that tuna looks really good, just like home canned tuna. I have been spoiled my whole life, my Aunt lives on the Oregon Coast. she would go down to the docks and buy whole Tunas off the boats and then we would process and can the tuna fresh at her house, so I had only ever had fresh home canned tuna as a kid. The first time I had store bought tuna was when I was a adult and my GF at the time made us tuna fish sandwiches. I thought she used cat food at first but it was just bought tuna, she did not like the fresh tuna because she grew up eating the store bought. it was pretty funny.

This video makes me happy. You have talked about your health issues and your weight and health journey, and I am right here with you. I've finally just accepted that being healthy means I have to spend more on food, and know where my food comes from and stop buying the cheapest things. Quality tuna on a portabella mushroom to skip the carbs? Fantastic! I hope you are healthy and happy. Thanks for inspiring me to eat better!

Glad you spoke out about buying US made. We run a homestead and raise our own free range chickens/pigs/goats to produce wggs/chicken meat/pork/goat milk. We care for our livestock, give them great lives, and know what goes into our food products!

Wish I could afford to buy tuna this way but, unfortunately l can't. I live on a fixed income and am barely scraping by right now just by the skin of my teeth. I have to buy only what I can afford. Kudos to those who can do this but I'm not in that income bracket. Peace 🕊️

That American tuna sounds good. I wish I could afford it right now. I usually buy the least expensive tuna available that doesn’t include soy/vegetable broth in its ingredients.

our family has been making Tuna melts for decades. I'm 70 now, Mom used to make them on Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, adding American cheese on top and tomato for those of us who liked tomatoes,(not me) LOL. Now when I make them for myself most of the time I'll put them on an english muffin. Mmmm, love them. I only make my tuna with mayo and it comes out great. I may try a baguette next time but as far as shrooms.....I don't eat fungus. :( Thanks for the video.

Buying American made is a luxury. Higher wages mean higher prices. Buy local when you can, and when it makes sense. The prices on these cans do not make sense for your average working stiff, and giving money to a state across the country because patriotism or whatever is not going to improve my community.

Thailand tuna is a decent option for the cost, and their QC is reasonable. It's obviously not going to be to the same level of quality of the US sourced Tuna. But Thailand at least isn't an adversary of the US nor attempting to undermine it at every turn.

Laws for packaging and traceability are different by country. Many tuna products (even the store brand) in Canada have tracking numbers on them. It also matters what type of tuna you want as well. I usually eat light tuna, which is labeled by it's species (Skipjack) in the cans that I buy. You don't always have to pay an arm and a leg for a fish if the government is helping to protect their people.

Another American tuna brand is Polar. They are a bit more expensive, but you can buy their cans online, and it's not that much more money. And it is SOLID TUNA - not bits of tuna.

I agree like I said, in the video it is pricey! I believe if you buy it by the 12 pack or so it's cheaper but not very much. Just think of it as though you're helping one of your neighbors feed their families when you can.

I know that may sound strange, but it actually works out very well., using with crab meat though, and I do use Parmesan and bread Crumbs in that recipe.. Definitely going to try yours. I make my tuna melts like this - I toast the sliced white bread in the toaster , mix the tuna with mayonnaise and bell pepper and onions, the put it on the toast add sharp cheddar cheese on top , put in oven until cheese is good and melted on 400° keep and eye on it because every oven is different. Absolutely a comfort food for me!!!❤❤❤

Makes me miss my grandmothers home canned tuna. She lived on the coast in Oregon and had made friends with a lot of the fishing boat crews that came in and out of their area so she got the freshest tuna at a pretty killer price. Nothing quite like tuna canned that fresh. Give me some good tuna, mixed with mayo, a little dijon mustard, garlic and onion powder along with some diced bread and butter pickles and some taragon and dill. Salt and pepper to taste and then build a melt exactly like you did on the garlic bread... To die for!

Your thoughts about tuna melts are good, and I welcome them. Sometimes I can get line-caught, smoked local and canned tuna... and sometimes it's just "chicken" of the sea, for free, from the local food bank. When it's the free tuna, I like to throw in an anchovy filet or two to increase the fishy-ness. But regardless, I try not to eat these fish too often because of the worries about the mercury and other accumulations in the larger fishes. Give me a can of sardines in olive oil on a bed of rice and I will be happy.

I want to be clear that I absolutely love this idea, and loved hearing about the option and the quality ~ and that my 'rant' is directed at those charging these prices. I'll admit that catching individual tuna one at a time is far more labor intensive than turning piggies out on pasture, but I can't afford to buy these folks a new boat just to eat tuna salad. Part of the problem for people who genuinely want to buy Made-in-America products, as well as grass fed meat and dairy items is the sheer cost. And, to clarify (before any of those who are raising/selling to the public chime in), I have raised my own pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and goats for meat. I have raised them with and without commercial feeds and/or supplements. I can absolutely guarantee that animals who eat what God intended for them to eat taste much better, and that I look and feel healthier when I limit myself to those options. The same applies to all produce, dairy products, and ANYthing made with wheat when Einkorn/ancient grains not contaminated with hybrid strains is used. $101.28 for twelve 6 ounce cans of tuna ~ no salt added! With so many people struggling to afford a 4-pack of Great value tuna for $3.52 (5 ounce cans), made-in-America sounds more like a clarion call for the top 1% wealthy only. What I can also state, with no bs at all, is that even figuring in MY time and labor, pasture seeds, produce seeds, and water, my grass fed meat never once came out to more than $3.78 per pound. Can't speak about beef since I have no personal experience with that. I also need to clarify that we processed our own animals. All of that being said and using pork as my example since that was the highest cost (pretty sad that pigs cost more than goats to pasture feed lol) at $3.78 per pound, and the average national price per pound of grass fed pork is $12.76 (per USDA) PLUS shipping, y'all need to get cheaper butchers. Adding insult to injury is the fact that bones cost extra. Lard fat costs extra. Most times special cuts or 'all ground' costs extra. We butchered at around 225 pounds hot weight. We averaged 150 pounds of meat, enough fat to make 22-30 pints of lard, plus bones and extra scraps for sausage. We make our own sausage, our own brats, our own bacon, and render our own lard. The closest grass fed farm to me charges $9.00/pound for sausage, brats, etc. $14.+ /pound for roasts and butts. Lard is $10/pound. I did that one year. Now (since we can't raise pigs at our current property ~ just chickens, ducks, and rabbits), we purchase a feeder and let a family member raise it at their place 3 miles down the road and help them butcher/chip in for water. Just comparing the costs for sausage meat the comparison is ours/150 pounds + lard/$567 total (and for honest comparison, commercial or local feed mill mix drops that to about $480 at today's feed costs). ~ to ~ made-in-America/150 pounds/$1350 + $100 lard/$1450 + $150 - $400 in shipping costs. It doesn't matter what the quality difference is when you have $300 a month (or less) to feed a family of 4. For us, one a disabled/retired income, in our 60s, raising/growing our own vegetables, meat, eggs, and a bit of dairy, then cooking from scratch is the only 'made-in-America' that is going to be on our tables. When I get too old and too disabled to process all this myself, I'll likely die of starvation within 6 weeks.

Larry, thank you for sticking up for American business. I buy St Jude’s Tuna which is a local (Seattle/Bellevue) fishing company. By ordering online the cans are about $8.00 each. Both American tuna and St Jude’s are so different from the mass produced glop in the supermarket. The prices are high so I don’t buy too much, but the quality difference is well worth the cost if you can swing it. I see no reason to supply Vietnam, China, Thailand, or any other third world rathole with my hard earned money.

Yes, especially once you let it rest in the fridge for half an hour or so. If you have ever had a McDonald's hamburger cheeseburger those onions are dehydrate onions that were rehydrated. If you ever want to make them at home, simply put a couple tablespoons of the dehydrated onions into a small bowl with some hot water and let them set for a few minutes and there you have it McDonald's onions.
