Hi you eanted to know if every Slovak letter have its own pronunciation and yes. We have like normal a but also have á wich is just longer a, then we have ä wich is kind of hard to say ,you have to say it in very deep voic. Here is Slovak alphabet: aáäbcčdďeéfgh(ch)-this is also letter, iíjklĺľmnňoóôpqrsštťuúvwxyýzž Love your content and I hope that you will see this comment. In our alphabet there is a think called "dĺžeň" and "mäkčeň" (ä is pronounced like e) the "dĺžeň" is used on some letters to pronounce the letter in a long tone. And the "mäkčeň" is used to read the letter softly. And there is also ô letter which is pronounced like u-o in the same time. Thats all :D

Actually Slovak and Czech languages are so simillar that Slovaks can actually come to study at Czech universities without having to study Czech and they go to lessons in Czech, but do their essays, homework or tests in Slovak. Like 1/3 of my classmates are Slovak.

Most of those letters have English equivalent. But where English needs multiple symbols to write down a sound, we use just one. That's why there are so many of them. For example you could write the word ship as šip, cheese as čís or moose as mús.

The letters, well its complicated for foreigners. Basically there are letters as ď, ť, ň ,ľ, š, ž, č. They are just d, t, n, l, s, z and c with a "Mäkčeň" The word comes from mäkké wich is Soft in English. So you pronounce it a little bit softer than the letters without the "Mäkčeň". But sometimes you don't need to write the Mäkčeň. When there comes e or i after d, t, n and l it is automatically pronounced softer. Then there are á, ó, ú, é, ý, í, ĺ, ŕ. The mark over them is called "Dĺžeň" wich comes from the word dlhý = long in English. So you need to say it longer in the word. Ä is pronounced like ae. Then there is ô. It is pronounced like uo. The other letters don't have a mark. Hockey: Yeah, we used to be very good. As Czekoslovakia we were good, but after the split the Czechs got to the A category, which is the best and left us, the Slovaks drop to the lowest category C. Then we fought to the A category in only a few years and even won some medals. But after that we only have really bad luck. But this year we came at least to the quarterfinals after like 8 years.

I would add that 3 letters consist of 2 characters/symbols, but they are actually one alphabet letter. Those are "dz, dž, ch". But I do not really dare to explain the pronunciation of dz or dž. "Ch" is pronounced the same as "j" in the Spanish word "Jueves" I would say.

Hi, thanks for your videos. I watch you from Slovakia, where I live, and what you were asking at 1:35 : That marks above characters sometimes radically change meaning of word, e.g. myš = mouse vs. mys = cape, súd = trial or court vs. sud = barrel. It is also able to listen the difference. That ' symbol twices duration of pronouncing that character and is called dĺžeň ("longer"?! .. dĺžka means length) Next we have ˇ symbol, that is prononced mäkčeň ("softer"?! .. mäkký is soft), so it create softer version of character. You can imagine that in some english words,e.g. in word version we would use character š (veršn), ž in word garage (garáž), or č in word furniture (furničr). Next we have two dots above "a" (ä), which is called "a with two dots" or "wide a". It is spelled like deeper version of "a" or something like "ae" really fast :) Above "o" you can find ^ (ô), symbolizing fast spelled "uo" . In eglish is word vowel, where it can be found (ôvl). Hope it was understable and helps you somewhat :) Have a nice day.

You know the thing is, Easter is not exaggerated, at least not in the old-time villages. In cities it's like a symbolic wham and a bit of parfeum, but in the vilige where I live, it was more intense. The girls got whipped pretty hard (sometimes before, sometimes after water)... usually my neighbors wake their women on easter that they dump a bucket of really cold water over them still sleeping, but we had a couple of times, where they just took the whole bed (as silently as possible) and just dumped the sleeping girl/woman directly into the river :D:D:D .... aaaaand then she got whipped :D

All vowels have equivalents with marks , these letters are pronounced differently. Some of consonants also have marks , the mark usually softens the pronunciation. It’s mainly because basically every letter equals to different sound and you don’t basically have to know the world to know how to pronounce it . There are some exceptions, for example when there are more consonants together in the word (vt, dc,sb, etc)

Well, the 1968 event was not a part of WW2 but 23 years later xd It was when Czechoslovakia was in a few months stage of a Prague spring during which we were having a sort of "free" policy and were adopting some things from Western Europe which the Soviet Union did not like and with the pact of Eastern block countries "helping each other in time of need" they stormed in August 1968 into Czechoslovakia with tanks and occupied us because we were being kind of free and Soviets were scared that we would separate from the Eastern block. Just a little lesson of history of Czechoslovakia here xd hope I get that right

Okay, so on Easter the whipping is like... lightly tapping and the water is usually sprayed in a perfume bottle (unless you're rather.... pationate) and while men do get money, more common is chocolate, candy, snacks or other food pieces, sometimes stuff like alcohol for adults. Men and sons walk around their village if it's small enough or neigbourhood if in a city, visiting woman who are often already expecting it. So like Halloween but you always trick and you always get the treat, no "or" needed. Also, like many other countries, Jesus is the person delivering gifts at Christmas, not Santa Claus, though he gets his own holiday, December 6th, the Saint Nicholas day, which is when the boots and socks are stocked with goodies, though mostly candies and fruit, not a lot of toys, oh and this is when "naughty" kids gets coal instead of candy, which means they still get gifts on Christmas, which are better than Saint Nick's gifts most of the time anyway.

So.. slovak alphabet: When you have " ˇ " above the letter it makes the latter "softer". Per say C (normaly read like TS in tsar) cahnges into " Č " (read like CZ in czech or CH in check)- This thingy can be above letters: Ť Ž Š Ď Ľ Ň Č When you have " ´ " above the letter it makes the letter longer. Its easier to explain in this way: imagine the word "need". now make the middle part shorter. that would be wroten as "Nid" in slovakia. To make the middle part longer you just write it as "níd". very simple. ´ can be above letters é í á ó ú ý (and maybe more but i cant remember lol) Then we have two special ones. there is ä and ô. ä makes somewhat of a "Ugh" sound ( slovake.eu/en/learning/grammar/pronunciation/a ) and ô is basicaly " UO " ( forvo.com/word/ô/ )

Another comment to our language - back in the day when “the guy” defined our language he made a rule “write it as you hear it”. And that’s quite useful. You said that writing is intimidating and you can’t probably read it. But in fact, I can create completly new unmeaningful word and every Slovak will read it the same. Or I can tell a new word and all Slovak will write it more or less the same. And also we do not need to learn how to spell, as most words are read the same as a whole word and as each leter individually. For exaple “look”. You need to spell L-O-O-K. We’d write sound of that word as “lúk”. That’s 3 separated sounds when you say that word - short “L”, long “uuu” and short “K”. And “soup” has similar sound but with much shorter “u” in the middle and we would write as “sup”. So “u” is short as in “soup” and “ú” is long as in “look”. But it’s the same sound, same position of toungue and mouth, it’s just shorter or longer. Therefore we write it as the same “u” but if it’s longer we add that comma above what we actually call something like “longerer” - make sense - right? And same is short “o” in “lot” vs long “ó” in “more”. Short “a” in “bat” and long “á” in “bath”. Short “i” in “sit” and long “í” in “seed”. See? Actually easier to read. You have “bat” and “bath” which looks almost the same but you made different sound when you read it. We would write it as “bat” and “báf”. Now try to say “bat” and “bath” and look on our writing “bat” and “báf”. See how we write it exactly by the sound of it (aka “as we hear it”)?

Btw, t,l,n,d,s,z do with maybe some others etc. Those are the same letters f.e. t as ť, t is pronounced as teh (in ur case tea, but we say its teh well pronounce longer emphasis on e), and the other one as tje, or tye,(not precise, but somewhat accurate), sounds different, so its a different letter probably thats the reasoning behind it. I think those are the same letters but with a little something extra, but i guess its cool to have the longest alphabet in Europe :). Also pppeter did do a video about USA, like u know those as France, Czechia, Slovakia, Germany and so on. Quite funny. I hope ull react :).

These kind of disputes becouse of buildings are on regular basis in every "post-monarchical" country. And the part with the other side of Bratislava, yeah it was a part of Germany during 2. world war, but thats all. After that its a regular part of Slovakia with no dispute at all, actually there is a lot of Slovaks in these areas of Hungary and Austria couse they work in Bratislava but can't afford to buy a house there.
