Many may not know (especially if you’re new to Sacramento) but Sacramento has a world-class bike trail that’s easy to access from Midtown Sacramento. It goes from Discovery Park to Folsom, CA. The question is if it’s still safe? In recent years the homeless situation has gotten worse on the trail. In this video I tour the trail from Discovery Park to Sac State and show you what the current trail is like.
Videos that guys like to see! New videos weekly.

Folsom to Sac St and back is a great ride, 40 miles and you don’t go through the homeless encampment

My wife ran her first marathon back in December (CIM was cancelled) so we started off at Beals Point and I rode behind her all the way to Guys West Bridge...we were supposed to go all the way to McKinley but we took a wrong turn over a bridge and it added 3 miles to her marathon...anyways yeah beautiful ride and from Beals Point to Midtown is supposed to be a 2 1/2 hour bike ride (she did her marathon in about 5 hours). I take that same blue diamond trail and haven't had any problems, way more tents these past few years and there's the smell to contend with people using parts of the trail as a restroom...
@GuysontheGrid
@GuysontheGrid 3 года назад
Wow props to you for riding that far at such a low speed. Hopping on the trail by Blue Diamond is more an annoyance than anything. Trying to get past people blocking the trail etc. wouldn’t go on it at night though.

Looks like a really nice trail. I need to check this trail out at some point. I already rode 5K miles in Florida, it's time to get out and explore other states trail systems. Thanks for sharing 👍😊

New sub here. This video came up on "suggested." I will follow most anyone documenting travel in NorCal (because that is what we do), and being that I am in Roseville, any info on Sac will be cool. Although we don't bike or hike, this video was very informative. It's just too sad about the homeless. I help with homeless a couple times a month at Sutters Landing, so, I am doing my part. Really rooting for the city and county to house these folks (Not that they will want to go).

Whoa! I never am on the trail below Guy West Bridge these days, and now I for sure won't. I've been chased by way too many unleashed dogs usually belonging to homeless, so not taking that chance. I think, as a female, I would never go it alone sadly.
@GuysontheGrid
@GuysontheGrid 3 года назад
Yeah it doesn’t affect me. I’m a guy and riding fast through there. Joggers and women need to definitely be more careful. And yes, stray dogs are the main complaints I hear about.
@biketrailing4277

Good to know about the unleashed dogs. I'd probably not go on the trail as a pedestrian - as a cyclist though, it's pretty easy to avoid dogs.

Great video! I'll be in Sacramento this October for the Aftershock festival at Discovery Park and I was thinking of going there by bike, since they offer bike valet parking for the festival. However, my concern is for the safety of going there by bike, specially for the return home at night. I'll be staying near Redwood Park on southwest Sacramento. Any advice would be appreciated!
@GuysontheGrid
@GuysontheGrid 3 года назад
Nice! I’m hoping to hit Aftershock myself! I’ve never been on the bike trail at night. My thought would be if you’re sober, have good lighting, and in a group you should be good. I wouldn’t do it by myself or as a woman though.

@@GuysontheGrid Thank you so much for the answer, I'm still thinking about my options for how to get to Aftershock and will consider going by bike now following your advice. Between Pipe's Bridge and Jibboom Street Bridge, I personally prefer Jibboom. Pipe's Bridge is very bumpy. I go through that area every day and yes, the homeless - while there are a lot of them - leave cyclists alone. I've commuted through that area for a year and I've never had a problem. As far as cycling at night on the trail, while Discovery Park technically closes at dusk, you can still bike through there and won't be bothered. All winter I was commuting through that area well after dusk and never had an issue with the rangers. I was carrying some seriously bright bike lights though. The one issue with Discovery Park after dark is that the gates are closed. You can get around the gate, however, using an elevated sidewalk.

Domt be afraid of the trails, they are homeless people not criminals. While there are exceptions and sometimes trouble to avoid, they live there so they arent trying to start trouble. You will regularly see people parkind and dropping off food water and supplies.

People should be aware. Homeless are people with mental issues (thanks to the state government putting them on the streets back in the 1980s) and a lot with drug and alcohol issues. The other group are people who've been priced out of where they rent. Some of them are able to stay employed. There is another group that live in their cars and work also. The entire situation is so sad as I can recall when you didn't see this problem years ago.
