This episode was in 1976 which makes David Jason 36 in this episode he was born 1940…& ronnie barker was 47 in this episode he was born 1929 & thanks again Tony this programme is fantastic keep it till the end

If you've ever wondered why programmes set in the north of England, such as this one and the ones about Fred Dibnah, always use trumpet music, it's because many factories and mills had brass bands, hence the association with the north.

Cornet , generally (the bore is different so the tone is more mellow compared to orchestral trumpets)

There still are some brass bands going in the NW and up until 2020 a different one each week would come to our local park in the summer and play on the bandstand.

One of the metal signs on the side wall of the shop states Reckitts Blue. The company that made this is known by another name now. At the time of filming, they were known as Reckitts and Coleman. They are located in my City which is in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The place the store is located is Doncaster which is in South Yorkshire.

You should try 'Porridge' with Ronnie Barker. It's another great series. It might have copyright problems, though, as it is still regularly shown on the BBC even after forty years.

David Jason was born in 1940 so yes...he was well into his 30s in this programme. His elder brother is Arthur White who was also an actor. In the documentary "13 hours that saved Britain", Arthur talks about how he and his brother survived the Blitz.

In Ronnie Barker's other sitcom, Porridge, he plays Blanco, an eldey convict with white hair. The two series were pretty close together chronologically.

David Jason was 36 when this was made but Granville is meant to be about 25 which is ehy he's always going on about being too young for certain responsibilities

Granville [sir david jason OBE] was 40 playing a 19yo he is now in his mid 80s one of the most loved British actors and is most famous for playing dell boy in the long running series only fools and horses and went on to star in many other popular tv shows and is still going

I wish I could go back to those days, remember them well still use my corner shop run by Cypriots and over the years, love the friendly camaraderie and chit chats apparently owners say the younger generation just ignore them. Sad as focal point to us oldies. Imo.

He was in real life, aged about 36 during filming of the first series. In the pilot, filmed a year or so earlier Granville was supposed to be 25 which was somewhat believable , but in the series, this was changed to him being 19, which was not so believable. He could pass for ten years younger at a push but not 18 years younger. Ronnie Barker was only 11 years older than David Jason in real life. David Jason more realistically, played his character of Delboy, in Only Fools & Horses, as being around ten years younger than his actual age, abd the character of Delboy aged with the show. Granville in open all hours however didn't age and was still supposed to be 19 in 1885 when the show finished. So, therefore, when it returned as "Still Open all Hours" around ten years ago, if he was 19 in 1985, Granville should only have been in his mid 50''s when the show started, but David Jason was nearer 80 by then, than he was 50. Still, it's a good show.

@@stephendisraeli1143 they were still in circulation as coins with a value of five new pence. The Two Bob Bit (Florin) was an effort at decimalisation with 10 to the pound ( as in 1/10 of pound of silver - so 1.6oz originally )

Granville (oka David Jason) is also Del Boy in Only fools and Horses, so he's about 70 years old. Ltnda Baron died a year or so ago - old age I think. This series goes back to the 1980's. Both Ronnies are now also long gone.

hi just found your channel and like it.have you checked out another british comedy series called DADS ARMY yet..its about a home guard unit in ww2...most of the actors are in their 60s or70s and they made a movie about dads army...its from the 70s 80s also
