Dave mentioned putting all the adverts together and making them longer. No one is going to sit around and watch the adverts that way. They'll either change the channel or go to the kitchen. Believe me, I'd rather not have my show interrupted every 10 minutes but that's just how it is.

@@imajhawk6146 So, true. Having grown up before the age of DVR's and online streaming, this is what I was used to. Now I prefer streaming or using the DVR to skip the ads. I get what they are saying but I don't think they know the effect of what they're asking. They are inadvertently asking for free service (broadcast) from a private entity without any way for the private entity to re-coop the cost of providing that free services. As someone who's worked at liquor stores in Texas... We had undercover people who were obviously of age come in all the time for alcohol and cigs. If you didnt ID them, I think it was 3 times, you'd be fired. However, if you did you'd get $20. Then there was times when they'd have undercover kids come in and try the same, in those cases you could go to jail.

One other thing that Brits find weird: Americans put ice in soda, tea, and water. My dad is from the southern US and ordered an iced tea when he was in London. The waiter took down the order carefully, and then went to the bar, and started up the ice grinder lol. There are undercover agents that pop into shops to see if the employees are checking ID. If the clerk is under 18 they have to defer to an older employee to actually sell the cigarettes or alcohol. My daughter was 16 working at a deli when she deferred to an adult employee to complete a cigarette sale. The customer turned out to be an agent. Had she actually sold him the cigarettes, the shop would have been fined.

They don't place the adverts for convenience to the viewer, they place them where they think it'll make you sit through them. If you just did it between shows or in huge blocks, people would just turn it off, or go do other stuff while they are running. The idea is for you to sit through them so you won't miss when the show comes back on. But it's all free programming, so if they don't pay for them with adverts, then you'd pay with a subscription, which is why Netflix doesn't have them.
@otis299
@otis299 3 года назад
And that's why I use my DVR! A small inconvenience for free programming. I think in the UK, there's a TV license one has to by for about $150-200 per year if your TV can receive over-the-air broadcasting. From what I have heard, they have people who in the US would be the equivalent to the lowest form of used car salesmen go and knock on doors trying to bully people with threats if they don't either buy a license or let them in the home to check out the house for illegal TV's hooked up to an antenna.

The TV advert thing is a psychology trick. If they put adverts between programmes then viewers are more likely to switch channels. Instead they put the advert just before the end, then show the end credit, often with some end credit content, then immediately start the next programme in the hope that if the viewer sees a couple of minutes of content of the next show they are more likely to not switch channel during the next ad break.

The minimum "garden" (lot) size in my area (NE of Washington DC) is 2 acres. Every home has a private well and septic system and it takes 2 acres to make sure that you have enough distance between them plus space for at least 2 replacement septic fields. Since lots start at around $250,000 usd, new homes are pretty big. Not a lot is being built under 4,000 square feet above grade + basement and minimum 3 car garage.

Where I live in Arkansas the law is that you must check ID if they appear under 40 for alcohol or tobacco. Most stores however make their own policy to check EVERYONE regardless of their perceived age. In my experience it's the 35-45 crowd that gets angry about this and not the 60+ folks lol. EDIT: Oh, also forgot to mention with the above law, that is a federal law (ATF) and if someone gets caught not carding someone they should (which happens all the time, because the cops often hire kids to go in and try to buy tobacco when they are underage to entrap them) the cashier that sold the items get a fine as well as the business. It happened to a good friend of mine. He carded someone, but didn't properly read their birth date so sold it anyway, and then a cop came in and handed him the ticket. He was fired per company policy and received a fine.

Television is a regulated industry, but still a privately owned or corporate interest. So all of their revenue comes from advertising rather than being run by a division of the government. Some places, mostly smaller privately owned businesses, will only take cash. I suspect that they only report a small portion of their sales to the IRS. Also, the huge portions that Europeans complain about are mostly served at chain restaurants. We don't pay for TV licenses in America so the sponsors stuff the shows on broadcast TV full of ads. This is because if some minor were to get their hands on it and something were to happen to them in their inebriated state, the cashier who sold them the alchohol can be legally responsible for what happened to them and can face legal ramifications (fines or even jail time). You just don't take that risk, no matter how angry a customer might get

If you go to Mississippi, you can probably find a 15 thousand plus Sq foot mansion with 100 plus acres of land for maybe 10 million or so (give or take a few numbers). But if you take that same 10 million to LA, it'll just be the house, and the house won't even be as big, because EVERYONE is trying to movie to LA and the property taxes are higher.

In America, if you look younger than DEAD, showing ID is required to purchase cigarettes or alcohol. The sad thing is, they get pretty crazy about enforcement in some areas. A friend of mine lost her job because she sold a pack of cigarettes to a guy she said was clearly in his sixties. Just turns out, he also was an ATF officer. In order to avoid the huge fine, the manager had to fire her. Lucky for her, he owned another shop and simply hired her to work in that one.

They probably do this in England too, but they have actual “sting” operations, where the police pay an underage kid to go to the gas station or a bar to try to buy smokes or alcohol. The businesses can lose their license to sell these things if they fail. It’s quite common too, when I was working at the local bar for 6 months they conducted 4 stings. On the bright side you get a bonus of around $100 if you pass.

With cigs a lot of places are required to put your birth date into the register or swipe your driver's license before it'll let the sale go through. The general rule when that isn't required is anyone looking younger than 40 has to be ID'd

One of the last comments tho is right. European roads and towns are smaller due to them being hundreds of years old when there were no cars. And while newer towns and cities here in the US are big to accommodate transportation specifically, some of the USs oldest cities such as Boston and such still have those super small streets and narrow alleys.

My Dad was shocked he was carded at 72 years old. Some stores are very strict and will ask everyone. Some places, like Walmart in California, if someone looks older than 45 then you don't have to ask. But at bars, EVERYONE needs ID otherwise the establishment can lose their license. It wasn't that bad 30 years ago. You could just bring a note from a parent for store purchases of cigarettes.

Many cash registers here will not allow the transaction for tobacco or alcohol to go through unless they scan your ID. The tills just block the transaction until your ID can be scanned into them. It's out of the cashier's hands.

I know that in California, it's NOT just that you look your age(or not) you MUST have the license physically on you!! So yeah it doesn't matter how old you LOOK, it must be in your possession when you are purchasing alcohol. As a bartender that's what I tell people, who obviously look old enough to drink.

Yeah now that I'm older I still have to show my idea when buying beer, but the employee just takes a glance at the ID and doesn't actually check it seems like. Either way, when I have family come in from different countries I always have to remind them to make sure they have their ID's when we go out.

Not sure if it has changed, but the law used to be that you have to ID anyone who looks under 40 years for cigarettes and alcohol, but some companies have their own store policy that require everyone to be ID'd ...even if they're obviously 70-80+

I'm 60 years old and all the shops know me and know I'm a Grandmother and I still have to show my ID. It's just the way it is. My 84 year old Dad has to show his as well. It has zero to do with your age. They have to scan the license or passport before the register will let you purchase alcohol or tobacco this is extremely common in grocery stores, gas stations and liquor shops.
@margaretsy1855
@margaretsy1855 3 года назад
And yes, many bars have to scan your ID as well so it isn't just how old you look but how the registers are set up. For example, you go to a grocery store and are checking out and the register hita the fact you are buying beer, the register stops and immediately asks for your ID which needs the cashier to input your Birth Data or scan your information. Always carry your ID or Passport in the US.

Pancakes with fried chicken? No, the combination is chicken and waffles, and it's not for breakfast. Generally, there's no legal requirement to demand ID of absolutely anyone buying alcohol or tobacco. They're supposed to card customers who look like they might be underage. The places that card everyone have probably been caught selling to underage customers. A second infraction could cost them their liquor license or get them a big fine. So they tell their employees to card absolutely everyone, no matter how old they look. If they put ads only between TV shows, people wouldn't sit through them at all. They'd figure out pretty quickly to get up and do something else during the ads. By putting ads in the middle of shows, it discourages people from wandering off or changing the channel. Some (most?) European countries avoid this problem by paying for TV with taxes instead of ads. The use of DVRs has made it possible for people to skip over ads in recorded programs pretty quickly. The U.S. has the most Christians of any nation, but it doesn't have the highest proportion of Christians. Several European countries have a higher proportion than the U.S., including Romania, Poland, Greece, Croatia, Ireland, Italy, Monaco, Ukraine, Lithuania, Denmark, Montenegro, Norway, Luxembourg, Latvia, Finland, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Belgium. What's different about the U.S. is how open so many people are about their religion, and especially the mixing of religion into politics.

Asking for ID (at least in Canada) is required of the person looks 25 or younger (legal age is 19 but people can look older than what they are so we ID people that look under 25) Long story short- it’s not required to ID every customer. If you have a customer who’s clearly in their 70’s, then they wouldn’t be asked for ID

On the ID thing, here in Oklahoma at least, if the customer looks younger than 40, they will usually ask for your ID. I worked as a clerk at a convenience store, and that was our general rule. Now, if someone comes in, and you can tell that he or she is over 40, you sell them the beer or cigarettes. But if that person still looks fresh-faced, still full of hopes and dreams, yeah, they're getting carded.

Plenty of Americans don't have perfect teeth. In fact, plenty of Americans are missing teeth. And I am aware that some European countries are almost cashless- Sweden for instance uses cards and cash apps almost exclusively so they definitely wouldn't find the widespread use of credit and debit cards at all weird, though I have never been anywhere that didn't accept cash so I really don't know what that one is all about.

In my state the law is that you have to ask if they look 40 or younger. Obviously it's only usually applied to new people that look young and not that whole age range but yeah, as other people have said, penalties are VERY harsh and businesses could lose their liquor/alcohol license. For many stores like gas stations and liquor stores this would seriously damage the business, they might even have to close, at least temporarily.

Great channel, guys! A lot of my European friends also complained about the sales tax not being included in the price. There is a reason for that, though: it keeps taxes low. If you don't see the tax applied, you tend to ignore small increases in tax or assume the increase in cost is due to a non-tax reason. When tax increases are being considered by our legislatures, people tend to take issue and call their delegate/representative, etc. Not saying it's better or worse. On a side note, it is estimated that up to 30% of the retail price of most goods in the US is due to our corporate and other taxes (and the cost of compliance...or avoidance) aimed at companies that manufacture, transport, or sell each products (on profits of the raw material folks, the manufacturer, the trucker, the retail store). Most taxes are passed down to the consumer. Just food for thought if our admittedly annoying sales tax policy seemed bafflingly illogical.
@Zhiperser
@Zhiperser 3 года назад
I don't know if it keeps it lower but it's a different system. Because your sales tax rate can vary in so many ways there's no way for a national or regional company to do advertising or to list prices uniformly. The taxes can vary not just state to state, but in a county, and in a major city.
@otis299
@otis299 3 года назад
@@Zhiperser I love these types of videos for the interesting comments about different systems. I totally hear what you're saying, but it is a factor in keeping taxes lower than they would otherwise be if people in that locality weren't slapped in the face with it every time they purchase a latte, lamp, lawn mower, new US flags, bullets, etc. If they were incorporated into the price, the final price would still vary region to region, state to state, county to county. Most states exempt non-profit organizations and have a process to demonstrate their exempt status with a retailer. With regard to national companies, local sales taxes are applied to the sale to where the item is shipped. For example, with Amazon, persons in Montana and Florida pay the same retail price but respective Montana and Florida taxes will be applied when they go to the checkout screen. Ironically and to your point, this is not the case with gasoline (petrol) which is taxed separately and is included in the advertised price (because why be consistent?) where where my local gas station in Virginia is selling gas at $2.85/USgal (£0.58/L) and in California the average price is $4.22/USgal (£0.85/L). Here, I think, what keeps the price down is that people seem to keep track of the price of gas better than their own birthday. Plus it's advertised on the roadside. Regardless both systems hide other taxes into the price regardless (e.g, profit taxes on producers, transporters, retailers, overhead taxes on property, etc.).
