Fellow Legends, welcome! Today we return with another epic Fat Electrician video, this time with the absolutely LEGENDARY story of Lewis Millet. I apologize about the pronunciation at the beginning, I was unsure if his name was French in origin or not to begin the video. This man was truly built different, and his service record is nothing short of herculean. This is a man that truly wanted to do something with his life, and saved many lives doing it. I have nothing but the utmost respect for this man. What are your thoughts on the deeds of Lewis Millet? Did you hear any stories of him from your family or other service members from that era? Do you think he's that absolute GOAT? I absolutely loved this video and do absolutely recommend that you go and check out the original video to show some support for the source material!
For RU-vid Terms of Service and Advertisers, all firearms presented in this video are handled appropriately by trained personnel in the proper designated areas. All military members shown in the video have been trained with proper trigger discipline and the Benelli M4/M1014 is not a fully automatic implement. All viewers that watch this content should absolutely practice proper firearm care and safety. Thank you.

As someone with 10/20 vision without glasses and 12 years in the Army, you can join with glasses. You just have to have vision correctable to 20/20 at least. And you have to wear BCGs (Birth Control Glasses, super thick framed glasses, still have and wear 2 pair 23 years later, they are neigh indestructible). My vision, corrected, is 30/20. I can see a .22 casing and if it is still live at 15 yards easily.

I just read a letter from the front of an American soldier in WW1, and came to a bit of an epiphany - the "Kriegers never take off their masks" trope may have actually started with some American units, who, since gas was being used like it was going out of style, decided to sleep with their gas masks on due to regular night-time gas attacks. This kind of freaked out the French they were stationed with, who rarely saw their faces and often only put their masks on when gas was detected. Might have weirded out the British too.

Regarding the comment about America's thoughts toward joining WW2, while I am not a historian in any sense it is a topic I have looked into a lot over the years as someone with an interest in world history. In summary: 1) The world had gone through the Great Depression, and the US was still reeling from its effects in the 1930s 2) After WW1 and being involved in a number of the smaller conflicts that spawned, the US had adopted something of an isolationist mindset, i.e. worry about our backyard first and let the world tend to itself (such as that worked in the 1920s-1930s). There was even a whole movement called America First who were vocal advocates of the US withdrawing from involvement in world politics except what was necessary to maintain isolationist solitude 3) Congress had very much cut back US defense spending, especially in the Depression era, both because they didn't want to sustain anything more than absolutely necessary to fund other things; and because it was believed the US' geographical position relative to likely foes would give the US months or even years to prepare if anything serious happened 4) Information flowed much slower in that era for the majority of people. It's easy to forget in the modern era, but even cheaply available radios were something of a new thing for most people. A lot of people got their info from news papers and newsreels in theaters, unless you had enough money for a radio, knew someone who had a radio, or hung out where a public-use radio was available. This meant that the people who were best able to determine what was going on in the world was people in positions of power - business, military and government, and not all of them agreed on what the best course was. Some of it was lack of information, some of it was ideology, some of it was politics - the usual mix of complications. However, by the late 1930s it was fairly clear conflict was coming. Not everyone believed this and hoped there were peaceful ways to avert conflict, but many with access to the relevant information understood it was a matter of "when" and not "if." The issue was convincing people who didn't have the same information or who were determined to oppose it no matter what. The US made a number of political and economic moves - expanding patrols in the Atlantic, cutting off strategic resource exports to aggressor states, ramping up US armed forces in various territories, etc - with a mind toward publicly covering themselves while staying out of the brewing war. Yet the US also did a number of moves that stretched the definition of neutrality a fair bit (like quietly providing material aid to England) and left little doubt about where their allegiances lay if push came to shove. What caught everyone off guard was just how fast events moved after 1937, and it was harder and harder to stay neutral as details leaked about what was happening in China, Africa and Eastern Europe. Pearl Harbor was the final kick that pushed the US into the war properly, but by 1940 the writing was on the wall. The question was how things would go down. The fact the US' catalyst was an attack by an outside power single-handedly swept away most opposition to involvement. That isn't to say there wasn't plenty of division still, but it's hard to try and "stay out of the fight" when your main war fleet for an ocean has been purposefully attacked and destroyed by a nation already engaged in aggressive expansionist moves.

It was just a stroke of military genius for FDR and his cabinet to keep us out of WW2 until the very moment it was needed. We got to make money, while preserving our blood and treasure. The rest of the world can bleed themselves off while we come out ahead. Then the chips fell how they did after.

In another video about how much did the Nazi's know about the attack on Pearl Harbor went into detail about the US and their foreign relations at the time. The US expected an attack to come that would force their hand, but they wanted to hold off entry as long as possible. In the background, there were efforts to stockpile supplies in readiness and prepare. The Japanese were completely surprised when America was mobilized as quick as they were because they expected it would take years instead of months.
@ComotoseOnAnime
@ComotoseOnAnime 10 месяцев назад
@@TheSeptemberSapphire And even then, one of the Japanese generals, I forget their names offhand, was against attacking Pearl Harbor at all, because they had been to the US previously for diplomatic matters and *knew* about the US's economic and industrial might if given a reason to awaken and be let off the chain. Pearl Harbor was that reason. Basically they knew that fucking around would equal finding out and they were right.

After I heard kip say that he wouldn't do well in war because of all the rules. My Drill Sergeants in basic told my platoon about a group of Marines that held an ambush against some group(I can't remember who they were) and let a guy bleed to death. In the rules of war, you are allowed to kill anyone in the final sweep of an ambush, but if you miss them, you have to treat them. These Marines "thought" about how to treat him and took so long that he died of blood loss. Moral of the story, if you know how to work the system, you can break it without technically breaking it.

My grandfather was in Korea. He screwed around in high school and got himself drafted, then screwed around in boot camp, (he got an “athletic excuse” to skip certain boot camp activities, and it turned out the “athletic sport” he was involved in was ping pong) and as a result, was put in an infantry unit slated for the front lines of Korea. On the boat he realized he’s made a grave mistake and that he needed to transfer to a different unit. He had a feeling in the pit of his stomach that he was going to die. So he went to the CO of the other unit being transported on the ship, which were for a field hospital. He made a deal with them to work as an orderly at the field hospital, clean bedsheets, human waste, comfort the dying, all the stuff like that. As it turns out, this saved his life. His original infantry unit got utterly wiped out, every last one of them KIA when the Chinese attacked. I wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the CO of that medical unit.

I mean, it really depends on how you define 'happiness'. When you're having 'fun', it's usually a happy time, right? Not always but usually. The US Army (and most other branches in some way, shape, or form) have 'Mandatory Fun Day' (yes that's where the RU-vidr gets his name). This is supposed to be a day where the unit (usually battalion level) commander goes out and does something 'fun' with the soldiers. That 'fun' is usually a 12k run at a 6-minute mile pace. I'm not one to dictate what is 'fun' for everyone, but I can say that 'Mandatory Fun Day' for most people is not fun and almost no one is happy.

Way late to comment on this, but yes. The drill sergeants are capable of detecting happiness. That's actually how they decide who can become a drill sergeant, it's genetic.

25:00 And this is when Geneva steps in and says you can't be doing that. But remember, "It's not a war crime, the first time."

When people ask me if they should join i always tell them not if you like who u are, because you wont be that person anymore when you get out. Sometimes for better sometimes for worse.

My dad met him in nam, he was in the 173rd airborne green beret. He got into some some clandestine shit that ended up with him in jail for war crimes, for 11 days then some black suits showed up and he was released. There's stuff he did that will never be declassified, there's suff he in theory could still get arrested for if he divulged.

Ah, good ol' CIA Black Ops bullshit. Just another day in the shitshow that was the Vietnam War. There's so much black ink, the documents involved probably looked like a giant barcode.

Glasses are not necessarily a disqualification. I have bad eyes and was a sonar operator on the P3c Orion. Waviers are the best thing in the military.

Dude I got into the USAF needing glasses and undiagnosed depression and wool allergy. There isn't a very low bar to getting in. Knew a guy that had type 1 diabetes, had to keep 3 packs of peanut butter in his portfolio. Got through basic just fine.

And of course you can do that. The first time. Until it’s talked about. Remember, it’s a not a war crime the first time, and any war can be great if you try hard enough, and in the World Wars the Canadians are savage enough to be Marines.
