Everyone knows Benfica is one of Portugal's biggest, most successful football clubs. So as an American soccer fan traveling in Lisbon, I could NOT miss out on their Primeira Liga match vs Santa Clara. Little did I know I would be entering a world bathed in red, complete with a soaring eagle, hypnotic light show, striking stadium architecture, and a 5 GOAL THRILLER of a game!
The Estadio da Luz (Stadium of Light) has been one of Europe's most iconic stadiums and I've wanted to visit ever since I watched EURO 2004, which was hosted in Portugal. Between the beautiful stadium, intensely passionate fans, and high quality footballers on the pitch, this was a night to remember!
Thank you to Claudio, Goncalo, and Rodrigo for welcoming me and making me feel comfortable! Thank you to whoever sold my ticket for 23 euros (3 rows from the field!!!), and thank you to Angel DiMaria for a beautiful golazo that I will always cherish.
