======= "40:1" SONG STORY =======
The battle of Wizna (7th-10th of September 1939). 720 Polish infantrymen, commanded by Władysław Raginis, defended a small fortified line near the village of Wizna against more than 40’000 German soldiers while being under a heavy artillery barrage.
======= "40:1" LYRICS =======
Baptised in fire.
Forty to one
So silent before the storm
Awaiting command
A few has been chosen to stand
As one outnumbered by far
The orders from high command
Fight back, hold your ground!
In early September it came
A war unknown to the world
No warning they entered that land
That is protected by polish hand
Unless you are forty to one
Your force will soon be undone
Baptised in fire
Forty to one
Spirit of spartans
Death and glory
Soldiers of Poland
Second to none
Wrath of the Wehrmacht brought to a halt
The 8th of September it starts
The rage of the Reich
A barrage of mortars and guns
Stand past, the bunkers will hold
The captain has pledged his life
I'll face my fate here!
The sound of artillery strike
So fierce
The thunder of guns
So come, bring on all that you've got
Come hell, come high water, never stop
Unless you are forty to one
Your lives will soon be undone
Baptised in fire
40 to 1
Spirit of spartans
Death and glory
Soldiers of poland
Second to none
Wrath of the Wehrmacht brought to a halt
Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, fathers and sons at war
Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, fathers and sons at war
Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, buried in history
No vermin may enter that land
That is protected by polish hand
Unless you are forty to one
Your force will soon be undone
Baptised in fire
Forty to one
Spirit of spartans
Death and glory!
Soldiers of Poland
Second to none
Wrath of the Wehrmacth brought to a halt

For people skipping the history part: This one performance did more for the polish pride and respect than any history book or movie ever did. History books, even polish ones, almost always downplayed the Polish resistance during the war, and this battle was barely even mentioned. When it was mentioned, it was ridiculed because of war propaganda that the polish army "was using cavalry charges against the nazi tank". The song and this performance in particular actually changed how the story was taught in Polish schools, and the church of Poland even gifted an officer's sword to the band as thanks for what they have done for their countries spirit and the memory of the fallen.
@brigidtheirish

As I recall, the prior treatment is because of Soviet revisionism and propaganda that no one bothered to correct once the Iron Curtain fell.

@@Andreas-yy8uk Apparently there was a cavalry charge... Consisting of two men. The actual polish cavalry was assigned to help evacuate people mainly. I think that's where the story spiraled into the myth (mainly allied propaganda saying "poor Poland"). But yeah that myth is massive.

People also forget that Poland just came out of a 100 years occupation of Germany and Imperial Russia, and was then invaded by the Soviet Union in the 20's under Lenin that destroyed a lot of Polish infrastructure. Polish soldiers by 1939 were simply fighting with what they had after a century of oppression and decades of outside inflicted poverty. One needs only google pictures of Warsaw during ww2 to see how hard the Poles were fighting throughout the war, and even after.

I’ve read a lot of Poland 1939 Campaign. The plan was Poland to hold for two weeks so France could attack Germany’s lightly defended west, followed by Britain. They wussed out. Poland held for FOUR WEEKS even after the Soviets attacked on September 17. That’s why they stayed those three days, to give France and Britain time, per the plan.

The true betrayal was after the war and leaving Poland to the soviets, should of kept pushing whilst on a war footing. Would of been expensive but having 2 world powers fighting a third on a single continent after large bodies of men are already in the theatre and naval superiority is assured and soviets are pre nuclear. That said you can always rely on French leadership to focus on France only unless it’s to their benefit, reinforcing their own defences took priority.

One person I wish Sabaton would make a song about is Witold Urbanowicz. He was a well renowned pilot even before the start of WW2, and a native polish. Before the war even officially started he shot down recon airplanes. He fled to the UK where he commanded a polish air squadron (which they do reference in Aces of Exile,) and became an ace with the most amount of air victories in the Battle of Britain for a time. He then transferred to the Asian theater and aided against the Japanese alongside Chinese and American pilots, where he also achieved double digit air victories, in one instance against 6 Japanese pilots. He received many medals from all nations and the respect of friend and foe. To make this even more unbelievable, it is reported that not a single plane he flew throughout the war was hit by enemy fire.

Loved the reaction ! I will personally recommend you 'Inmate 4859' it's about Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier who let himself get taken to Auschwitz under a false identity to spy on the germans and keep making war from the camp. He sadly got executed after the end of the war by a falsified trial and everything got hide until 1989, he then got rehabilitate and is considered as "one of the biggest hero of the war"
@wikingagresor

It is even worse than that. Communists knew that he could be a symbol for patriots, so they executed him after a fake trial and buried his body with other Home Army heroes in some unknown grave never to be found. Right now, dedicated team of historians and archaeologists is looking to find his remains and they are close.

That man has perhaps the biggest balls in all of history. Most people who were ridiculously brave enough to infiltrate Auschwitz (after already fighting for Poland since WW1) would have said "I've done enough, it's time to retire." But he then went on to fight the Soviet occupiers. They, not the Germans, were the ones to finally kill him. Of all the amazing badasses in Poland in those days, he stands above them all.

In total, the "Wizna" position consisted of 720 soldiers, including 20 officers, 6 75 mm guns and 24 cekaemy, 18 rkm and 2 ppanc rifles. The whole force was commanded by Capt. Władysław Raginis. The main task of the Wizna crew was to defend the crossings on the Narew and Biebrza Rivers. The German group directed to fight on the "Wizna" section consisted of about 42,000 soldiers, 450 tanks and armored guns, 274 guns and mortars and 195 anti-tank guns

Since you thought that the Poles meekly let the Germans into their territory, you should read about: 1. Defense of Westerplatte. It is about the Polish Military Transit Storehouse located in the area known as the "Free City of Gdańsk" (a structure created by the League of Nations, theoretically managed by the Entente countries, in practice managed by the Germans). Thus, the facility was completely surrounded by pro-German territories and cut off from any support from the Polish Army. About 200 soldiers of the Polish Army, no chance of relief and no heavy equipment, armed only with one 75mm gun (still from World War I), two anti-tank 37mm cannons, four 81mm mortars, 18 heavy machine guns, 17 hand machine guns and a few light machine guns, and personal small arms typical of the beginning of the Second World War, tagainst Germans infantry equipped with armored cars, supported by heavy land artillery, and the entire artillery of the battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" (including four 280mm guns and twelve 150mm guns ) and Luftwaffe planes (the Germans did not use only tanks from all their arsenal, because there was simply no room for them). These 200 Poles were ordered to defend themselves for 12 hours, to show that they would not give anything "for free" ... THEY LASTED 7 DAYS! 2. There was also a Polish Post office in Gdańsk, and on September 1, the Germans attacked it as well. It was defended by CIVILS, employees of this post office. They only surrendered when the Germans set fire to the building with flamethrowers. 3. The Battle of Bzura mentioned in Sabaton History. 4. The Battle of Mokra. 5. Defense of Warsaw. 6. Defense of Hel. 7. Defense of Kępa Oksywska. And many more examples. By the way: it is a myth that tanks are attacked by cavalry with sabers in hand. Indeed, the Polish Army had cavalry, also in large tactical units (up to the brigade level), but these units were most often engaged in combat on foot, equipped with machine guns, 37mm anti-tank cannons and anti-tank UR rifles, and horses were mainly used to move or perform quick maneuvers and surprising attacks on an enemy who did not expect it ... and so also in the Battle of Krojanty - which was the source of this myth - the attack of the 18th Cavalry Regiment of the Pomeranian Cavalry Brigade on a German infantry unit, which, unexpectedly for the Poles, received support from hidden armored cars in a nearby forest.

Battle of Hodow was another interesting one. It faced 100 Winged Hussars and 300 Panceri vs 30,000 Tatars. The Poles fortified the village of Hodow and fought off the Tatar invasion. The Poles lost about 100 men and the Tatars left after losing close to 2k. The battle was an excellent example of what well disciplined and highly trained soldiers can do from a fortified position. And to their credit the Tatars themselves were excellent cavalry warriors and not some amateurs.

Here's even a pretty amaizing full video from that event with Sabaton concert included: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D2SlmgvjH2k.html And for sure sir, you need to react to their newest story animation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QSUclZ6Ma28.html About Woodstock Festival (currently Pol'and'Rock Festival) - it's probably the biggest music event that takes place every single year, for 3 days, with the biggest and smallest music stars and bands from all over the world on a multiple stages, playing at the same time, on a field under the sky in Poland - and all of that thanks to Jerzy Owsiak, who also is responsible for every year charity donations for medical equipment called WOŚP - Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy. At Sabaton's concert, there was (if I'm not wrong) over 500 000 people (mostly, but not only from Poland). That flag was a special request from the band, so people did enjoy and loved that, since it was a surprise and something very unique even for Woodstock. After they played the "40:1", the whole crowd did start to sing "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego", which is our national anthem - it was also a form of say "Thank You" from the crowd, especially Poles, to the band, since mr Jerzy Owsiak already taught people to shout "Dziękujemy!" ("Thank You") after each concert and each band. This event, this festival does have such unique atmosphere and even more myths or traditions that many people can only imagine. I know sir that you're learning a lot of history of Poland lately, so I'll give you two really great animated videos. The Unconquered - narrated History of Poland during World War II ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q88AkN1hNYM.html Animated History of Poland - animation with a lot of hidden mentions (most important events, famous people, famous places, etc.). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7SpddNW7a3k.html

There's a third song that references the "300" theme. 40:1 - Compares the Polish soldiers to the Spartans when Germany invaded Poland Sparta - About the actual battle of Thermopolae (I have no idea if I spelled it close to correctly) Coat of Arms - Italy tried to invade Greece in 1940, but the blood of Leonidas rose to stop them.

Love your Sabaton reactions, great songs and it's nice that you look into the stories behind the songs! But as a Swedish person and a Sabaton fan I have to say, you haven't reacted to Sabaton until you've reacted to Swedish Pagans. It's one of their most played songs live and it has become a bit of a joke between the band and the audience whether they're going to play it or not.

Since 'tis the season to be jolly and we're already doing Sabaton, why not give the guitarist Tommy's band Majestica a try? If you like A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, you might want to check out one of these jolly good songs from Majestica's album of the same name: ⠀ Ghost of Marley - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_RKRbA9gRY.html ⠀ Ghost of Christmas Past - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Ol8DlEPEaM.html Not only does Tommy play the guitar, he's the main vocalist - and Scrooge. The album is basically a metal opera adaptation of the book, but these are my favourites.

I was at Woodstock Festival when Sabaton gave their concert. I was standing under the white part of the flag. It was actually quite translucent, you could really well see what's happening on stage through the fabric. However, it got really hot really quick under this flag. And I mean not only the atmosphere, but the temperature. It trapped the heat radiating from tens of thousands of headed bodies underneath, so it felt like in sauna. By the time it was retracted, I've seen two girls fainting. Myself, I was extremely short of breath after this song :) BTW this flag was provided not by the band, but by Festival organizers. It was sewn especially for Euro 2012 football European championships, which were held jointly in Poland and Ukraine. Later it was used at many sports and cultural events.

Her great grandparents immigrated here, and 2 more generations up to my grandparents only married Polish people in America because the community was tight knit. Even her DNA test proved it. @TouchyReactions - If U want to know about Polish spirit - to my knowledge there was no other country in Europe where Germans would execute 100 random citizens for one German soldier killed by Polish Resistance/Underground. Polish Resistance really got under nazzi skin. The sacrifices were wildly accepted and the resistance continued despite the high blood price.

This is a favorite of mine both as a Sabaton and personal fav as well.. I like it because it was a David vs Goliath vs an underdog that would not give up. And another fav (both personal and band) if none suggested it yet is Sabaton's similar one to this one, " Resist and Bite," about an outnumbered Czhek(forgive the spelling , late when writing this) light infantry unit singlehandedly took on a Superior German tank regiment.
