Its easy as pie to Register your car in South Dakota. You dont need any service to do it for you. Plus, Dakota Post, YBA, and others are extremely high costs for just a PMB. You can find places much cheaper, and then do the work yourself. I did it, and it is simple.
I've noticed that you keep detailed financial records. I respect that - though I've focused on finances in the past, this breakdown and another you shared with me are quite detailed. Kudos for being able to keep such detailed records.
Thanks! I like numbers. We use YNAB for our finances and run several of our own Excel type files. When we started the RV Build, first thing I did was start a spreadsheet 😂
Your "Total Cost to Establish Domicile" - couple of questions: 1-) Did you have to pay out of pocket for the full amount or were/are you able to pay monthly for both your RV and Truck Insurance coverage? 2-) RV and Truck Registration - are these costs fixed each year or are they adjustable fees per year based on the value of your RV and Truck? Thank you for putting this video together, it was very easy to understand the processes for someone who is just starting to look at going full time within the next handful of years. Helped me better understand what I need to have in place as well as the cost(s) to expect in order to domicile in SD. I appreciate the time you put into this video and thank you in advance for addressing my questions above.
1. Monthly on the truck. Yearly for the vintage trailer. We switched to a new 5th wheel now and are able to pay monthly. 2. Registration is fixed. We have a 2022 Ram 3500 Dually now, registration in SD is $175 per year. AZ would have been over $2k for the first year. Same with the trailer.

When it comes to insurance for the RV, it’s a risk assessment I suppose. The vintage they wanted all the money but for the 5th wheel they are ok with monthly.
Great video, Just received our notice for a one year tag in AZ and it is $4,440.63 for a 2019 Entegra Aspire. We still work so we are stuck for another year. Can't wait to leave AZ. We love SD as we visit Deadwood every year.
Insurance costs seem way too high, about 2k more per year than what I pay in AZ. The trick is to work with local insurance brokers that shop multiple company's rates. Registration on new vehicles is high in AZ, only way to get around that is drive well maintained older vehicles.

Excellent video thank you! I've been down a long rabbit hole in searching the best income tax free states side by side. My top priorities are no income tax, no retirement tax (I have a 401k), no requirement to be physically present in state for long, no vehicle emissions or safety inspections. I'm particularly interested in FL and TN. Can you offer any spreadsheets you may have showing a side by side state comparison as I'm sure you created at some point? Or any websites that you found very good at what I'm after? PLEASE SHARE YOUR HELP AND WISDOM AS I REALLY NEED IT!!!
I’m sorry, I don’t. TN is not a domicile state and we did not opt for Florida because of some of their schooling laws. So for us, SD is the only state.
@@HomeMeetsRoad Nope. The idea of going into Nomading blind to me, is scarey! You started from the ground up, built everything. And went the most extreme and harder route to get where you are. With those extreme conditions and your thorough videos, with full break downs and list, shows where you stand exactly, and the things that are required along the way to maintain the life. If some one was to follow your model now just from what you've shown so far, if they bought a new trailer with a warranty, still having the knowledge you've given so far, they chances of success are much much greater at this point. And finding the end and outs, how to save money, what states to purchase in, what places to travel and when, put other people at a better advantage leaning from someone whose been there, done that, made a t-shirt and put it on video. It's great help. Plus your voice monotone is nice. I bet you can read babies to 😴
@@AngryIrishMan I agree - it is a scary idea. I have a lot of respect for those that can upend their lives and make a different way for themselves. Having an income is a significant help, but there are ways to cut costs drastically if needed, at least from a couple videos I've watched. By no means am I an expert on the life, but it seems to me that if one learns from those already living the nomadic life, it can make for an easier transition if you want to take the leap. I'm grateful for people like these folks that are out there, showing what can be done. what problems may come, and how they overcome adversity.

Very detailed and interesting! We are domiciled in FL but it's interesting to see another option! The requirement to return to TX for vehicle inspections was a major con for us and was basically the main thing that ruled it out. We have good friends in FL so that made it easier for us to choose. 🙂
@@unknownquantity4440 if your in Florida already I’d probably stick with that. I don’t know if SD would save you any money unless you bought a new rig. I think SD sales taxes are lower but not sure.

We are still with Americas Mailbox. For us nothing has changed. I heard that there is an eye exam involved when getting your license (it’s just reading your ABC’s right at the counter). We have changed trucks and RV since this video and everything went smooth. Americas Mailbox handled all the paperwork.
Technically yes. If you own multiple properties then usually they are classified as seasonal or investment, not as primary. Once you claim a property as primary, then legally, that is your residence. Personally it all comes down to wording and interpretation 🤷♂️

We have full-time insurance with Nationwide. No problems. We just had a claim in FL with 8k worth of hail damage. No issues what so ever. Deposited the money on the spot.

We do not have a home anywhere. We are truly full-time. Americas Mailbox is our legal address on our drivers license and tax returns. We used a local SD insurance agent who setup the truck and trailer with Nationwide. I was straight forward with us being full-time and they helped us along the way. Note that we have changed trucks and trailers since but are still with Nationwide. I can dig through emails and look up the agent if you wish? Yes, a title is required to register in SD. If you have a loan on the vehicle, you have to send a letter to your loan company (Americas Mailbox provides this letter). This letter will request the title to be sent to the SD… if you pay Americas Mailbox to handle the registration, it’s really easy and simple. I highly recommend spending the $60 (I think) that it costs for them to deal with it all.
What if you're looking for employment in another state? Wouldn't they care about your SD ID/License plate after a while even if you pay local taxes? What about the insurance company? It would be very strange to play such low rates but make all of your claims in the middle of NYC...
I don’t have an answer for you and I don’t know as we are self employed. It’s common for full-timers to get temporary employment in states that they are not resident in. I suppose you would state that SD is your primary and wherever you are as a secondary.
Great video. Lots of useful information. I'm thinking of moving to Mexico and selling my CA home (to not be under their taxing thumb). Sounds like this is a good option. What about voting and jury duty? How do you deal with those if you're rarely/ever in SD?
Voting is by mail. Regarding jury duty… I have been told that you let them know you are out of state and that clears it. Not sure though. Haven’t run into that.
We own rental property in Alabama and a vacation cabin in Virginia. Soon we’ll sell our house in California (can’t wait to get out of CA) Question is, can we still do this domicile thing in SD while being owners of property in other states?
Depends. If I understand correctly, it comes down to which state you register as your primary residency. Several states require your vehicle to be registered at your home address. If your Alabama property is a rental and your Virginia property is a vacation/second residency, then you could make SD your primary domicile. We currently do not own property, so I’m not 100% certain.
Depends-all of our banks (Wells Fargo, Chase, Apple Card) work but not Capital One. Capital One is set to a friends house and the mailbox is our mailing address. Same goes for vehicle loans. I was pre-approved with Capital One to purchase our new truck but because of the address issue, we did not go with them. We ended up ordering our RAM Dually from a SD dealer, which had lenders who would work with ‘full-timers.’

Can I register the vehicle & trailer in SD without being a "Domicile" or "Resident"? Yes, SD allows you to register vehicles without being a resident. All you need is a PO Box. Note that we pay Americas Mailbox to handle our vehicle registration so I don’t know the process if you did it yourself.

No drivers test if you have a drivers license. I remember a eye exam machine at the drivers license place but I don’t remember if we had to read a line. Sorry!
I'm curious as to whether a person who owns an ordinary passenger vehicle..... not a "motorhome", but just an ordinary car..... can get register his car and get car insurance in South Dakota without also having a physical address (other than "America's Mailbox"). That is, I would assume the rules of the game are quite different for ordinary cars as compared with RV's.
I have heard that people are registering expensive cars, like Lambos and such, in South Dakota in order to bypass the high tax, registration, and emissions. I think you would need a PO Box in SD at minimum.
@@HomeMeetsRoad Yes... "at minimum". I think that a lot of auto insurance companies are unwilling to sell an insurance policy to a person who is living out of his car. And it's not ONLY an issue for people who are trying to insure an ordinary car; it's also an issue for people who have done a "van conversion", but which "van conversion" falls short of the criteria that must be met in order for the vehicle to qualify as a "motor home".
Regarding the travel trailer, propane, electrical, and a stove top where the major factors for insurance. I will ask our friends, Wanderful Revolution. They did a van conversion and are ‘SD’.
Wabderful Revolution said they filled out some paperwork at the DMV that the van had a toilet, sink, etc… and they got an RV certificate for the insurance. No inspection.
How long is the driver's license good for and as far as any small requirements are inspections every other year or so required or is it just pay the fees and you're good to go far as the driver's license that's all you had to do was basically turn over your old driver's license and two forms of ID plus the information from the mailbox place and that's all they require they didn't require a driving test I test or anything else?
For the drivers license it’s just as simple as you stated. Good for five years. So every five years you need to show a receipt of one nights stay at a SD RV park or hotel. For the vehicles, there are no inspections, nothing. Just proof the vehicle is titled to you. They do require to see how much tax you paid when you purchase the vehicle. If less than 4%, you would need to pay SD the difference, but if you paid more than 4% you are good to go.
So that's all you had to do was just basically walk into DMV with all that information do they issue the driver's license on the spot or do you have to wait for it in the mail thanks for the video very informative by the way what two forms of ID do they have to be picture ID so you say social security card and birth certificate would probably work or do they have to be picture ID because obviously if you're turning over your let's say California whatever state ID that would already prove something in it LOL
By the way let's say you don't want to use the mail forwarding service that you used or any mail forwarding service will they accept a PO Box as long as you stayed one day in an RV park or hotel
@@menorah7 Yup, that's all. It's so simple! Yes, the driver's license is one ID. The second ID does not need to be a picture ID. Jessa and Brax used a birth certificate and I (since I'm not a citizen), used my Green Card. We also had our Social Security Cards with us just in case.

Wondering if you were able to get health insurance in South Dakota? Heard they don't like RVer's getting their insurance and they may require utility bills to obtain through the Marketplace.
We are self insured. We always pay out of pocket. We do have a universal accident writer and reversible life insurance. Both have nothing to do with SD.

Which means the law is broken as police enforce state granted nobility . United States Constitution Article 1 Section 10 prohibits the states from both grant of nobility as well as bill of attainder. Each states own constitution ensures a similar provision . The 14th ammendments privileges and immunitys clause ensures that . And article 6 supremacy clause ensures that any law otherwise has no ground . While having form and shape of a law , being contrary to the constitutions ... mandatory minimum auto insurance laws , are in fact not laws at all . FYI .😃
@@smaksymiv4950 your message is very noble. You are referring to everything under the guidelines of the u.s.constitution. prior to 1938 you are correct. Anything after 1938 is considered a whole different ball of wax. While some people will try that example to a officer of the courts( police)- they have option of citing you with a ticket of violation or completely tow everything to the impound. So I was curious - how do you not pay federal and state taxes on fuel when your vehicle is in need of more? By definition when you travel the roadways, you are on state land and their definition is that it is their land, not yours! And they will kindly remind you who is the boss! You're mistaken every state has by way of privileges and immunity a carry over of rights in each states own bill of rights, in Ohio subsections 17 & 19 of section 1 when read together outline my point by relationship to article 1 section 10 of the US constitution . The state has the road only for safety regulation & maintenence rights in no way shape or form may the state claim ownership of the PUBLIC ROADS . This means that the road belongs incrementally to the citizenry for all lawfull uses found in title 23 USC . When you pay fuel tax you're paying for the road which is why no governing body may have ownership of it . The state even refers to the road as a state FACILITY , found thru out state law in to many places to list . Insurance mandatory by law , enforced by police is a state grant of nobility . And is unconstitutional .
