He's not a play maker , he is a left back/wing back (left sided) , which is usually a defence position but he plays it in a very attacking way, So you might say he is an Attacking wing or full back. His job is to some degree, run down the left hand side and provide crosses and pass , but the main job of a left back is usually to track opposition attackers and tackle them, , full/wing backs are usually very fast, can tackle and can cross You get a lot of wing players who are good tacklers playing as wing backs, Marcelo was probably one of those so he probably has equal defensive and attacking duties, but focuses himself more on attack. He is closer to a play maker than many wing/full backs usually are, but I would not say he is a playmaker. Playmakers in football tend to have a loose defensive position so are usually wingers or second strikers/forwards/attacking midfielders. Not always but they are rarely defenders because they usually have to get back in position more than attackers, Full backs/Wing backs ARE defenders, but they are probably the most attacking positions in the defence, and can be played with a focus more on attack, defence or a mix Attack focused: see Marcelo, Andy Robertson, Roberto Carlos Defence focused see: Wan Bassaka, Lahm, Gary Neville Mixed: Cafu, Ashley Cole as eamples
