When he was telling his son all about his experiences as a young man, all those fond memories, the mischief and all that….it was so touching, and also sad, because he died not long after that. We got to see some really candid family moments. RIP Fred. As a working class, North West girl, he holds a special place in my heart.

it's more poignant because the kids mother would not allow Fred to see his kids at all, this series was the first time he was able to spend time with them since the divorce (there's many quotes of him saying he could forgive anyone for anything EXCEPT his ex-wife taking his kids away from him).

I was at school between 1968 and 1979, which was the crossover period from Imperial to Metric and also included the decimilisation of the currency in 1971. I'm quite fortunate really because I can work both systems and being an engineer often have to. Despite 50 years or so of the Metric system, I still think in Imperial units. Can't help it. Something is 10 feet and never 3 metres if thinking generally without the need for precision. Human body-weight is in Stones and Pounds not these silly kilograms. When I'm buying apples or potatoes or cheese or bacon I automatically convert to pounds of weight to see what shocking prices are being charged. For me, £1.50 is still 30 bob. All this despite the old systems only being around for the first 7 or 8 years of my life, and of course I cannot remember the first five. I was born in 1963. Old habits die very hard. I think the only Imperial measurements we have left now is the Pint (20 fl oz and larger than an American pint @ 16 fl oz) and the Mile.

In 2011, Billy Connolly did a four episode travelogue series called 'Billy Connolly's Route 66', where he travelled Route 66 on his motor trike, meeting the people and hearing their stories along the way. All interspersed with some of his stand-up routines. It might be worth a look (hint hint) 😄

The major reason for the mix of metric and imperial over here is from when we joined the European Common Market (what eventually became the European Union) in the 1970s... Suddenly there was a push to standardise everything with the metric system used on the continent. In every day life however, most people still generally use imperial... Pints, miles, pounds, stones, feet and inches etc. It caused real public outrage when there were several cases in the early 2000s of British market vendors being prosecuted for selling their produce in imperial measurements. It was just what they'd always done, and was what their customers were used to. The fact it all boiled down to compliance with EU regulations, and the heavy-handed way the individuals were treated was one of the key moments that began to turn public opinion against the EU, which ultimately led to Brexit in 2016.

I had a great school geography school field trip to North Wales over 50 years ago. To look at all the glaciation geography. The teachers wouldn't take us up Snowdon though, because they claimed that some kid had "fallen off" the previous week. Our coach load of 30 odd lowland kids, did go a bit crazy when we were let loose on rocks and cliffs for the first time. Having grown up on the flat mud and clay next to the Thames.

I grew up watching Fred on the TV here in the UK - he was an insipring engineer - from his laddering of chimneys, to restoring his steam vehicles, to digging a pit shaft in his back garden complete with winding gear for a lift cage. Turns out we share a birthday - 28th April - just 19 years apart. This series was made in the first half of 2004 working around Freds failing health - and Fred went to Buckingham Palace on the 7th July 2004. The series was first broacast in 2005 - but unfortunately by that time Fred had passed away - he died on the 6th November 2004. His funeral brought his home town of Bolton to a standstill - with thousands of people lining the route of the cortege. His traction engine pulled a wagon with his coffin (with his flat cap place on top) and his steeplejack ladders and a painted wooden elephant he rescued from the council offices (it appears at the top of the Bolton town coat of arms). Several videos on RU-vid.

Spencer, Daniel, thank you so much for this series. It’s such a privilege to watch these with two guys who really appreciate the subject matter. Britain’s industrial heritage is not appreciated by most British people, yet it founded the wealth and prosperity of this country. You are right, it should be compulsory viewing. At least you guys appreciate it, and are spreading that appreciation through your channel. Now for my original, rather less serious comment… You guys are kidding, you use metric for illicit substances? I learned sixteenths of an ounce for those in the UK. This is all messed up 😂

Thomas Smiths bolt works in Atherton closed down in the late 2000's and was taken over and re-located several miles away. The old works is now a small housing estate. Atherton was once the centre of Nuts and Bolts in the world. There were half a dozen bolt works at least and all this screw-cutting and manufacture of bolts evolved from the earlier trade of Nail-making. Nails were made in Atherton up to 1000 years ago. There is still a pub in town called The Jolly Nailor.

Great series! Your comments reminded me of a visit to the National Engineering Museum in London. The had a large steam engine set up but being run by electric power to show it working. One large part was a centrifugal valve. I was with my young nephews and their friends, it was one of my nephews birthdays. Having trained at as engineering technician I started to explain how the valve and eventually the engine worked. I soon ended up with at least a dozen kids asking questions. Eventually we moved on but I was approached by a member of staff who thanked me. He said for years he had been asked about the engine but only had a sketchy knowledge and no understanding. My impromptu lecture had been easy to understand and he had taken notes for future enquiries. Honestly, as an engineer, my theory and knowledge had been good but using it practically had been, at best, average.

3:45 they bring thier own water if its ever needed in those areas, also right at the start it showed they left Porthmadogg, around that point in the map is Poert Meriion, the location of the original TV series The Prisoner (i am not a number, i am a free man ..... ha ... hahahahaha!) always worth a visit Yes we know people who have cooked several food on thier motorcycle engine, thre are things called hollands pies, and people out them in thier foil tray on thier engine Slate is still mined for a lot of things from roofing for listed buildings (have to be repaired in exactly the original materials) counters, also a lot of tourism stuff round wales like plates. the slate and coal mines are not overly toursim attractions though Baenau FFestiniog has a main road that cleaves through what was the old mins embankments, i was nearly killed in 2000 there when a huge piece of slate broke off skated down the hillside, and hit the trucks wing mirror (a 1 inch diameter tube holding a 2ft long 6 inch wide mirror) wiping it and the mount out, when we looked back, it was approximately 2ft by 4ft piece of slatemoving at high speed, and was less than an inch from going through the passenger side window. 31:54 this is also the story of how 2 million + people became unemployed in the 80's and its never got any better, they just fudge the paperwork by changing the name of the benefits, making different benefits that dont get counted so they can still use the unemployed figures in a political sense. For bolts and sockets etc, we have a bodge it and it works for older cars and motorcycles where we find it hard to get hold of the imperial measurement stuff,

I demonstrate Blacksmithing at shows across the UK, we hand forge a toasting fork and make 'turbo toast' on the forge in less than 3 seconds! That's far quicker than you can eat it! Cooking in the smoke box is very common and landrover owners know how to cook on the exhaust manifold. I've been down a slate mine, you can too, it is a extraordinary experience! We bought 'Slate Dust' a confectionary which we added to vodka to make 'Slate Vodka', the Welsh were most impressed and could not get enough of it! Er no I can get imperial off the self no problem, there are also other screw thread systems, pipe, bicycle, live steam model, etc that are not the norm imperial or metric off the shelf no roblem in the UK.

In the UK most older people will use imperial. The youngest are probably more familiar with metric. However the people inbetween will probably be happy using either. We still drive in miles and drink pints. Unlike the other countries in Europe imperial measurements are everywhere in the UK. I know that the UK is thought of as binge drinkers. But that's just a few idiots. Overseas, away from Europe, pubs are used differently. Here in Britain the pub is really important to our culture. It was a place where you could relax and meet up with friends and have a talk about things, just like they're doing in the video. People didn't go there for just the alcohol they went for company or to see friends. For example :- In our local pub an older gentleman in his 70s would come to the pub every day at 1pm and he would go home at 7pm. He got poorly (I can not remember the illness but it was caused by alcohol) and was told that he must stop drinking. The gent took the doctor's advice and stopped. But he still came into the pub just like always. But, this time he just drank orange juice.

While I have never used a traction engine to cook dinner, as a boy at the Canterbury Steam Preservation Society the main workshop shed didn't have an electric kettle. Instead, nearly unlimited quantities of water for tea and coffee were boiled in a steam locomotive.

That beam was made 3 miles from my house and transported around 200 miles to London. The Victorians didn't understand that there were tiny lifeforms in the filthy water, causing typhoid and cholera and they believed it was the 'miasma', or smell. Bazalgette designed the sewers to move the effluence to remove the stink and so the problem was solved. The cholera epidemic was traced to a public water pump

One of the saddest video of Fred's work was his friends and his steam engine mates having to recue his engines which were being vandalised by trophy hunters and vandals. All because of the family's arguing about his inheritance.

America must have had a heyday of steel production (probably still is) and what about all those wonderful pictures of the men who built the skyscrapers, even before WW2. Also Detroit and the car industry back in the day. We've lost our way now sadly.
