Formula 1 is not the same without the voice of Murray Walker calling the shots. RIP to the legendary commentator Murray Walker, he passed away 97 years young.
You got the nail on the head with Murray, even in the dullest of races you'd end up on the edge of your seat with Murray's commentary! You ought to see the pizza hut adverts and also when Murray did snooker commentary for the fun of it 😂
Great video Ian thanks! The Audi is from the 2.0L touring car era here in Australia. We tried to fall in line with European racing which didn't really work here in my opinion. The variety was the best thing about it, but most Aussies were missing the V8s.
@@timjohnun4297 Yes, you're right. Don't get me wrong, I love the V8s. I hated the idea of a "two horse race" at the time though. I still do. I didn't think it would last, but here we are.
Murray was a absolute legend, loved calling races throughout Australia, and extremely popular in the Pits with both drivers and crew and racing public. 👍👍🇭🇲
It was awesome to see Murray describing the lap from inside the car. We get people doing celeb laps of the mountain... but listening to Murray was incredible.
R.I.P Murray Walker, a voice from my childhood and one of the reasons I love motorsport so much. Truly a legend in his field. Can’t say enough about the man.
RIP Murray. My mum once queued for two hours to get me and my dad a signed copy of his autobiography, which she then surprised us with. A lovely gesture! Side note: early in life he was a copywriter, and he came up with the very familiar 'A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play'. Probably amongst many others!
Your talking about braking being so efficient these days reminded me of reading some years ago of a British car accelerating to 100mph and braking back down to zero all in around 10 seconds. You have to hand it to the late and great Murray Walker though. Here he is, at 73 and as cool as a cucumber, talking us through a terrifically fast tour around Bathurst in such a professional manner, almost as if it was a taxi ride to the shops! What a man he was! RIP.
This video was filmed during the era when Australia was having a bit of a series war. On one side were the local 5.0-litre V8 Falcons and Commodores, and on the other was the 2.0-litre Super Touring series, mostly run with hand-me-down cars from the British series. When Murray refers to Brad Jones as the reigning Australian Touring Car Champion, he's referring to the 2.0-litre series; since the V8s ultimately won the war, this isn't considered "canon" anymore. It was a good time to be a race fan though. Imagine if instead of locking CART out of Indianapolis, Tony George had just run two Indy 500s for a couples of years - one for CART, and one for his own IRL. That's basically what happened here in the late 90's, with two Bathurst 1000s each in 1997 and '98 - the "official" one for Super Touring cars, and the "outlaw" V8 Supercar race. The fans voted with their feet and Bathurst became a V8 Supercar race, with Super Touring just kind of withering on the vine around the turn of the millennium. Today, Brad Jones Racing is a Supercar team, although the man's greatest achievement is actually on the Thunderdome - he won the AUSCAR championship five years in a row.
Yes excellent summary, I like the idea of two bat1000s or 2 Indy500s… different series, different battles, different styles, but ultimately more buzz around a track and racing and more entertainment for fans!
Lived in NSW years ago and went out to Bathurst. Had a Series 2 RX7 back then and took it around the track a few times. Even though I had to try and stick to the speed limit it was still awesome to drive around. As most people say you don’t get an appreciation for the gradient of the climbs on TV.
Murry Walker was navigator one year for the Toyota factory team at Targa Tasmania, or was it Targa new Zealand. He would call the corners in his commentary theme. "And it's go go go" as the Camry left the line. Very entertaining. Edit. He was navigator 2 years with Collin Bond 2003 and Then Chris Amon. Both times in the Targa New Zealand
The coolest commentator ever. What composure commentating all through where others experienced on racing circuits nearly come apart, close to wetting themselves, Murray is so deep in commentsting details going on, that there is no time left for reaction to the extremes he his being exposed to.
i drove 10 laps in a formula ford last year (birthday present from daughter, best present ever!!!) great speed 220kph but the brakes were amazing. loved murray walkers commentary, loved his enthusiasim .
Hey mate..watched a few of your posts/vids etc..enjoy your point of view..commentary etc and how your watching heaps of Aussie things and enjoying what we have to offer..racing...Afl.. Rugby...etc...keep it up mate..👍👍
My first exposure to Formula 1 was with Murray Walker and his passion for Motorsports knows no bounds. Never mind getting tossed around the car, but his ability to describe the course...it feels like you're there with him.
Yeah well Ian.. It is awesome to hear Murray’s voice again.. I love how you are able to plug these awesome videos out for us to view again.. Love your work mate keep it up cheers from Australia
Saying he is working hard is an understatement Peter Brock once said that he can lose 4 to 5 kilos in weight on a race day like Bathurst - think somewhere between 8 to 12 lb in water weight !! That is really working.
Awesome points of view ya had mate. Old vid but your an enthusiastic young bloke which made it feel like it was yesterday. 😉 ridgy didge job man.🤘🇦🇺🍻🍻🍻
It's worth remembering the Mt Panorama track was remodeled in 1987 to insert The Chase into Conrod Straight, which was deadly, originally being a mile long downhill into the 90 degree Murrays Corner at the bottom. Prior to this many cars would become airborne over the second hump; on one occasion an Elfin/Repco 400 driven by Bevan Gibson flipped into the air and overturned onto its back with fatal results. Sadly there have been at least five other driver fatalities on Conrod over the years.
This is from the 1997 Super Tourer two litre only race. One of two years when there were two Bathurst 1000 races. Two litre on channel seven in October and a V8 Holden vs Ford enduro but in November on channel ten. A split in opinion of the two motorsport organising bodies. The two litre race had much more international connections of cars and drivers and this got Murray Walker here to commentate. As well as F1 he was a legend in the UK commenting on these type of cars. Brad Jones racing group developed the Audi locally to a very high level but a BMW won the race IIRC. This year there will be a TCR endurance race in November. But getting less publicity. Two litre or 1.6 turbo or some parity system I think. Will the future Camaro vs Mustang enduro here continue to create interest in future? Mustang and especially the Camaro very expensive here so less connection with Australians.
Nice video of a great commentator and motoring wit. It's very pleasant to watch and listen to your reaction to these events and experiences in Australia. Your happy demeanor, decent car knowledge and a touch of humility do you and your countrymen credit.
Absolutely right about high performance brakes. An F1 car can go from 200kph (124mph) to a full stop in around 65 meters (213 ft). I don't know how the drivers' eyeballs stay in their heads.
Murray was the ultimate enthusiast, four wheels or two, or even three. Even had a ride in the 2 seat F1 car in his 70s. Agree about the braking, I used to officiate at a hillclimb where a V8 supercar regulatly competed, seeing that thing hurtle towards my corner you didn't think it could possibly stop in time, but it stopped like it hit a brick wall
For a couple of years there was two Bathurst 1000 races per year, One with 2 litre touring cars which this Audi raced. And the other with the 5 litre V8 supercars
It's been told that Mount Panorama is on a similar level to the Nuremberg track in Germany. Especially from the blokes that come from overseas to race the Bathurst 12 hour (which at this point in time shits all over the Supertaxis 1000 which isn't that hard now seeing there's no Australian built Holdens and Fords now...it's now just a yawnfest! Bring back the Group C era!)
As an edit about my comment re the Group C era. it'd be hard to bring it back as the afore mentioned no local manufacturing of Holdens or Fords but it was the best era IMHO as they were hotted up cars based on production cars from the show room floor.
@@dylanzrim3635 I'm pretty sure he meant Group C, separate from FIA Group C overseas. Australian Group C ran from 1965-1984 and was the basis of our Production Touring Cars, and was not in any way related to FIA Group C endurance events like Le Mans
I had the brief privilege of speaking with Murray at the hotel I used to work in when he commentated one of the last Adelaide Grand Prix. A friendly bloke who will be missed.
From the SuperTouring days, two litre cars, Audi BMW Mercedes Renault Peugeot Nissan Alfa Volvo and others all ran in series all over the world. Similar to the TCR series that has spread globally now.
@3:26 Ian, when saying that they drive the absolute hell out every nut and bolt and a workout, where the drivers are using a 6speed sequential gearbox in this 1987 Audi, then go jump into a 1987 Group A Commodore that uses a 5speed manual gearbox, now tell me who’s going to need a ice bath after racing Bathurst. That’s the thing back then Group A V8s are road version cars modified for racing, and that’s when that saying, win on Sunday sell on Monday comes in, not like how this generation of V8SC are today. With that said the next generation of race cars is heading back to the days of Group A, but sadly there will be no Commodores or Falcons but the blue oval will still be there represented by the Mustang but the lion sadly has been layed to rest but a older sibling the Camaro will take his place from GM. Cannot wait exciting times ahead, at this stage it’s looking like October 2022 before we see things change.
You should definitely react to Irish road racing. It’s the same as the Isle of Man TT in a lot of ways. It’s a road race but instead of a time trial it’s an actual race. A lot of the TT riders also participate in these races. Definitely the called “Road Warriors” you’ll get a good idea of how insane it is.👍🏻
@@steveb2915 I'm actually in the Strathbogie Ranges south of Benalla but yeah...still down the road! :D Winton Raceway isn't too far away and that's where a few of the teams do their testing.
I remember the Australian touring car championship with the 2 litres and the early V8 Super cars at Bathurst a week apart, the V8s were much quicker so the 2 litres disappeared.
Youll have to go to Bathurst once Covid is over. Its only 125 Miles west of Sydney. One thing you wont expect is the cold weather. Even though its spring in October. Mt Panorama is over 1/2 a mile high. Regular windstorms and light snowfalls can happen. www.supercars.com/news/championship/bathurst-snowfall-mount-panorama-turns-winter-wonderland/ Was talking to a couple of American train-buffs near Bathurst. (Locksley is near those two mountains you see when you look east from Skyline (Mt Panorama)) They were hiding in their cars while we stood in 35'F and snow flurries (@ 2:30 pm), waiting for a train. They thought we were crazy. We thought they were crazy for going to the Central West (region) in shorts.
You say you couldn't imagine doing 1000 kilometers in the race with the amount of work the driver does. In fairness, in the race they have two drivers sharing the driving, so they don't actually do anything like 1000 kilometers!! But still, bloody hard work, and incredibly hot in their!! They definitely need to be very fit to take part in this race!!
G, day mate, your commentary voice is classic and l think you have a future of communication in all levels of racing, ifyou haven't been asked to do it professionally l think its coming, would love to hear you call a full Bathurst race in your native accent it would be a blast for Australia viewer's, cheers and keep safe.
That is so nice of you.. thank you! That would be a dream for sure, I always wanted to do commentary and or radio as a youngster, that certainly would be thrilling! Thanks again for your kind words, and for watching and being here. Be well, and keep safe. See you in the next one 😉🎉🇺🇸🇦🇺
( Google well behaved tyre ) The was a an incident at bathurst in the 1990's I think where a tyre or a wheel came of a falcon on the mountain during a race and slowly rolled for a ling distance and eventually rolled off the track and bounced up onto a tyre barrier and perfectly landed on top of an old tyre sack as if it new where to go, a one off event, it's worth a look.
This footage is from when Australia had rival touring car championships, the V8 Supercars and the Australian Super Touringcar Championship . This was also when there were two Bathurst 1000 races a year . If you really like Bathurst mate the track is simulated on multiple games .
If you're wondering why he's in an Audi, it's because at that time, there was a bit of a civil war between the 2.0 litre touring cars, and the V8s. The V8s said that because they were more popular, that they should get more money. The racing body put the 2.0 litres on the traditional Bathurst weekend, as a bit of a "screw you", thinking the popularity of 2.0 litres in Europe would make it more of a global race. The people voted with their feet, and the 2.0 litre series eventually died in Australia.
Brad Jones was a great driver and developed a great car and team. These 2L cars were probably more representative of what people drove and aligned with European TC series but did not survive. The irony is that they have probably had the last laugh with no home made V8's any longer, and the cars no longer represent road cars. Brad moved into V8 Supercars as a driver and owner, he's a good bloke and runs a multi car Supercars operation from a regional city of 60k people, I could drive there in 5 minutes. I don't want to insult them by saying on the smell of an oily rag as they are super professional but it must be a constant battle especially when their cars get smashed and they do a great job. That Audi was a great car.
No doubt at all, without absolute athletic stamina or the extreme physical endurance of any long distance marathoner the drivers are going through a hell of physical and concentration demands few people can endure. Even given two drivers roughly share equal parts of the 1000km, or less for slower cars. As far as cars go, while engunes and transmission are put to extreme test, the race is won more on brakes and tyres, than pure power. All kinds of details may be less than 110% right but the brakes and tyres must never let a team down or they do not finish that race.
I still want to do it, but for one it will almost guaranteed Get copyright claimed, as most of the newer race stuff does, and I like new racing too but I really prefer and respect the old series more, like early 90’s and earlier
This is from the Bathurst 12 hour at easter and not the 1000, Audi Quattro has the wrong specs for the 1000 From what I have been told Murray Walker would at least 1 lap at race speed to get the feel of the track so when he did his role as commentator he had the knowage of the track and the feel of it.
I would love to see NASCAR come to Australia and do a race at Bathurst and do 1000k that would be something to see something i would love to see, how well do you think they would do at Bathurst I think they would struggle. 🤓👍🇦🇺😁
I would love to see that wow, I wish they would. I think they would struggle on the mountain section, but really fly on Conrad and the front section of the track. It would be a spectacle to watch! I’d love to see what lap times they could swing
@@IWrocker cheers MATE, let's talk about it and get it out there, get the USA talking and Darrel Waltrip and maybe one day the championship might just come here for a spectacular weekend. 😁👍🇦🇺
These professional drivers have to so fiscally fit the extreme heat that comes of the track & in car temperature are to the extreme what these professional athletes which they are plus race drivers it is unbelievable how they cope with it but back in to old days i mean early 1970 1980 ts when in car cooling system that was tuff boys became men
@@IWrocker there full race footage of Bathurst 1000 from previous years or 2 on you tube, might have to ask permission to re veiw it if its from v8 supercar channel .
Relatively old session, the likes of the Audi have no chance against current grneration Super cars. Just the top speeds on Conrod Straight now easily exceed 300 kph. Speeds throughout are higher, total durationis now around 5 1/2 hrs, while then it was well past 6 hrs, approaching 7 hrs.
Modern Bathurst 1000km race uses 2x drivers older 500mile races had only 1drive in standard road cars stock tyres brakes paint a number on the door go racing..
I thought you might like to check this out. This is the best Australian race car ever built and it was mainly built for the Bathurst race track, you really need to check out the FORD GTHO PHASE III this was the fastest 4 door car in the world in it's day and is as rare as chickens teeth!!
