From Marabou I like the chocolate bars Daim, Japp and Coco. Also the chocolate cakes with mint or orange crisps, Daim, Japp and Frukt och mandel (fruit and almond). From Fazer...almost everything. Try the Marianne candys, Dumle and Fazer mint (chokolate bites with mint creme inside). Another thing you should look out for of nordic sweets is Peps. I don't remember who's making them.

The Marianne candies are great, and Fazer Blue was also a childhood favorite. A more everyday fave was Marabou Schweizernöt (Swiss Nut), a hazelnut chocolate bar. Fazer is pronounced something like Fáh(t)zer, with the accent on the first, short syllable. More like the a in father (but shorter), less like in fable or Fay. The trademark M logo of Marabou was designed by the late Sigvard Bernadotte, an uncle of the current Swedish king. He was born a Prince, and also used to be the Duke of Uppland, but lost his titles when he married a commoner. The Daim bar by Marabou is also good. It is very similar to Hershey's Skor bar, but with better quality chocolate and a slightly softer filling. Coincidentally, the word skör in Swedish means brittle. However the word skor means shoes. Always seemed a bit funny that Hershey would make a rip-off version of the Swedish Daim (originally Dajm) bar, with a name that means shoes in Swedish. They should have added the umlauts to the o, as brittle makes a lot more sense.
@FromtheHobbitHole
@FromtheHobbitHole 3 года назад
That’s a lot of great background on Fazer, Marabou, and Hershey’s. Not sure if we’ve ever seen Hershey’s skor bar! If it’s sold in the US, we would definitely see it around where we live because Hershey, PA isn’t far from us. Thanks for explaining how to properly pronounce Fazer!!
@JarodMoonchild1975
@JarodMoonchild1975 3 года назад
@fordhouse8b But the Marabou/Freia Dajm/Daim bar is based off the American 'Dime' bar, that cost a dime to buy, originally. Personally, I've never seen a pic of it, or looked it up, because it's what I always heard, ergo "knew". So don't attack me if that's wrong, but rather those who put out that false information, if that's the case.

There's an official Fazer store in helsinki that has all sorts of unique candies, and in winter they serve hot chocolate and even more goodies. My brother was there two christmases ago, and waxed lyrical about it. As for peppermint, it's a bit of a specialty in parts of Finland and Sweden - for example, the town of Gränna in Sweden is famous for their peppermints known as "polkagrisar" (literally "polka pigs"), which they still make much the same way as 150 years ago, by hand. There's even tours where you can watch it happen, and IIRC even workshops that let you try it yourself.

I really think you'd enjoy reading the Moomin Family books; although they start off being books for children, they gradually get quite deep by the time you get to the last ones, such as Moominland In November; similar to The Hobbit being a book for kids, and LOTR being more for grown-ups. Read all about them and the author, Tove Janssen, on wikipedia, she was a very interesting person. Really enjoy your vids!😊

The books were originally written in Swedish. Tove's mother was Swedish and her father Finnish-Swedish. It was from the summer house in Blidö (in the Stockholm archipelago where she spent her summers) and the area surrounding it that Tove drew her inspiration for Moominvalley and the Moominhouse. (Stockholm is of course the capital of Sweden, but I guess you already knew that.)

@@johanribaeus My illustration teacher a bunch of years ago was a friend of Tove, and told me a hilarious anecdote about when the Japanese got the rights to an animated Moomin show. Tove had resisted adaptations from the US and Japan for a *long* time due to the disrespect they always showed source material, but after long negotiations all of a sudden she allowed an animated show by them. When my teacher called to ask wth had happened, Tove just answered in her usual surly way: "At least I got them to drop the f***ing samurai."

Marabou Chocolate bars come with a pretty large variation, for example there is a few types with nuts, there is one with liquorice, and there is a couple with fruit flavor like orange, my favorite would probaby be the one with crushed Hazel nuts, there is also one with whole nut's called "Helnöt" (literal translation is whole nut) i find the whole intact nuts to be a bit to big for my taste. interesting enough though... the hazel nut bar is actually called "Schweizer nöt" and according to Marabou themself it's kinda a mystery why they call it that. i would definitely advice you to give the different Marabou chocolates a go, oh! and let's not forget the Danish brand Cloetta, they have some amazing things as well, like their "Kex choklad" and "plopp" man i love Plopp with its soft gooey toffe filling... but not a particular fan of their foam candy like Ahlgrens Bilar and Juleskum. damn it... now i want chocolate....

Not to nitpick but Finland is not a Scandinavian country but a Nordic country. And Bassetts is actually a British company. I know it is a thing to mix things into the chocolate bars these days but I much prefer a plain Fazer Blue bar or the Marianne candies by themselves. Glad you liked the bar though.

Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts are about as Scandinavian as Aston Martin. Bertie Bassett of Geo. Bassett & Co Ltd., Sheffield, England. Was part of Cadbury; now part of a god-awful global conglomerate. Such is the modern way. Panda liquorice is from Finland and is one of my favourites. Denmark could be said to have the best liquorice products though.
@FromtheHobbitHole
@FromtheHobbitHole 3 года назад
What’s interesting is that we had a panda licorice sent to us last year along with a bunch of other British sweets. So we had a Finnish licorice in with the British items and now a British licorice in with the Scandinavian sweets!

@sequri Well, Marabou/Freia is owned by a global entity now as well, Mondelēz, and it sucks. In the end, all companies that we used to know from our countries, will bought up by Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, Mondelēz, and the like. And it's a shame, really. But I don't think there's much we can do about it, unfortunately.
@sequri
@sequri 3 года назад
@@JarodMoonchild1975 I’m not familiar with the Marabou and Freia products, but Mondelēz is the conglomerate to which I was referring. Unfortunately, you are completely correct in your assessment of confectionery and its manufacturing and distribution future in general. You could easily get me back on my hobby horse about capitalism, globalism etc. People are behaving like sheep and therefore will be treated like sheep. It’s all about the money now: “show me the moneyyy!!”. We no longer have a progressive society because of this. We have a conservative one. All the manufacturing sector is being turned into an investment vehicle for shareholders. The product and the customer are now completely secondary (if not outright ignored). Nothing is built to last, deliberately (by design). These confectionery items we all [used to at least] know and love are firmly part of industrial food production and therefore should be treated as such. There is no nutrient value whatsoever; it’s purely indulgence, but a poor choice of indulgence tbh. The power of marketing and distribution. I worked as a contractor in the 🍫 industry many years ago and if people saw the raw ingredients and the manufacturing processes involved in the production of such, they would probably think twice before ingesting any again. This is more than likely true of all industrial food production, which have many additives which are there for purposes such as colouration or to give long shelf life etc. The peas in a tin of peas are a lot greener and last a lot longer than the product that went into the process, for example. Stay away from any industrial food product (tin, packet, box etc) as much as you can; it has very little value and in some cases can actually be harmful (neurotoxins etc). This includes ALL processed (by definition) meats! Organic fresh fruit and vegetables etc should be the mainstay (proper nutrition). The reason why wealth is such a good indicator of longevity is because those with money and knowledge buy the right/best products and those with low incomes buy mainstream, off the shelf, junk foods which they know absolutely nothing about its provenance. I know of a senior manager at a major soft drinks manufacturer who will not let any of his kids touch any of their products! 😳

From the Hobbit Hole It would appear so, but I think a lot of people don't persevere once they have a bad experience. Liquorice, like nuts, coffee, chocolate, fruits etc covers an extremely wide gamut. If someone rules out chocolate because they tried a cheap dark chocolate from the local gas station when they were a kid, then they would be missing out on Galaxy, Dairy Milk, Terry's, Fry's, Caramac and umpteen Belgian and Swiss chocolatiers, for example. Likewise, don't eat pistachios or hazelnuts because they didn't like walnuts, or any of Costa Coffee's latest and greatest because they had a cheap instant once. 😋👌

You eat the chocolate the wrong way, biting and chewing on a piece of chocolate does not give the right taste. The right way is to put a piece of chocolate in your mouth and let the heat in your mouth melt the chocolate, then the flavors are released and the taste becomes more flavorful. As proof, take a piece of a chocolate chew and swallow, then you take a new piece of the same chocolate but let this piece melt in your mouth, then you will feel the difference.
