This is a REAL classic. How many 200 year old songs can chart 200 years later?

Alot actually. Turn Turn Turn by the The Byrds (Pete Seeger) comes from Ecclisiastes in the bible And All Around My Hat by Steeleye Span is another exmple. Iron Maiden's Rime of the ancient mariner is also based on a simularly aged piece of poetry as this one.

It’s basically a poem about friends dying from alcoholism. Bellmans songs are often on this subject, glorifying, ridiculing and mourning alcoholism. Love that you’re doing this! Keep it up :)

If I'm not mistaken he would tend to glorify it in earlier years and increasingly mourn it with progressing age, as with other things too in life.

The context: "Till grälmakar Löfberg i stärbhuset vid Dantobommen, diktad vid graven. Dedicerad till Doktor Blad." To quarrelmaker Löfberg (?) in the foreclosed estate by Dantobommen, written by the grave. Dedication to doctor Blad. This is my off the top of my head translation, with a good measure of "artistic freedom" - I aim for almost singable but haven tried to rhyme. Its a 30 minute work so dont judge me too hard! Movitz, my brother, notice how our shade Cafrries a darkness within it How gold and purple, in the shovel over there Contrasts to gravel, clumps and clay bits Charon waving from his roaring stream then the gravedigger three times joins in (three shovels of dirt over the casket) No more of your grapes you will crush Therefore, Movitz, come help me to raise A gravestone over our sister (This verse is not in thåströms version, but in the original) "Ach längtansvärda och bortskymda skjul, Under de susande grenar, Där Tid och Döden en skönhet och ful Til et stoft förenar! Til dig aldrig Afund sökt någon stig, Lyckan, eljest uti flygten så vig, Aldrig kring Grifterna ilar. Ovän där väpnad, hvad synes väl dig? Bryter fromt sina pilar." Comes out to: Oh you beloved, and away obscured shack under the windrushing branches Where time and Death into one matter twines ugliness, and beauty To you envy never searched for a path Luck that otherwise in flight nimble, fast Never around the graves is flitting. There, armed en'my, what's for you to see? He piously breaks his arrows The small bell tolls, to the drone of the big With wreath the Cantor in the door now stands And at the prayer of the loud choirboys song This place is now sacred The path up to the Temple's grave-sprinkled place Is trodden slowly between yellowed rose leaves Rottened planks and stretchers Until the long and black-dressed row Softly and in tears will bow down low Thus, into resting from fighting and ball went quarrelmaker Löfberg, your spouse There from the grass, long necked and thin She still stares back at your house She was divided from "the Dantobom" today (name of her and Löfberg's tavern where Bellman and Movitz were regulars and drank a lot) And with her all our lustful boozed jaggs Now who will order the bottle? Thirsty was she, and thirsty am I We are thirsty all together....

That was excellent Ronny! I'm also having difficulty with these words and contexts to which I'm unfamiliar. This was very helpful! This song has been enchanting me since I've heard Cornelius Vreeswijk's version on a CD given to me as a gift, so I've been dying to know what the lyrics meant. I am like Jonathan in that I was only understanding 40% of the words which lacking the context made it mostly incomprehensible. I truly only understood the part about being thirsty, men det kan väl alla förstår! :)

The song is a funeral march. You can hear it even though Thåström slightly changed the rythm. The lyrics mostly reflect on our certain mortality through pictures of the funeral act, mythology/afterlife and decay, but also rememberance and farewell. The diseased person was someone in Bellmans circle of friends and drinking buddies.

I tried to translate the old Swedish to English In essence, he is in deep mourning at her funeral Mark how our shadow, mark Movitz my brother! Within the darkness is complete How gold and purple in that shovel Is replaced by gravel and rags Charon waves from his roaring river And three times also the grave digger too You will no more squeeze your grapes (meaning you will have no more drinks, that said to the dead woman who is getting buried) Therefore Movitz, please help me lay the grave stone over our sister (not really his sister but a drinking companion, many Swedes were more or less alcoholics then, even the smallest children were given brännvin with a piece of cloth drenched in brännvin and then put in the mouth, to keep them quiet when in church, or if the mother was too starved to have enough milk for the child) Oh desirable and hidden harbour Under these hissing trees Where Time and Death unites one beauty and one ugly to one dust To you envy never sought a path Happiness, how ever fast and agile Never hurries around the graves Armed enemy? Does not matter. He will piously brake his arrows Little churchbell clings with great bell’s deep chimes The church singer stands with a wreath by the church door And with the barking of the choir boys song Hallows this place The way up to the churche's grave adorned town Is trod ’tween yellowed leaves of roses Molting planks and stretchers Until the long and black clad row Bows deeply in tears Thus went to rest, quarrelmaker Löfberg, thine wife There, to the grass, no matter how much you, thin and gaunt, Stretches to look back She left the Danto bommen today (one of the toll posts you then must pass to get into Stockholm) And with her all joyfull gatherings Who will now order a bottle Thirsty she was, and so thirsty am I We are all thirsty

I love this song, but I wouldn't say it's tylical for Imperiet, it was more of a solo thing for Thåström under the same name. A fun detail is that the single (with blue bird) became such a success that Thåström moved from sweden and started making (well, 10 years later) heavy industrial metal to escape the lime light and main stream in sweden. More typical Imperiet songs would be Var e Vargen, Du ska va president, CC Cowboys and a butt load of others...

This is, I think, the best version of this song. Another really good cover in a similar style by Thåström is Briggen Bluebird av Hull. The original was written by Evert Taube, an popular song writer/singer among an older generation, now deceased. Taube performed this song himself, but Thåström nailed it. If you want something performed by Taube you might like Brevet från Lillan.

Notice how our shadow, notice Movitz my brother, within a darkness enclosing, note the gold and purple in that shovel there, exchanges with gravel and cloth. Charon Waves from his roaring river, and three times since the gravedigger himself, more thou thine grape won't squeeze. Therefore Movitz, Come help me to vault gravestone over our sister. The next verse is missing from the song but is part of the poem. Oh longings worth and away hidden shed, beneath the whizzing branches, where time and death a beauty and ugly, to dust unites. To you an envy seeked a path, happiness, else in flight so limber, never among the graves runs. Enemy there weaponed, what thinks well you? Breaks piously his arrows. The tiny bell chimes to the big bell's roar, leafclad stands the cantor in the archway. And by the bellowing boys prayer, hallows this place. The way up to the temple's graveclad stead, trampled between rose's yellowed blades(as in leaves), rotting planks and biers. Til unto the long and blackclad row, deeply bows down in tears. So go to rest from brawl and ball(the fancy thing not the sport thing), quarrel maker Löfberg your betrothed. There towards the grass tall and thin(as in width not as in barren), you still stares back. She from Danto Tollgate got divorced this day, and with her all fun folks. Who shall now the bottle order, thirsty is her and more thirsty am I, we're thirsty everyone. It's a really really a song that straddles the line between Vemod(literally feeling hurt but is a feeling of sorrow) and Melancholy. It's about death and alcoholism, and how despite the harm it causes us we still thirst for more, whether you're prim and proper or impoverished beyond belief, a respite that kills. I'll write the translated lyrics down in a better fashion in a reply.
@livedandletdie

See how the sorrow engulfs, the riches turns to waste, as death calls and you won't taste more wine. So let's raise the stone over or lost ones. We long for the day which in our grave lay, but we don't envy those who does, enemy or friend we all will grieve. To sounds of choir and bell, among the visage of the graves, we stand in black and stricken with grief. As we take our bow from the bouts of our lives, lives go on but still the bottle seek to quench the memories and our loss. See that's what I call condensing all of that sad stuff into a short form. Which is easy to read and follow.

Come along, join us on a hiking trip in the happy time of spring! Every day is like a golden bowl, to the board filled with wine. So drink, my friend, drink sun and fragrance, for the day is yours. " "Nu grönskar det i dalens famn, Nu doftar äng och lid. Kom med, kom med på vandringsfärd i vårens glada tid! Var dag är som en gyllne skål, till brädden fylld med vin. Så drick, min vän, drick sol och doft, ty dagen den är din." Bellman still lives in our culture.

Most Swedes don't understand the lyrics either, I mean it's modern Swedish, The Swedish language we all speak is from this time period when Carl Michael Bellman wrote his poems. Before that time, no Swede today could understand what was said, because just a generation or two before Bellman, Old Swedish which was untainted by German and French was spoken, and trust me, as someone who likes to study linguistics as a hobby, good glorious god is the words so different, and of course the letters a lot different. I mean back then æ was still part of our alphabet. Example.. aptananarsbilætir(Evening Pictures) compared modern Aftonsbilder.

Its a funeral. A woman has died, probably due to alcohol. And it is written in the typical language of Bellman. Maybe they spoke like that in the 18th century or maybe it is just his ways of writing texts, or rather poems with a melody. Some words I do not really think is the normal way people did spoke. There are lots of references to classic Greek things, like gods and stuff and the wording is quite eloquent.

An excellent choise but hard for a foreigner to understand. Not because of the words but because of the lack of knowledge about Bellmans life.

This is old swedish and I don't think many people, including me, understands all of it.. but it's basically about (from what I gather) a funeral for a woman who died under the hands of an alcoholic and abusive husband, so it's actually really sad.
@olleh2399
@olleh2399 Год назад
I belive she is his widow, her husband is looking on "long necked and skinny" perhaps meaning his skeleton is revealed when the womans body is interred. It seems he was abusive as he is characterized as a "quarreler" and Bellman is showing his disdain over the fact that she has to be buried in the same grave "where time and death unites the beutiful and ugly into a common dust" although imperiet changes the lyrics out a bit so it sounds like "She" looks back long necked and skinny, whereas in the original it is "you" refering to the husband. For many women at that time the death of the husband meant freedom, and as widows they were much more able to participate in society than as married women, so to Bellmans character she is in a way being led back to her chains which she had previously escaped. At least that is my interpretation.
