"Yardies" is a word meaning criminal gangs of Jamaican origin in Britain. "Prozzie", short for prostitute. Taggart is a crime drama, not sure what the US equivalent would be, but the kind of cop show enjoyed by older people. A lot of non US programs might be labelled as "too hard" since I have noticed any kind of slight accent seem to need sub-titles in the US, and apparently everyone in the US hates sub-titles. Plus there is a lot of slang. As well as being "jel", you can be "well jel". 😁

The most obvious difference for me between British and US comedies is that in US comedies, there is a build up to an obvious punchline and then a pause where the actors wait for the laughter, then on to the next build up. British comedies just come at you relentlessly and leave you no time to gather your thoughts; you have to keep up. I'm sure there are counter examples on both sides but that's the general trend in my opinion

Yeah but at least in America you can’t get arrested for offending somebody with a joke. I saw a guy in the UK get dragged off in handcuffs because he shared a joke on Facebook that offended ONE trans person. You should get off your high horse.

Curb is great. Never got on with Seinfeld but other US comedies I like are Married With Children, Cheers, Frasier, King of Queens, Everyone Loves Raymond, Big Bang Theory, Malcom in the Middle and the possibly the cleverest and most underrated American Sitcom, The Middle. I hear It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is great but I haven'y got round to it yet.

We just like to have a laugh, mate. And the more original, shocking and direct, the better! We are all busy people and don't get time to watch everything that's on tv, but you, KB, an American, have shown me things that I was aware existed, but just didn't get round to watching. This episode does bring up an interesting point. Mark wakes up to Natalie riding him, and it's funny. But imagine the uproar it would've caused if Mark had started having sex with Natalie while she was asleep. Both would be non-consentual acts and yet one is deemed more acceptable than the other.

Things have moved on a bit since this episode was made. Trust me, as someone involved in the CPS, female-on male sexual assault is treated just as seriously as the more common male-on-female. It's not in any way regarded as a joke.

I don't think it would be as traumatising or life changing for most men as it is for women. Most men are stronger than most women, regardless of size differences. Mark could have thrown her off without much trouble. Not saying it's right, but most men would soldier on I think.

The only access to British television I had in the 80’s and 90’s was through my local PBS station. Are You Being Served, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Chef, Mr. Bean, The Brittas Empire, and of course Doctor Who. Thank god I was able to see those gems.

it's not about understanding, it's that the first few episodes are rough sketches, the writers aren't even sure of the characters. Example - in one of the first season episodes, Mark is made fun of for liking peter gabriel..but really the characterisation of mark the show settles on is far more uncool than that, as shown in a much later season when he can't name a band other than the beatles

I'm a Brit and even I understand basic things like trigger discipline and assuming that a gun is always loaded so your frustration with Mark on pointing the gun is transatlantic.

I studied US history and taught at college level. But after college and in my retirement, I'm reading World History!!! Fascinating👍👍👍👌👌👌🤓🤓🤓🤓 I recommend "WHAT IF?" about various world battles, wars, that may have come out differently due to smallest changes, i.e. WEATHER, GEOGRAPHY, MAN POWER, CONFUSIONS ABOUT ENEMIES.😜😛😝👌👌👌👍👍👍

That was great, i enjoyed revisiting Peep Show, ive seen it SO many times (i watched tons and tons of comedy through lockdown, months on end!) Its great to revisit this through your eyes, it really is a brilliant show but not many other countries get the privilege of seeing it. I also love Aussie comedy, its very dry, deadpan, they love to shock, very 'off the wall ' stuff too, a very similar sense of humour.. quite cruel 😂 Anything by Chris Lilly is fabulous, Kath and Kim, No Activity (this is brilliant!!!) Mother and Son, (old but gold) The Breaker Upperers (Kiwi not Aussie), What We Do In The Shadows... these are my top Aussie recommendations, IF you can find them... 👌👌👌

I think a big problem for American TV companies is, they hate spending money on something they can't own directly. For most UK shows, they can only be licensed out. So a TV station in the US would only be able to show it for a certain amount of time and then have to pay again to re-air it, they hate doing that so they often try to make "the american version" of Uk shows, so they can get the ratings and keep their own money.....but as most American iterations show, the writers often don't get the essence of why people like the UK show in the first place.

Has been great watching these reactions! Hope you end up finishing peep show. Really nice to see your humble comments at the end of this one. I think the key difference with uk and usa sitcoms is uk laugh at failure and things going wrong, whereas usa is like a fake dream where everything goes well..some usa shows are good, but uk is much darker and things goes wrong, a sort of, how not to be, rather than a fantasy where everything is going great and the star the show gets the girl. Reason why south park is prob usas best show from majority of my uk friends is because it takes piss out americans, its one of the few shows that makes fun of usa culture but the dark obserd story lines usually have a message of how things could be better..seeing things go wrong makes it easier to think how it it could have been better. You left feeling like ,he should have done this instead..hard to explain..but enjoying your reactions of peep show!

The reason we in th UK have more freedom in comedy especially is we aren't beholden to adverts and sponsors that's why when the US gets a hit they fire out 26 episode seasons for the sponsors where as we can put controversial TV on as they aren't having sponsors saying you can't say that! Leaving more room for creative freedom

Comedy aside, the laws around grape for men are an absl joke. For example if 2 people are drunk and they fck and the woman regrets it in the morning, he technically graped her coz she was intoxicated. Whereas if a guys drunk and a woman isn’t and they fck, then it’s not considered that… Also there isn’t a cop in the world who will take you seriously as a man if you report it. 👍🏽

The US has so far attempted to remake Peep Show 3 or 4 times, but they don't get past the pilot episode. There must be some rules about why they can't just show the original series (maybe union laws preventing it? Censors not allowing the content uncut?). This episode has always made me uncomfortable as he was raped but it's played for laughs. If the roles were reversed it wouldn't be allowed.

I think that the more "edgy' British/Irish/Australian comedy shows would need to include some guidelines for US audiences. Other reaction channels have made me cringe. For example, reacting to Biggus Dickus where Cleese repeatedly slaps Chapman, most reactions don't see the joke, they stop and wince as though they are witnessing actual physical abuse. Let alone missing the point about making fun of somebody with a speech impediment. Having said that, with your knowledge and enthusiasm for history, I wonder if you would appreciate a few episodes of Mastermind or University Challenge? No, not Scumbag College.
