We never had firelighters, instead I used to make paper twists as a child from newspapers and with a little kindling wood my mum and nana's fires were set and roaring in no time. Loved it when Nurse Gladys lobbed those apples at Arkwright, not sure if she hit him in the Cox's Pippins with one!! 🍎🍏

The "burnt" bread is just a type of Farmhouse Loaf. Often had a very dark top. Sort of thing you get from a proper bakers rather than that factory produced muck. You'll find no sugar in that bread either!

I question how much is in factory bread since I use 4-6 medium slices for sandwiches for lunch

We used fire lighters when we had coal fires. Oily white bricks that had been soaked in some inflammable liquid, you could smell them in the old ironmongers shops. Reginald Bosanquet was a well known news reader at ITN the commercial news channel. I did find a worm in an apple about two years ago. First time. A tiny white wiggly thing. It had got in at the top where the stalk was. The apple looked OK from the outside. It was a bit off putting. Great episode, I remember the Legs bit.

Not a worm, it's a maggot and they're very common.

Ronnie Barker & David Jason loved working together , Open all Hours was their 3rd project together . Both were in Porridge and back in 1969 both were in a show called Hark at Barker . A couple of years later the show was renamed as His Lordship Entertains . But the one role i love David Jason in is a police drama called Frost were he plays Detective Inspector Jack Frost which ran for 18 years 1992-2010 . Even though his character was supposed to be serious there was always some great comedy sarcasm from him . Most people will probably say his best role was Del Boy in Only Fools & Horses but for me it was D.I.Frost in Frost .

In a similar way to David being older than the character he plays, as a kid I always thought it odd that Henry Winkler's Fonz in Happy Days hung around with Ron Howard et al. I thought that he was in his 30's rather than a couple of years older than the high school kids.

Yes, Firelighters. We all had coal fires in the 70s, none of this fancy electric stuff. I had to make kindling and fetch coal before getting ready for school in the morning.

Born in 1940, and first acting role in a TV soap opera in 1964. Would have been 36 when the first episode of this series was aired. I think the part called for an 'over-aged' errand boy!

The cooking apples on my old tree used to be full of maggots. They still made brilliant pies. The apple is not native to the US, so maybe you don't have the same flying insects that lay eggs in your apples.

Firelighters are just a really really long match to light the wood/coal fireplace. Some houses could have two of them if they had a separate room in the back off the kitchen.

The worm is a maggot, not an actual worm. They are more common where pesticides are not used.

Hi Tony Glad you enjoyed the Ronnie Barker David Jason links I sent. Between them those two are definitely in the top handful of the best English comedy actors. Plus they can both turn their talents to straight acting. Truly a couple of comedy genius's. Don't know if you know this but Ronnie used to write scripts under the pseudonym of Gerald Wiley to hide his famous side. Anyway keep up the good w-w-w-w-w-w-w-work😂

@@TheRealSquirrelA lot of people still had coal fires. We had a cola fire in the 60s. By this time we had gas fires. Coal fires were great. If it was pouring down, we would sit in front of the coal fire and dry out, get warm and watch the dancing of the magical flames. Not so great for the parents as the setting up and cleaning would take some time.

@@TheRealSquirrel The Episode with the Sandwich sub plot is probably the best. (Filmed by Yorkshire TV Studios and a lot of outdoor bits are near where I used to ln the external bits of Leeds - though the setting is supposed to be somewhere in the Midlands. the last episode is emotionally touching and takes a surprise turn at the end). Overall a long watch, best get the box set !) And of course David Jason also played Blanko in Porridge with Barker. Everybody who says Jason started acting at age of 30 I think is wrong, he was much younger on a show aim more at kids Do Not Adjust Your Set - pre Monty Python 1967-1969 black and white with music by the Bonzo Do Dah Band. its all on YT
