Great reaction to an amazing song :). I remember when I was a PhD candidate, there was this Brazilian candidate and during lunch we started discussing. I don't remember how but we ended up talking about WW2, and he said "Do you know we participated too" for which I answered "I know. Smoking SNakes". He first was shocked that I actually even heard of that name but then got a suspiscious look before saying "You're a Sabaton fan too?" That was one of the best conversation ice breaker I've had in my life :)

We Brazilians feel proud and thank Sabaton and you for telling our story.

Guys, it is so cool. Every 25 Abril the people of Montese celebrate their liberation and as part of the celebrations the city traditionally still sing the Brazilian Expeditionary Anthem in Portuguese. It is very beautiful to watch.

These guys fought for a whole day. They fought against a whole german division. They thought they're figthing against an american division. When They realized that they're fighting against only 3 brazilian soldiers, they reconized how brave they're.

Don't feel dum, you're not alone. If it wouldn't be for Sabaton I would never even imagine that Brasil was ever involved in WW II. Sabaton are great history teachers beside beeing a fantastic band and a bunch of extraordinary people. I'm a history nerd, but it's impossible to know everything, life's to short for all the wars ever fought. Song is fantastic, so uplifting, despite the tragic events. this song honors us..the true story of 3 brazilian soldiers in the taking of monte castle italia 1945 when the brazilian army freed italy from nazism...the 3 alone..faced a german infantry company with 150 men... by 1 hour so that their platoon was not destroyed..with that, the platoon retreated and managed to save themselves...when the ammunition ran out, they left for melee...when they were killed the German commander was impressed to learn that he was violently attacked..por 3 soldiers and not for an entire company as they thought... and they buried them with sayings in German... 3 Brazilian heroes were 28 years old 26 years old and 25 years old

The story of the 3 heroes, Italy 1945. In the year 1945, in the middle of the Italian campaign, a battle of Brazilian soldiers faced more than 100 German soldiers, in the midst of the combat 3 soldiers distanced themselves from the main group and found themselves in an advantageous position to send fire on the German troops, as well these 3 soldiers started a barrage of fire which the German troops believed was another battle of Brazilian soldiers, thus causing the fire to be divided and in this way that the main group of Brazilian soldiers could better protect themselves and retreat before the enemy superior troop, these 3 soldiers continued the fire until the end of their ammunition, at which moment they knew that they had to keep the fire on themselves so that the main troop could retreat, closed their bayonets and burst against the Germans, being killed immediately, the German group advanced cautiously because they believed it was a larger troop, and they were incredulous when they saw that they were dealing with only one thing. 3 solitary soldiers, before such an act the German commander carried out the burial of the 3 Brazilian soldiers (something totally unusual in that theater of operations), and finally placing 3 crosses with the words in German, “Drei Brasilianischen Helden” or “Three Brazilian heroes ”, this story inspired the band Sabaton to compose the song "Smoken Snakes" in honor of these soldiers. There are some disagreements in this story pointed out by scholars, but almost always these are indicated as the 3 soldiers Geraldo Baêta da Cruz, then 28 years old, born in Entre Rios de Minas, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Arlindo Lúcio da Silva, 25, born in São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Geraldo Rodrigues de Souza, 26, born in Rio Preto, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. These 3 soldiers were awarded the following medals, campaign medal, Blood of Brazil and second class combat medal. In the decree that granted them these last decorations, it reads, "For an action of exceptional deed in the campaign of Italy". P.S. Why were Brazilian soldiers in WW2 known as smoking snakes? The story is told how when Hitler learned that Brazil had declared war on Germany, he would have said "it is easier for a snake to smoke than for Brazil to participate in the war".

The story is about 3 soldiers from the Brazilian expeditionary corps that served in Italy during WW2. and no one knows exactly what happened but there is a cross with German writing saying "To the 3 Brasilia heroes" somewhere near Monte Casino I think and you aren't far off with your translation "Smoking snakes eternal is your victory" Fun fact this song is performing by the Brazilian army

These three Brazilian soldiers fought alone against a division of 100 German soldiers to save their comrades from their patrol brigade who were under artillery fire, going around a hill and attacking the Germans in the back with their grenades and machine guns, using everything they could. They had even been killed by the Germans who turned to shoot at the three.

Now, what is most absurd and awe inspiring from this song and their history, is that Brasil was never that involved in an european conflict and fairly isolated from the world, so the Brazillian people did not have a personal motive (unless if we count losing hundreds of sailors to Germany) to go to another continent and fight in a war for people that possibly never acknowledged the existence of Brasil in the first place. Those 3 man not only did that, but as their honor dictated, gave their lives for the cause. From our perspective, these brave countryman (although drafted) crossed the world to essentially fight and die for the libeartion of Italian people. A sacrifice that still is appreciated to this day, as several italian cities host memorials to the Expeditionary Force of Brasil.

I know that Brazil was at war from 1941, when Paraguay - allied to germany - declared war to Brazil. About the origin of the Cobras Fumantes (Smoking Snakes), I heard another version than the Sabaton History. It would have been said on the German radio that the Germans would see a snake smoking a pipe before a Brazilian soldier arrives on European soil.

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) was a land military force made up of 25,834 men and women, which during the Second World War was responsible for BRAZIL's participation alongside the Allies in the ITALY Campaign, in its last two phases (the rupture of the LINE GOTHIC and the final Allied Offensive on that front). The FEB was made up of the 1st EXPEDITIONARY INFANTRY DIVISION (1st DIE). While pretty much every country in the Americas declared war on the Axis powers, only 4 actually sent soldiers to fight in combat: The United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil.

It all started with some German u-boots attacking Brazilian merchant ships in the North and South Atlantic...so what to do but send everything you have!!! So Brazil sent, to Italy, the FEB (Brazilian Expeditionary Force), composed of the Brazilian army and air force. While the Brazilian navy would play its role in the North and South Atlantic. That was it.

Heck, look at Panama during WW2 we had many units down there protecting the canal zone. but 1 unit formed was the 551st PIB 1 of the independent Airborne units. the unit was sent in 1943 for the planned invasion of the Vichy French island of Martinique that was suppling German U boats. the mission never happened as the Vichy surrender as soon as they got wind of this. the 551st went on to fight in southern France during operation Dragoon, then in the French Alps and straight into the Battle of the Bulge were it took 85% casualties the highest # of all Airborne units during that battle it went into the battle with 643 men and came out with 14 officers and 96 men

There were around 607 sailors dead with the sinking of ships, obvius repulse of the country, the Graf Spee sinked in Montevideo Bay after been chased by the british along the Atlantic, so the global incidents in WW2 are almost forseeing

I was at the live show in Juiz de Fora where the fans invited a war veteran who attended that show and was 93 years young and who fought with the Brazilian 25'000 Other soldiers in Northern Italy with the British and American troops against the nazis.

It snows in south of Brasil, where the climate and geography are verry similar to Europe. But the brazilian troops of the FEB were from the mideast of the coutry. Also, FEB was the only army to capture more enemies then their own force. That without counting the tanks, battle vehicles, weapons and amunitions they secured from the germans.

A large battle take place in the south atlantic too. Look at the hunt for the Graf Spee, that battlecruiser sunk a lot of cargos until the allies send ships to hunt the ship and finally the germans sunk it to avoid capture.

Hmmmm…Brazil…do we know of any Brazilian singers on RU-vid who grew up watching Rambo and signed up for the Brazilian army at the age of 18 and who may or may not be wearing his own military jacket (dusted off from storage?) as he proudly sings this very same song. Man if you get time you should check out dethklok the music is great and they have a heavy metal cartoon called metalocalypse that is a spoof of heavy metal music. They're all great musicians tho. I think you would get a kick out of it. Episodes are short as well. Awaken would probably be a good starter song as an introduction to the band

Brazilian people hate war, we don't have the same culture, due to the suffering of the people during the dictatorship, we don't like soldiers or the army, nobody wants war here, but only this time, only these 3 heroes fill us with pride, not because they killed, but because our soldiers helped with food to rebuild houses and in the health of the Italian people, these 3 went to help a small town far from their battalion and when they saw the enemy they lured them away, they sacrificed themselves not to take lives, but to save did not surrender or flee but delayed the enemies, They are real examples and Heroes for the Brazilian people. They were only 3 to defend the place, they killed almost 1000 enemy soldiers, they couldn't see where the shots were coming from and they thought they were fighting with countless soldiers, when they killed the Brazilians and saw that there were only 3 they found it so heroic that they buried them with honors
