Americas Mailbox & South Dakota Domicile Part 2 

I’m not military however if you were thinking of staying on base when you set up your residency, realize you need a receipt from a campground or hotel to show when you set up your domicile.

It has been awhile and I’m sure things have probably changed since I originally posted this video. I am planning on researching the three states again this coming Fall and creating an update to domicile. As it is, I’m still getting the same benefits I have always had being in South Dakota. I would also suggest to see if anyone else has posted anything more recent and it’s always a good idea to go online and check out what info is important to you in each state. Good luck 👍

That’s awesome. Realize however if you’re buying a home in South Dakota, depending on what city you’re moving to you may be subject to city tax on top of the state tax. Americas mailbox sits on unincorporated land and therefore is only subject to state tax and no city tax. Good luck and safe travels

Yes and you need to establish an address. There are a number of businesses that do that but I trust Americas Mailbox.

The idea is to set up your domicile so you need a valid drivers license or state Id, you need to stay one night and have the receipt of your stay and you need an address as in Americas Mailbox to have on your new SD licenses. I don’t believe you need to show proof that you own a vehicle. Hope this helps.

This one is tricky. Nevada requires you to get your Nevada license within a short amount of time. I think it’s 60 days… could be 30. So if you have a home address in Nevada your required to have a Nevada license. We made it work because we were in the process of selling our home and leaving the state. Yes you do need a South Dakota license and you also need to sign a letter of intent to eventually move to SD. 😄 whatever that really means. So yes on the domicile.

We signed a waiver with Chapman where we were not charged any tax on the vehicle. We already had our SD license and address so we just paid taxes and license through the SD treasury department. It’s a great way to go. And yes… we only paid the 4%

Make sure you set up your domicile first. Once your a South Dakota resident you tell the dealership you are registering and paying taxes through South Dakota. We then had 45 days to finalize taxes and registration. If you are planing to finance any part of the rig I would suggest to do that before you officially retire so you show that you are employed. Also you will have the dealership mail the title to either Americas mailbox or the Pennington county treasurer. That’s where you will be registering your vehicle. I know there are other companies that might be less that America’s Mailbox, however I feel for what they provide they are well worth the price. They will do all of this for you. Lastly! I would complete the domicile no later than the first of October. SD weather starts to get bad after that. Good luck and safe travels!

Our Road To Camelot Thanks unfortunately we live in California and won’t retire till November so logistics are gonna be pain. Just don’t want to pay these taxes.

@@pgatos1 You should note that you do not have to be a resident of SD or have a SD driver's license to title and register a vehicle there. You can do this and retain your California residency. And, you do not have to go to SD at all. You sign up for a low end mail service at "Americas Mailbox", and get a mailing address. Then you pay them a small fee and sign a power of attorney to allow them to do the work for you. All this you can do sitting at home in California. I found my insurance dropped sixty percent going from California to SD. For some reason, people are not mentioning the great benefit of being able to title a vehicle in SD without being an actual resident.

@@JustVinnyBlues Ok I have another question along those lines, can I register my 2007 Ford pickup in S. Dak. to save money on registration but still drive in Nor Cal? Or will I have to get S. Dak. Plates then get hassled because I live in Ca. but have out of state plates?

That’s a great question! I was concerned about this at first myself. However our dealership forwarded the title to Americas mailbox where we were able to pick it up and take it to the treasury department of South Dakota where they do vehicle registrations. They intern took the title, gave us our license plates then they forwarded the title back to the lienholder. I’m guessing this is standard procedure because no one questioned a thing when we went to purchase the truck. We bought the fifth wheel out right so there was no question about that.

I am talking about sales tax. There is no state tax. You don’t own property to set up domicile so there would be no property tax.
