While not the tastiest looking this MRE has a breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepackaged bag designed to last for a day. Quite different than a U.S. MRE in terms of food included!

сніданок (snidanok) - breakfast; обід (obid) - lunch; вечеря (vecherya) - dinner/supper. don't know what the prefix of "sn-" means in breakfast, but "-idanok" seems to be a dimunitive form related to їда (yida), which means "food" or "feast", but is rather archaic. the modern word for food is їжа (yizha), obviously related but a bit different. the prefix of "ob-" in lunch means "about", so lunch literally means "about eating"/"about feasting"/"about food". вечеря (vecherya) for dinner/supper translates to something like "eveninger" and is related to вечір (vechir), which just means evening. first package (сніданок - breakfast) contained: сіль (sil) - salt; галети/ґалети (halety/galety) - some type of biscuit, the word is from french "galette"; цукор (tsukor) - sugar; кава (kava) - coffee; волога серветка (voloha servetka) - wet wipe; the meal was: preserved product with meat and vegetables. beans and meat. beans with vegetables and beef meat. sterilized (yes, it's weird bureaucratic speech for meat and beans, don't know why it is that way, but that's why the google translate said meat so often) it is supposed to be something like a morning beef stew with beans, carotts and onions. (yes, ukrainians tend to eat warm and hearty breakfasts. not everyone, not always, but this is for soldiers who do hard work. obviously you can get your croissants with butter or scrambled eggs in ukraine too...) second package (вечеря - dinner/supper) contained: salt; sugar; biscuits; wet wipes; мед (med) - honey; чай (chay) - tea; сухарі (sukhari) - crackers (the literally are called "army wheat crackers", but in ukrainian you can switch the words around so it says "crackers army wheat" but it still makes the same sense as if it would say army wheat crackers); the meal was: preserved product with meat and vegetables. porridges and meat. rice porridge with pork meat. sterilized third package (обід - lunch) contained: salt, sugar, darker crackers, tea and so on. the meal was: preserved product with meat and vegetables. porridges and meat. pearled barley with chicken. sterilized; first lunch dishes. soup with porridges based on meat broth with pork meat. sterilized; some sort of jam, couldn't read the name. as the war is going on in the soldier's own country, they get fresh products and preserved products from home (partners, parents other relatives) and cook much of the food fresh. can't speak for every unit of course and not for the immediate front line, but they get fed quite good there. germany is sending a shit load of canned food. saw several pictures and videos with canned soups and meals from german supermarket chains, saw many videos of soldiers cooking fresh stuff or being fed by the local population too. and obviously the rations the ukrainian soldiers get are not 3 years expired. that's a thing for the russians, who had rations from 2015 with them when they attacked in 2022. p.s. read a few months back that they have all vegan meals now and even kosher and halal ones.

Actualy in Czech language we have almost the same words snídaně/oběd/večeře (but we use latin alphabet), snídaně is in Czech conected with the word "sníst" which is from the word "jíst" which meand "to eat".🙂
@grumpyfatso3071
@grumpyfatso3071 Месяц назад
@@davidpelc ah, that's interesting. Ukrainian "snidanok" would have the same etymological roots then. Have to read more on that. And by the way, thanks to the Czechs for being such good friends and allies. Ukraine really has to take you all as an example in the future.

"Meat with meat" is Google being confused by very dense overthinking language required by our counterpart to FDA. Manufacturer need to explicitly describe everything in a predetermined set of terms: 1. Its a "Preserved meat with vegetables" (as opposed to meat flavoured mystery goop). 2. It is called "Buckwheat soup with chicken broth and chicken meat" 3. Less regulation more culture thing -- we say "meat of pork/chicken/beef" when we talk explicitly about muscle tissue.

I think it's not "fair" to review it while its expireed. I also think using one right now which is not expired is not a good idear, becuase they need them atm somewhere else for a better use.
@Unknown-ek1ox
@Unknown-ek1ox Месяц назад
Yeah I gotta partly agree. Reviewing a non-expired one IMHO makes more sense or is more worth it. After all a key part of an MRE review you cannot really review: How the food tastes.

Bit weird it didn't translate the honey but just the letters. UA is probably the largest producer of honey in Europe. I hope you guys find a non expired UA MRE one day, but then again I can only assume these are currently in high demand due to being needed in an actual war.

I spent 34 years in the Army and really hated when the MREs came out. You can’t beat canned pears and the John Wayne bars in the old C-Rations. I would trade everything for canned pears and would have 5 to 6 canes of pears in my ruck every day.

I knew I was in for a treat when you made eating kind of optional during the introduction. To be honest, I have a hard time with microwave meals from the regular grocery store. So MREs are something I leave to others to suffer through. And currants are a berry native to Europe, tiny little berries used often in jam. I do see them occasionally in US stores, but not often.

Most of those barley dishes used to come in a tin, like somebody literally bought it off a supermarket shelf and put it in an MRE. Always stodgy and so thick you need a knife to slice off a piece but they are apparently edible if you haven't eaten all day. never reheated in a fire but yes reheated in boiling water.

I was actually secretly hoping for a Ukrainian one since I recently discovered your channel and was delighted to see this, just a bummer it was expired. As a secret MRE aficionado I remember seeing another video about an Ukrainian MRE (not sure what version) and they did stand out given the extras the had - esp. the hygiene pads they had. Hope you can find one of those. It did stand out to me because it had those things (and some kinda buckwheat main course) that other MREs didn't have. They literally had "shower towels" or something, probably handy if you're in trenches all day.

Well, at least you can whittle that hardtack down to a lovely point if ammo starts running low. Lack of morale boosting items and general appearance aside, I appreciate how much food is in this because I am similar to Sergeant Sous Chef in that I'd prefer more main meals to snacks and breakfast items so this is right up my alley. Or it would have been three years ago.

Old soviet block armies always seem to be fed tinned meat, like pate, or barley and soup or stew like dishes, even for breakfast a lot. It's probably filling but most ones I've seen being eaten are bland and tasteless. currents are made from drying current berries guys, red or black currants normally. It's not surprising they don't know seeing as america banned the growing and importation of the currant berries back like 1930s 40s I believe.

So, I checked on Google.... it seems "Dinner" is "Lunch" and then they have "Supper" which I could see translator confusing it as "Dinner" So... Breakfast, Dinner, Supper
@irishtheblack
@irishtheblack Месяц назад
Okay, I used the translator on my Samsung Keyboard.... Сніданок - Breakfast обід - Lunch Вечеря - Dinner So, looks like translator error on the phone. Because if they call "Lunch" their "Dinner" then Google Translate would be confused. Likewise with "Dinner" being "Supper"
