Very good reaction. Probably more perceptive than you think. Your first comment straight from the start about 'from the 40's', is close. Jisoo takes from her Korean heritage with this one, old Korean folk poetry...her great grandmother would be so proud. Even though this is all in Korean, it still was the most watched kpop video by far, in all of 2023. It is also the most expensive kpop vid, filmed mostly at Universal studios. And interestingly, it is the first big hit in all of world music this century to be fimed on film...a fact you perceptively almost pointed out. This song has already become the 9th most viewed kpop solo in history, and the only soloists ahead of her, are Lisa and Jennie (her 'band'' mates in Blackpink) and the famous Psy (of Gangnam Style fame). Even though Lisa is my fave from the group, and has a full english hit with a billion streams called Money, I would recommend Rose's (another member of BP) all English song, On The Ground. Blackpink vids are all set, no green screens. Also for something fresh, Blackpink's little sister group, Babymonster, has just debuted, and is making big waves. Yeah it takes a bit to learn the commonalities of the K-pop genre but it's pretty common for members of a K-Pop group to release solo music while they're still in the group

My recommendation is IU. Many many songs but I suggest the song "Lilac". For a song in English - you can go for Le Sserafim's song "Perfect Night".

please check out another Blackpink member's solo her name is Rosé and she has two solos 'On the Ground' and 'Gone' Rosé is the only member of Blackpink to have writing credit on their solo work. Both songs have music videos on the Blackpink channel.

The others are Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa which they all have solo projects. Jisoo was the last of the members to have a solo when all of the fans were demanding that YG Entertainment (The groups agency) to treat Jisoo with equality as the rest of the members. K-pop usually has concepts for each of their groups and BLACKPINK is what is known as "Girl Crush" which means they run this town or boss bitch vides. Yes, BLACKPINK is a 4 member girl group (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa). Each member has released their own solos, which reflect their individual personalities and style. Jisoo (pronounced like Gee-Sue) is perhaps the most Korean (and perhaps most elegant) member of BLACKPINK. Her song is quite different from the typical BLACKPINK (and indeed K-Pop) song. Jisoo wanted a song her parents could enjoy, and her song is composed like a traditional Korean poem, with elements of Trot (an old Korean style of music popular pre- K-Pop). If you want a proper taste of BLACKPINK, I recommend "Ddu-du Ddu-du", "Kill this Love", and for a little contrast, "Stay".

A bit of background on Kpop might perk your interest more. I got into Kpop in 2011, so I have experienced the biggest chunk of it. To start off with, Kpop is a genre, but not like we Westerners would think. Kpop idols go through extreme amounts of training, some up to 10 years, before they debut in a group. When they begin their journey, they are extremely professional. Their training consists of singing, dancing, rapping, modeling for photos and fashion and acting as well as giving interviews. They are complete entertainers that are expected to be able to perform music in any genre. Most speak multiple languages, and many are proficient with different instruments. The idol groups work for an entertainment company which is normally the company that invested to train them. Their initial contract is seven years from debut. Musically, Kpop draws from many different genres, but is most influenced by American pop and hip-hop. Typically, I put the groups into one of two camps. There are groups that are more traditional, with songs that have heavy hooks, and great harmony, and there are the more hip-hop orientated groups that put more rap into their songs. I am an old guy, so I prefer the more traditional sounding groups. What intrigued me when I first listed to Kpop was how much Motown influence I could hear in some of the songs. It was as if someone snuck into the Motown vault and stole a few songs. Another thing that stuck out was the obvious Michael Jackson influence that permeated Kpop, and that is obviously a good thing. I would hear certain Kpop songs that sounded exactly like what MJ would have done...I could even hear MJ's voice in my mind singing it. The great thing about Kpop is the variety in the music. Hearing one song from a group does not tell the whole story. The Kpop industry is full of song writers, and they also buy music on the open market, so they are getting some of the best songs from songwriters around the world. Not only do you get great pop songs, but you also get great ballads and theater style songs. Their videos are always top notch as well. They don't make them like that in the West anymore. Lyrically, the songs are almost always "G" rated...PG 13 at worst. In order for them to perform on TV, they are not allowed to curse of use vulgar language. One final thought. You cannot really compare Kpop idols to Western pop stars. The real comparison is Kpop idols to professional athletes. Kpop idols train like professional athletes and they compete like professional athletes. In Korea, Kpop is a competitive field. Each week, there are multiple music shows where Kpop groups who are promoting a new single battle live on stage. The results are a combination of things like digital and physical sales as well as votes. The Kpop idol makes the Western pop star look like a lazy, minimally talented performer at best.

K-Pop really is just pop in Korean but some songs really give off the supposed "k-pop" vibe, a group that does that very well is twice and they are one of the top 3 most popular k-pop groups. A song I would recommend is Moonlight Sunrise by twice!

I know the K-pop world can be confusing since they do things really differently but let me explain a little. Blackpink is the biggest girl group they have been out for about 8 years. The group has four members which do solo activities for example Jennie was in a show called the Idol where the weekend was also in it . Jisoo the girl in this song is also an actress but mainly in Korean shows. They do solo activities while still being in the group. Right now the members have opened their own companies(labels) which for now is focused on their solo activities but might become a label with other artist as well. For BTS they are the biggest boy group of all times. They have been active longer then blackpink but started to get recognition around the same time. Bts has 7 members jungkook being the youngest which is the guy that gave Michael Jackson vibes. Bts is considered to be the door for other idols to enter westerners. K-pop before bts was not global and most didn’t even made it to American shows or awards until bts came in. They have been nominated in the Grammies and performed. Also have won about 12 billboard awards and an American music award as well. Nowadays there are a lot of other groups that are successful in the western industry thanks to bts. Good example to this is NEWJEANS they are a girl group that debuted about a year ago but have already won 2 billboard awards. K-pop is a very competitive industry the way it works is that in Korea there are 3 big companies which are like music labels. These companies recruit people normally they start training very young from 9-14 years old. They audition and if they see potential in you they start training you. Training can rage from 10 years to 1 year it really depends on the debut project you are in. They go through different evaluations for years where they train to sing, dance, stage presence, some even take selfie classes or language classes. It depends on what the company prioritizes. Of course after years they choose the best among the trainees eliminating the other. Once the group is formed then the company debuts them. These companies however have full control on these idols. In K-pop the idol can not have a significant other publicly. Some can’t say bad words and things like their diets are controlled. Of course if a group is well established they are a little bit more lenient.

The reason that you thought it was S-log is because none of the video was actually shot digitally, it was entirely shot on film at Universal Studios and on location at Millennium Biltmore Hotel, also in LA. All of Blackpink's videos (and the girls solo work) are extremely high budget with the highest production values (eg. No green screen used and all practical sets), although this is the only one shot using film.

I think everyone has covered Jisoo and Blackpink. So, I'll just add my two cents. Once you start listening to Blackpink, you will find they have a different vibe from other K-pop groups.
