Ever wonder how the Americas got their names? Meet Amerigo Vespucci, a famous Italian explorer who piloted voyages from Europe to the Americas around the year 1500.
Amerigo's journal entries on his encounters with the natives are the scenarios of nightmares. Possibly where the term savage was used to describe some of the natives and eventually all natives.
The first use of the name America on a known map was in 1507 by famous German cartographers Martin Waldseemüller & Matthias Ringman following the Spanish derivation of what the natives of northern edge of South America called their homeland near the Orinoco River all the way down to Peru- Amaraca or Maracapana- by the 1499 expedition of explorer Alonso de Ojeda of which Alberigo Vespucci was a member. After his voyages west and returning to Europe some years later, after 1507, Alberigo Vespucci changed his christian name to "Emerigo" claiming that the new world was named after him. Further more the last Incan emperor's name was Túpac Amaru who was executed in the late 1500s. The name Amaru here being synonymous with the Aztec god Quetzacoatl messenger of the sun. If the new world was named after Vespucci it would have most certainly been a derivation of his surname name possibly Vespugia. Vespucci and his compadres were liars and rascals who claimed history as their own and decieved generations.
That's bullshit. Waldseemuller used the Latinized version of Amerigo's first name (America) and designed a map of the 'New World' which he called 'America' in Vespucci's honor. Since then it was variously referred to as 'America', the 'Americas', and then ultimately North and South America as two separate continents. It was Vespucci who landed in Brazil and realized it wasn't an island, but a new continent previously unknown to Europeans.
Some truth of the references to the first nations people, but the assertion Amerigo was Spanish is wrong. Stop spreading disinformation. His name Vespucci, A is listed and referenced in many texts. Dig deeper if you will, travel to Italy.
I used this for my project my teacher recommended this :) tysm you made me pass my tests wich is half my grade ;) keep up the good work Edit: tysm for 3 like :O
First and foremost, thanks for watching and for your support! Please tell your students we say hi! In regard to your comment, we probably should have just said astronomy to clear up confusion but astrology was technically correct. Probably worth explaining to your students that Vespucci wasn’t using horoscopes to sail, though! But the two subjects didn’t become separate disciplines until the age of reason (17th century) or at least based on the research we’ve seen that’s the case. Fun fact, Amerigo’s nephew, Bartolomeo, rose to be a Professor of Astrology (Astronomy) at the University of Pisa.
There's a good reason why he thought it was Asia: that's exactly what they were looking for. Western European economies grew on the back of trade with Asia (the so-called 'Silk Roads') since the 2nd Century. The Ottoman Empire rose to power in the 15th Century, defeating the Venetian Navy, and by 1450 the West was cut off from Asian markets. So they were looking for new routes and accidentally landed in the Caribbean.
no mention of Vespucci’s real first name? you do understand that Amerigo was not his given name from birth, or did we conveniently forget a critical detail of his story? try again @innovativehistory
Why the hate? We're just a channel trying to share our love for history! If we got something wrong we usually pin the comment with the correction to the top of the list. Feel free to share a link to what you're referencing, but Amerigo Vespucci is a historically accepted spelling of his name. I know if it were me and I got two continents named after me and would be remembered by history forever I wouldn't be too worried about a slight spelling change anyways, haha.
