She was dressed as admiral Nelson who won the battle of Trafalgar against Napoleons navy in 1805. He had one arm and one eye at the time from previous battles. He was unfortunately killed at that time on the deck of his flag ship HMS Victory which you can visit at the navy base in Portsmouth, England. "Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves". We had the most powerful navy at that time, and while we were fighting the French (our favourite pastime in those days) we were also blockading the African coastline to stop the slave ships as we'd been fighting against slavery which we outlawed across the world. This is why this song is so meaningful to us. Much love to you and your family island girl. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

I was JUST about to say, she looks like she's supposed to represent Horatio Nelson! I'm a HUGE history buff, and things like the Napoleonic Wars and the Seven Years' War don't get talked about nearly enough in school, if you ask me. Those two events shaped much of European history and redrew border lines of whole countries.

@@coot1925 Thanks, dude! I know most people think that Americans are stupid about things like history, Texans in particular, but I LOVE history, especially ancient history. But, I think most history buffs like ancient history :). However, there's one civilization that most people don't hear about over here in America: The Sumerians. Mostly, it's just things like how they invented the first of practically everything that you need to start a society, that they just about came straight out of the Stone Age with this technology, and then they exit stage left. All right, class, now on to Egypt, Greece, and Rome--the good ones people like more. Strike that, reverse it, as Willy Wonka would say. Go back and talk about the Sumerians more!

Yes! Love it. The song is about the Charter that decreed that no one on British soil could be a slave and that anyone who came into Britain would automatically be free from slavery.

We the British are normally very quiet and resevered but for the second half of the last night of the proms we let our hair down. The 6 weeks of the proms is normally just classical music with the odd jazz and folk concert added in. We the british can show our patriotism on this night. There is also the Sea shanties which i love.

Lovely reaction and so grateful for someone not British to actually applaud us for being proud about it 👍 gotta be honest I only know the chorus (no idea about the rest, something about aggemagne and a charter?!) But the content of the chorus is enough "rule brittania, brittania rule the waves, Britons never ever ever shall be slaves" why not be proud be proud of that hey ☺

We Brits don't sing the National anthem often so when we do it has great meaning. The last night of the proms has this tradition and many people attend every year for the fun. If you visit London during this season it's impossible to get a ticket but their are often outdoor screens set up. Best to book the proms then ...the holiday.

The song Rule Britannia was written because before Britain had the largest navy on the world. The Barbary Pirates of North Africa and the Arab world used to sail ships to the British isles and Europe and raid coastal towns to take people by force into slavery..this is because the Arabs wanted white women and children for sex slaves. So the king started to build a defensive Navy to stop this from happening. Then through trade and empire the navy became the largest in the world and the Barbary Pirates then we're stopped from attacking great Britain..their terror reign was brought to. An end hence the lyrics " rule Britannia Britannia rules the waves, Britons never never never shal be slaves..it was effectively a song of celebration about no longer being raided by the Barbary Pirates

The song actually comes from an operetta in the mid 18th Century, and the song became popular after a naval victory in the 7 years War against the French and Spanish navies, starting the ascendancy of Britain’s Naval dominance. The chorus is actually “Rule Britannia, Britannia RULE the Waves” not “RULES”.

When Britain first, at heaven's command Arose from out the azure main Arose arose from out the azure main This was the charter, the charter of the land And guardian angels sang this strain Rule Britannia, Britannia, rule the waves Britons never, never, shall be slaves Rule Britannia, Britannia, rule the waves Britons never, never, shall be slaves The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, Must, in their in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. Rule Britannia, Britannia, rule the waves Britons never, never, shall be slaves Rule Britannia, Britannia, rule the waves Britons never, never, shall be slaves Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, More dreadful dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast, the blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. Although this is a patriotic song, having a soprano dressed as Nelson adds a bit of a light comic touch. The "proms" are, after all, entertainment. These songs are not meant to be taken too seriously (except when they play the actual anthems). Now having celebrated the Royal Navy, you ought to give equal time to the Army with "March of the British Grenadiers".
