "All White" in the 20th Century. We've always had Maori players. The first international tour outside of Australia was in 1888 when NZ travelled to UK with a team consisting of almost as many Maori players as Pakeha (white people). The next tour was in 1905 and the team was nicknamed The Originals for beating all the UK teams except Wales. It was the next NZ team called ""The Invincibles' that toured UK, France and Canada in 1924, that first performed the Haka for test matches. The Maori players in the team composed it, it wasn't Ka Mate, and taught the pakeha players how to perform it.

The all blacks are the most dominant team in the history of sports there is a reason for this and a big part of that is the haka. To perform the haka it brings pride to wear the jersey and represent the coutry, gets the person who performs it ready to play and it intimates the other team. We have many names for the new zealand sports teams. The all blacks - rugby union , the all whites - football (soccer) , the silver ferns - netball , the black caps - criket and many more. Back in the day i loved when the all blacks played the welsh in wales exspecialy at cardiff arms park because you got the haka which i love but then you got the welsh national anthen song by everyone in the stands . There have always been Maoris in the NZ All Blacks, going back to the first official NZ representative side to tour Australia in 1893. In fact the captain of that 1893 team was a Maori, Thomas Ellison. For the three NZ tours of South Africa in 1928/49/60, the SA Union would not accept Maori players. But in 1967 NZ rejected the SA demands and cancelled the tour. From 1970 Maori have been selected for all SA tours.

If no-one has mentioned, women also have haka. The Black Ferns (world champions in Rugby 15s and 7s) have an awesome one. There is another theory as to the origin of the Ka Mate haka. But most people believe the Te Rauparaha theory. The other one is that it is based on the legend of Maui (a Maori jokster/hero god) who created the 24 hour day by capturing the sun and forcing it to slow down in the sky therefore allowing live to exist on the Earth. And the lyrics to Ka Mate do indeed fit with this famous legend. One of the most famous All Blacks was George Nepia from the 1924 squad. He was of Maori heritage so the All Blacks have almost always had the full cultural heritage of NZ involved. In fact NZRU refused to play in South Africa for 10 years (basically all of the 1960s) until ALL the players in the team were allowed into that country. The first ever All Blacks in 1884 even was multicultural. John Taiaroa played at half-back (Ngai Tahu).

The problem with the haka nowadays is that it is vastly overused. The haka has started to lose its aura, its significance, its poignancy through inappropriate overuse. Once upon a time it seemed that the Haka was performed only by the All Blacks before a rugby Test match. It was a special part of the event. It was exciting to watch and you could tell it was a great honour to be performing it. It was a battle cry that added real intensity and sense of occasion. However, in recent years the Kiwis have gone Haka crazy and are in danger of disrespecting it. Every time you turn around there seems to be another bunch of Kiwis performing the Haka. Things like sending someone off at a funeral, other New Zealand sporting teams performing it. Now there are even wedding Hakas. Sometimes I feel like we are getting to the point where we’ll be seeing spontaneous Hakas when someone posts a letter or receives their meal at a restaurant.

I always wonder how my grandfather reacted inside when he first faced a haka back in the 30's it wasn't something everyone was so aware of back then or had seen so he would only have the stories of his team mates who had faced it before.

The All Blacks have always been an ethnically mixed team, going right back to the start of the 1900s. Unfortunately, when the All Blacks played South Africa in South Africa and South Africa had the apartheid system in the 1970s and 80s the NZ Rugby Union agreed to bring an only white team to South Africa. This was hugely controversial in New Zealand and there were massive protests against the Rugby Union for allowing this to happen. These protests were instrumental in getting the apartheid system in South Africa removed.

We haven't had alot of racism (not that there wasn't any because there was) here in New Zealand especially to the extent of the U.S for example. We had our own Moari Battalion during WW2 & actually the American Soldiers that came to New Zealand during the war couldn't believe how the Moari integrated on a daily basis with white Kiwi's. They were allowed in bars, shops and restaurants equally.

The Haka was a war chant meant to intimidate the enemy long before the one that is well known now and done by the All Blacks. There are different kinds of Hakas.

Imagine being a British Colonial Soldier between 1860-1869 in what is now known as New Zealand, & witnessing some thing akin to this, (1:34) & feeling at lest some what terrified, watching the enemy, as far as that British Colonial Soldier is concerned, chanting some thing unearthly in a mutually unintelligible language not known to Europeans, & as far as he's concerned, terrifying displays of Barbarism, Worrier & Tribal like Culture, And thinking, This is a far cry from the safety of the colony in New South Wales, & as far as he's concerned, Civilization. Dam, Those New Zealand Tribe's men would know all to well how to instil fear, deep, in to their enemy. It's a testament to any battle hardened soldier who doesn't at the site of all that, drop weapon, tern & run. Being well Drilled & Disciplined, would be one of the only things stopping that from happing. I think we all can see now why you Kiwi's are some of the most feared fighter's in The Commonwealth. Absolut Mad Lads ! God Bless The Kiwi's. & God Bless The The Commonwealth & The Anglosphere.

Maori culture is encouraged in NZ (who else would?) Each school/team/group has its own Haka. I was at school B4 the Maori Renaissance (+1980s), B4 Maori was taught in schools or uni. On my 2nd day at a mixed state highschool, (1970s) we learnt my school's Haka (performed often), months b4 the school song. The original AB Haka "Ka Mate, Ka Mate... Ka Ora, Ka Ora" "I Die, I Die? I Live, I Live?" The new Haka is "Ka Ponga" -Warriors in Black

Other Pacific nations have their own challenges, performed often, including but not only in rugby/sport. The better known ones, the Fijian Cibi, the Samoan Siva Tau, the Tongan Sipi Tau.

Can’t get enough of the Haka,seen some awesome performances. Have seen clips of NZ teams of the 50s, the Haka was weak and devoid of any pride.Since the inclusion of a more diverse team,it’s something else. Samoan rugby have a similar thing Siva tau.

Kia Ora mate , another aspect is I think most New Zealanders have a connection to the land and their ancestors , especially the Maori. Having that connection to the land is also a connection to your ancestors that walked that land. There are many spirits in this country that guide and protect us as a people. It may sound weird but people from any country that spend time in the nature of they home will understand. I'm not talking about literal ghosts , just a feeling you get when you spend some time in nature ( Bush, Coast, mountains,desserts) etc..

Te Rauparaha composed this Ngere after his life was saved by his enemy Te Wharerangi. He sat under the genitals of Te Wharerangi's wife Te Rangikoaea. This made the magic of the Tohunga useless. it is not about war, it is about laying down you life for your enemy. Te Wharerangi is murdered for saving Te Rauparaha, by those they sought to kill Te Rauparaha. This story is carved on the poutokomanawa of my marae (Meeting House) on Okahukura.

I watched it long before this or otherwise would have reacted. I have rarely seen something as moving. However, just the sheer amounts of comments that have suggested I either look at the funeral haka or his highlights lets me know without a doubt that the man was as loved as much as he was admired. It explains why I felt the emotion and power even through a screen when I watched the haka done in his honor.
