Type: American Signal Clarity (832? 1632? I don't know)
Signal: Alert (Tempest recording)
Location: EKU Commonwealth Lot, Richmond, Madison County, KY
Another day another CSEPP siren. Third and final acceptance? test of the brand new American Signal system. Picked this Clarity for several reasons, above all just to experience a new siren. I sat there expecting a soft wind up and instead was quite surprised with the Tempest recording. You can hear what I believe are the other Clarity sirens on campus (there are 4 total) winding up at the beginning, and what sounds like several actual Tempests in the distance if you listen very close at the end. In terms of volume this thing honestly held its own against what it's replacing, that being a WPS-2904.
But then there's the smoke. I didn't see it in person but upon reviewing the footage you can clearly see what looks to be grey-whitish smoke coming out of a horn (or horns) facing away from the camera and being blown in the wind. This appears to last pretty much the duration of the test and I imagine it cannot be good.
Anyways, quite the interesting test. Enjoy y'all!

Siren drivers can let off “smoke” (it’s usually just dust and other crap) when they are running for the first time This siren has probably been sitting in ASCs warehouse collecting dust for a while just waiting to be sold
@DJ2226
@DJ2226 11 месяцев назад
It's a Clarity 416. 4 horns per cell with a driver per horn for a total of 1600 watts. That's probably mist coming out of the horns. They are so stubby that rain water probably can make its way into the drivers and acumluate if the drivers don't have weep holes are they are mounted upside down to stop water from coming into the housing. If that's the case, when it starts running the vibrations break the water up into a mist that'll get sprayed out of the horns over time. Not too sure I like that so much, but considering that most of the 100 watt drivers that all of the companies use are designed to be used with a vehicular siren that'll take on water anyway it's probably not too big a deal.

Congrats on a new siren! Man, hopefully that smoke isn't much of an indication of anything major. but there were some parts in the test that sounded quite bad, it doesn't inspire too much confidence.

I knew EKU was going to have something different, but I sure wasn't expecting this! Let's just hope they'll last longer than any other Madison county system...

Given the fact this unit appears to be smoking (see the video description for more info), I don’t know how long this unit in particular will last. Only time will tell, but I’m sure it’s just a kink that’ll have to be worked out with the Clarity, as it’s still a product with hardly any installations. The T-128’s on the rest of the system should last a while though.
@tunneltrain96
@tunneltrain96 11 месяцев назад
@@stampycatfan01lol Yeah, considering that the previous systems, the 2900s, and the modulators before them, they only lasted about 10-15 years at the most. I think this system should last much longer.
@stampycatfan01lol
@stampycatfan01lol 11 месяцев назад
@@tunneltrain96 I want to say that before the 2900s was actually a system of EOWS sirens, but I could be wrong. With the 2900 series still being made and maintained by Whelen, though, I could see some of those going to other towns as a relatively modern secondhand unit that’s still able to be maintained fairly easily. Whether that’ll actually happen or not is something I don’t know though.
@tunneltrain96
@tunneltrain96 11 месяцев назад
@@stampycatfan01lol Yeah, letting other towns use them would be a good idea. As for the system, the whelen system came in around 2007-2008. Before that there were modulators (all 5020s). I think the EOWSs did come before that, but ofc the only ones left are on Bluegrass Depot grounds, so it's hard to confirm.

Unlike many others who are under the impression that this is normal, I am the complete opposite. It should not have blown anything out of it for that long if it was dust or water. Given how it sounds worse and worse as the test goes on, I am 100% under the impression that this siren is killing itself.
@DJ2226
@DJ2226 10 месяцев назад
The reason why it sounds so bad over time is because the recording itself is garbage and gets pretty garbled towards the end. The E-Class sirens in Oak Lawn, IL use the exact same recording. I compared the two and everything from the pitch to the little pop at 1:02, probably where they spliced the recording, lineup with the one Noie recorded a while back. The crackling sounds appear to be part of the recording and come through much more on those horns than with these. While I don't have any faith in the longevity of the drivers since they are being pushed with the tones they are using, it apparently hasn't done enough damage to their system to force them back to stock alert tone. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pNs9mscZQwo.html I don't know what the folks at ASC were thinking when they did this. It's like they used an old recording they had laying around on a cassette tape from the 90s or something. It doesn't sound quite as bad as Oak Lawn's, but I guess that's because the little dinky horns don't have as low of a frequency response as the DKTec ones. What bothers me about this is they could have use regular alert tone and just move the wires on the controller to the low side if they wanted them to sound like the Whelens. It's like when the FS dealerships put recordings on the UV for custom Modulator installations. Why do that when you have a whole tone generator at your disposal?

If a driver did 'smoke', it would probably be detected by the amplifier, and it could then be serviced. This speaker is not meant to be most efficient in the low frequency range where they are operating it with this Tempest siren recording, but it should be able to handle full power in this range even if the SPL level is lower than expected. These horns are less efficient with siren frequencies and more efficient with speech intelligibility; I have built a couple of speakers that use compression drivers in the mid and high range to reproduce speech, and they are most efficient around 1kHz. If a lower frequency is needed, use a heterodyne of two frequencies in the efficient range of the speaker, such as 1200 and 1600 Hz, to produce a 400 Hz heterodyne. Another benefit is that the RMS audio power is reduced so less heat is generated in the drivers when operating with superimposed dual tones.

I find it hard to believe this has anything on a WPS2904. Not saying these are necessarily bad, but the WPS2900 series of sirens are easily one of, if not the BEST sirens currently on the market.

Those tiny horns are designed for midrange-tweeter use in the upper hundreds-1000s hz range. They are in no way ideal for a lower tone siren like this.
@Sipex6484
@Sipex6484 11 месяцев назад
@bluegrasssirens1938 whether or not I've worked on one is of zero relevance. I'm talking about the performance, not the maintenance. Something tells me working on a whelen head is a tad easier than this thing, anyways. I also know plenty of people who have heard these in person, and seen plenty more distance recordings over video. The performance of these sirens is definitely something to write home about.

@Acoustic_Theory
@Acoustic_Theory 11 месяцев назад
The head can easily be replaced by an E-Class head if they need to supply a replacement. There should be monitoring of the state of the speaker drivers by the amplifier module (measuring voltage, current) that could report if a problem exists with a speaker.

@@Acoustic_Theory Very true. Not saying ASC is bad in any way (in fact they’re pretty good themselves from what I’ve heard), but I have my doubts about this installation in particular. I should note that this is probably one of the very first Clarity installs out there, so there will obviously be some issues they’ll work out over time, whether it’s with the product itself or just this one installation. Driver monitoring definitely sounds like a good idea to implement for sure if it isn’t implemented already.

Why does this look like a bunch of piezo horns mounted inside an enclosure? Seems like it wouldn't be loud at all. Those horns look small.........
@DJ2226
@DJ2226 11 месяцев назад
They are using JBL HM17-25 horns, or at least horns similar to what they produce. They are super tiny, but they do accept standard 1-3/8". They are going to take a huge hit in SPL, but the tradeoff is straight horns will give much better clarity, hence the name. The drivers are most likely the same DKTec DKU-100Ns the I-Force and E-Class use. Hoermann and a bunch of European manufacturers use the same drivers and drive them at 125 - 150 watts, so they seem to be pretty stout.
