American's First Trying Aussie Pies, Sausage Rolls and Lamingtons 

Mike, a hint - you don't eat pies with knives and forks. It's hand held! And my favourite is just a plain meat pie. But yeah, they're pretty good! Had one for my tea last night

Caramel slices are nice but vanilla slices are better. Cannot beat a good meat pie with tomato sauce. No knife and fork required mate.

Plain is definitely superior when it comes to the Aussie meat pie. With tommy sauce if you desire. Sausage rolls are awesome and lamingtons are amazing. Definitely try for a vanilla slice.

I was screaming 😱 NO NOO NOOO when you picked up the knife and fork to spread the sauce is one thing, but and quote me here no aussie will ever eat it with cutlery you eat it by hand hence the pastry and if you don't burn your mouth on the first bite it ain't hot effort. This old Aussie watched your video of J.J's Aussie pies, sausage rolls and lamingtons.. As you were unboxing, I had a thought of going to the 24hr servo & getting a pipping hot pie, it's now 11:35 pm Wednesday the 11th.. Shortly after hitting send I'm on the road. ☺️

I make all those items for my coffee shop! Didn’t realise they were all specifically Australian😄 Most of the best pies I ate as a kid (60’s) were baked by retired army ‘cooks’ and came direct from the back of their pie truck baked that morning. Loved a pie with mushy peas

I'm 44 and have lived in Australia all my life. The best meat pies I have ever had were from the Bronzed Aussie in downtown LA. Hidden in a lane way behind a Subway outlet. Was amazing

I’m guessing that I won’t be the only Aussie to tell you that you don’t eat meat pies with a knife and fork. Just hold it in your hand, or straight out of a paper bag. And I notice that you quickly mastered the ho,ho, ho, hot that everyone does when eating it.

A lukewarm Four n Twenty pie at the footy brings back fond memories for me. One may hear the pie boy shout 'cold pies, hot drinks!'

Pies are designed so you can eat them on the hoof! One of my favourite foods since childhood in the 1950's. Pies are one of the few foods that have improved over the last 70 years. In the 1950's one had to spit half the contents out but they are delicious these days.

Always hold a pie in your hands to eat it. That's the right way.

The best way to add the sauce is under the pastry top. Either squirt it in through a hole in the top or lift the lid with a knife and squeeze it in from the side. Steak and Bacon pies are my favourite. I don't think I've ever eaten a Mystery Bag with a knife and fork though. Anzac Biscuits were made by families during WW1 to send to their sons and husbands overseas. They were packed in tin boxes and stayed fresh for a very long time.

Yum but like the others just a plain meat pie and so happy you had the right condiment as a meat pie and sausage roll is nothing without the tomato sauce lol So Aussie and must say Caramel Slice yum but a Vanilla Slice is Heaven Glad you liked em :)

Out and about it's a fast food eaten straight out of the bag, I always have frozen pies in the freezer and when eaten at home knife and fork is OK. A South Australian thing is the pie floater, pie upside down in thick pea soup with tomato sauce eaten with a spoon.

Currently having some sort of rain bomb in my state of Queensland. It’s the perfect weather for pies and sausage rolls. Just a hint though. I know the pie is hot but don’t be delicate with it. It’s meant to be eaten with your hands. That’s how we eat them at the football. There is nothing like 3rd degree burns to the inside of your mouth when eating them. 😂😂😂

Here in South Australia, there's heaps of country bakeries who provide superb pies, pasties and sausage rolls. You can find at least one or 2 bakeries in a county town depending on size. But in Adelaide, i prefer Villi's pies and pasties.

Slice one of those lamingtons in half horizontally, add raspberry or strawberry jam and as freshly whipped cream. Place the other half on top. Eat.

When I get a lamington I want it baked that day, all outer parts cut off after cooking sponge then it's two pieces that size having cream in between then coated, is normally the bakery standard type here too. A lamington round cake may have jam and cream.

Props to JJ. That pie looks the goods. However, a pie is traditionally eaten from the hand (IE no knife and fork) or out of a paper bag. Give that a go next time. Take a bite, then add sauce to the rest, wait a mo, and repeat. Ditto for the sausage roll.

Awesome reaction! You need a cold drink with a hot pie or sausage roll to wash it down if it’s too hot. Blisters on your hard palate are not a laughing matter! Typically flavoured milk, a beer, or a cold soft drink in a can or bottle are acceptable accompaniments. 🙂

Nothing beats a decent pie

In Australia ..you can get a cheap 6 pack of pies for less than 5$at aldi supermarkets..very good for the price or pack of 4 pies of a famous brand fourn twenty for $ 10 at woolies and Coles supermarkets there are lots of different brands ..or specialty bakery s between$ 5 and $6 for a hot pie and sasage rolls they are top taste and quality ..about 10 different types to chose hot ready to eat in or takeaway / takeout..every bread bakery has hot pies or cold to reheat at home...l eat a few a week like most Aussies plenty of energy from pies..steak and mushrooms is my favourite..

Yum, love sausage rolls and am a big fan of meat pies as well as pasties. I love laminations though I prefer laminating fingers as there is a better cake/chocolate/ coconut ratio. Glad you enjoyed the pies.

Hi from a random Aussie. You are making me want to go and have a sausage roll right now! You are truly fortunate that you got some hand-made top-end pies and sausage rolls -- because of course, any iconic food is going to have its greater and lesser versions, with mass-produced ones going down in quality. Mind you, I think it's pretty difficult to ruin a sausage roll (unlike a pie).

IMO forget vegemite, rosemary and lamb is *the* flavour of Australia....If you haven't already, you might like to check out some of the "Australia Day Lamb" ads - some have been very clever (a couple not so much)....

Tomato sauce on the sausage roll too. Here’s how you eat a pie though - you use a small spoon & add sauce on top - then dig in from the top. Eat all the meat and top layer (I add more sauce as I go). Then add more sauce & eat the casing. This is how I ate a pie when I was a kid & still do at 61. Haha. The alternative is at the football (Aussie Rules) - you eat a pie holding it in your hands. Finally I’ll be in LA in Dec - going to find the Aussie Pie place so I can share with my American friends. 🙏🌟🙏

Eating again with fun and enjoyment Did you know that well cooked green peas are the traditional touch with meat pies. In South Australia they serve pies in a dish of peas called"floaters ' Does that whet your appetite

Here in South Australia we historically had a lot of Cornish migration. I can’t vouch for the pasty’s in Cornwall but I promise that a (proper Australian) Cornish pasty will blow your mind. It’s a mixture of diced vegetables and peas, sometimes some meat, in the nicest pastry ever.

My favourite meat pies are steak and mushroom plus the steak and kidney.

A good lamington has raspberry jam in the middle

I mentioned them before. My personal favourite is the Steak And Mushroom Pie. Why not order some Beef Sausages to make yourself a Sausage Sizzle it's quick and easy. Cook some Sausages and Onions. Place your Sausage diagonally across a slice of bread, top with Onions and your choice of Sauce either Barbecue or Ketchup.

Can’t beat a lamb n rosemary pie, and a well made sausage roll, next you need to try snowballs, they’re bomb, chocolate coated marshmallow topped with decimated coconut

When in Australia I was taught the correct way to eat the Aussie pie 1, The pie, sausage roll or pasty must be eaten from a paper bag 2. The sauce is tomato sauce no ketchup to Aussies there is a big difference between the two 3. The ideal drink to accompany this is Iced Coffee ( Made with a double shot of expresso and about 600ml of chilled milk) never add ice cubes as this is considered a hanging offence to Aussies. Never ever eat them using a knife and fork you only get pitying looks from the Aussies if you do this.

We would eat these by hand in Oz while watching Rugby League. Also you would probably only put sauce on the plain beef and onion and the sausage roll, not the other flavour pies..
