"Patatten" is also a name for potato's which is not used as much anymore. So Patatje is translated to "small potato". Also the brand of mayonaise (Calvé) you are talking about is pronounced as "Calvay": the accent on the E is pronounced as a long E (in Dutch EE), Americans would say it like "ay". The stamppot is the general name: hutspot is a kind of stamppot. But something like sauerkraut (zuurkool in Dutch) is a stamppot as well. And the one you are talking about with kale, is "Andijvie stamppot". "Stampen" is "to mash" in Dutch.

I would never eat stamppot in a restaurant, I would always make it myself or not eat it at all. But I am Dutch and not every Dutch person thinks that way. In some parts of the Netherlands they call frieten patat and patatje oorlog is with the sauces and unions but is difference sometimes between different places. In Belgium we say friet, fritten or frietjes but call aardappelen patatten in Flemish dialect. We also have fries with mayo ketchup (curry ketchup or tomato ketchup) and onions combined and that’s called friet special. We don’t do the patatje oorlog here that’s typical from the Netherlands. A typical Belgian thing is stoofvlees or stoofvlees saus that’s the beef stew or just the sauce of the stew. It’s not always made with beef by the way in some places they use pork to make it and in some places they make it more sweet and other places more sour, I prefer the sweet. We've got many stampots,Hutspot (Stew with,carrots,unions,potato,bacon peaces,gravy) ,zuurkoolstampot (sauerkraut stew,sauerkraut potato bacon peaces,gravy), Andijvie (andive,potato, Bacon peaces,gravy),Spinazie (spinach stew,spinach,potato,gravy) and mostly all with rookworst or some other kind of meat. But they are cooked separate from each other and then togetter been stampt,so stamp pot.

Our word for Potato is Aardappel. In Belgium the word for Potato is Patat(ten). They use "Friet" for Fries. In the (north of) the Netherlands we use Patat for Fries. Technically the word Friet is the better word for Fries (fried sliced potato), but I use the word Patat. In the Netherlands we use "je" at the end of words to make them small. Like Kop is the word for Cup. A little or small Cup, becomes Kopje. Boy = Jongen. Little Boy = Jongetje. So we say Patatje or Frietje

In French 'Patates Frites' means 'Potato Sticks or Slices' or as you guys say 'French Fries' or the British call it 'Chips'. In southern Netherlands people call it 'Friet', of the French 'Frites'. We are weird. Patat in most countries is potatoe/patatas/patat. And fried potatoes in most countries is frites/friet/fries. In the upper half of the Netherlands we call fries, patat. In the lower half of the country they call it frites/friet like in Belgium. .. so go to amsterdam and order a patatje oorlog and go to more southern provinces and order a frietje oorlog. (and to make it more complicated some strange snackbars add curry or ketchup to oorlog.. while in 90% of the country it is sateh sauce with mayo and onions if you want).

It's not potatje but patatje.Those people are confused. Stamppot is the generic name for mashed "one-pot" meals. So boerenkool is a stamppot, hutspot is a stamppot, etc. I don't undesrand the hype about stroopwafels. I think I've had them less than 5 times in my life. I'm a bit peeved by the lack of knowledge of these people when they try out our food and not getting an accurate representation of it because they simply eat it wrong and so don't fairly represent our culture. Zuurkool or sauerkraut as they call it, you mix with the gravy that's put in the middle. You mix it throughout. Then you have a bite of it along with a slice of your rookworst. And don't eat the little black balls in it. Stamppot you also mix with the gravy. It's what gives it its full flavour. Then you can opt to have it with meat at the same time or not but since it has meat in it you can choose not to.
