Open All Hours 1973, 1976, 1981 1982 and 1985. Series 2 was written in 1980. It filmed January 1981 External scenes and recording date was February 1981 in the studios at the BBC television centre Shepherd's Bush London by TV sitcom writer veteran Roy Clarke, (who also wrote; Last of the Summer Wine 1973 - 2010, Keeping Up Appearances 1990 - 1995). It was first broadcast on March 1 1981 ten years and 26 days before I was born! 🤣🤣 Ronnie Barker was paid £2000 x 7 per episode for series 2 In 1981 (Source Graham McCann Still Open All Hours book 2014) thats £7.449.93p x 7 in April 2024. As the show goes on some 'customers' become regulars, where as others sort of pass by as a one off. Introducing Mavis...
@leehallam9365
@leehallam9365 Месяц назад
Ah Dithering Mavis! Was this her first appearance, she became a regular customer. As for the formula, don't worry they don't change it, it isn't one of those comedies that develops or has a story arc. They wouldn't want to spoil it. This series was made five years after the first, not that you can tell, no time has passed and adolescent Granville was played by a David Jason that would not see his fortieth birthday again.

Did anyone tell you Squirrel that you'd make a great preacher, all I kept hearing was the scene in There Will Be Blood when Daniel Plainview is in church being smacked across the face while shouting "I HAVE ABANDONED MY CHILD", I would treat all my nephews in the exact same way as he treats Granville, maybe I am getting old

At some point I would suggest doing the pilot episode too. It's honestly one of the funniest episodes IMO. A couple of things are different from the eventual show but it's great fun.
@leehallam9365
@leehallam9365 Месяц назад
The only trouble with the pilot is that they reused a lot of material in the early episodes, and of course Nurse Gladys is different. There were some funny customers in it though.

Have you noticed that the till is much more dangerous in series 2? In the first series they were pretty obviously pushing the till shut, but by series two there is some kind of self-closing mechanism 😂
@adrianbaker5916

It was someone out of shot yanking the till shut. This episode is the first appearance of a tin on top though.

@simonrobbins8357 Месяц назад
@@adrianbaker5916 Yes, I guess it was as simple as that, but not in series one though, they were most definitely pushing it themselves.

Yep. I think in between series new people had moved into the original house and didn’t want the film crew using it. So they used next door, instead.

Have you noticed the series is written by Roy Clarke? In America it would be a team of a dozen writers, and would not have the idiosyncrasies that generate so much humour. To me, when you get to the end of Open all hours, you ought to do Porridge. Barker's other great comedy creation.

£222.22 for a washing machine when this show was written? I know they picked the amount for comedic effect, and I never bought a washing machine back then, but I assume it must’ve been a fairly realistic price. I was expecting something like £55.55. The cheapest washing machine in Currys today is £219. And people moan about price rises.😂

@@ryanohara476 Inflation calculators are notoriously difficult due to the fact that different things increase at different rates. A large loaf of bread cost about 37p in which works out about £1.27 today, not far off however the average house cost around £23500 or about £81000 in today’s money which is far from the truth. I started work in 1982 on £3090 a year which would be £10645 now but anyone starting with the same company now would probably be on at least £22000 a year if not a bit more. Anyway getting back to the show £222 for a washing machine would be £764 now. That’s not impossible, some cost a lot more than that but I would expect Arkwright to be looking for the cheapest and you can still get a cheap one for just over 200 quid. Not surprised that price brought on his stutter back then 😀
