Amid Dispute Over Being 'Blindsided', Michael Oher Tells His True Story from Orphan to Overcomer

Former NFL star Michael Oher is making headlines this week with a lawsuit filed against the Tuohy family. He and the family were the subjects of the hit film "The Blind Side", but Oher is now speaking out against both on the heels of the release of his new book where he's sharing lessons learned from a lifetime of adversity.
Oher is known for being an overcomer. He beat the odds, rising from homelessness to achieve eight seasons in the NFL as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, the Tennessee Titans, and the Carolina Panthers until an injury sidelined his football career in 2016. With a father lost to prison, and a mother lost to drugs, Oher's orphan story is one many think they know.
"When I started this journey a long time ago, I was just chasing to be comfortable after I was done with football. My back was against the wall all my life. From the time I was three years old, my first memory was being homeless. Three to ten, I was in and out of foster care, shelters, on the streets," he told CBN News.

If u read his very first book, he said he knew of the conservatorship. He wants money, more money. He should at least be thankful for their help. The couple who helped him are already millionaires even before he came into their lives.

That’s just disrespectful. That family took that dude in and did everything to help him. Now that he is no longer playing football he is trying to sell a fake story and paint the family in a bad light. SMH what’s messed up is he completely contradicts himself in his book. This is a very sad situation anyone or everyone should be grateful he said it himself he wasn't the brightest and thoses people paid for him to have a tutor and that isn't cheap either. He was a young kid please be grateful for what you have and what they have given you.... Him saying it's not about the money then what it about your smartness or that you don't want your kids to know you had low scores. Who cares you were a kid that was saved from falling in the cracks of not having the best of parents. They say your dad was talented in sports yet where did that get him not many that are raised in the projects get out on their own... What a selfish, nasty man he is. He's earned over $34 million in his career. Partly because this family took him in, loved and supported him. He may not have become anywhere near as successful, without that help, at a crucial time. Basically the Tuohy told THEIR story, and made a few million. They are perfectly entitled to do that. Hollywood film companies NEVER tell the whole, correct story. That's a fact of life. His legal action smacks very much of greed, and selfishness, to me. I guess, helping someone at the age of 17 or 18, it's too late to change the morals, ethics, and appreciation of the personality, that's already been formed. He clearly doesn't need to sue them, unless he's blown the incredible wealth he's already come into. Shame on you Micheal.

He's doing a miservice to all those who might be helped in the future, due to his lack of appreciation. A man who believed he was ADOPTED to later find out he was placed in a conservatorship and what a conservatorship actually means deserves a chance to be heard without people ASSUMING he is the bad guy. It is concerning to me as a critical thinker that Mrs Tuohy has openly stated she adopted this man when clearly she did not!? Of course they did nice things for him as we all should do for others who need something that we can provide. That does not mean there is NO CHANCE he could have been exploited because he could have been!!!! It’s not unheard of! Movies are made for entertainment. Michael has said things about the movie bothered him for a long time. Now if he has legitimate questions about financial gains based on a book and a movie that WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE WITHOUT HIM - he has that right. Michael is making a cash grab and selling a book ... and hopefully a movie deal of his own. He’ll find out that The Blind Side made a lot of money for the studio and Bullock, and he’ll keep Mrs. Tuohy from using Michael for her foundation. I saw a similar situation where a family wrote a book (which was subsequently also made into a movie) about their son who had died from cancer. Much of the book covered the personal relationship between him and his girlfriend/wife. When I saw an interview with his widowed wife (he died shortly after they were married) I was stunned when she said she did not know anything about the book/movie. She had not been consulted at all. The movie seemed to indicate that she became a nurse to dedicate her life to helping others because of this experience and that he was her one true love. In reality, she was now happily married and had two kids. She actually seemed a little embarrassed to be blind sided (no pun intended) Clearly the parents of this young man had a very different perspective than the woman who was described in the movie. I wonder if there is a similar dynamic here.

He is entitled to write a book to try to make some money from his own story, so I don't have a problem with that, but if he was so all powerful and standing on his own and aged 18 when the Touheys came along, then why did he accept a home with them? There was absolutely no mention or reference of faith, or how this man's life was changed or affected by any faith-walk. I can go to any other station and find worldly news. Mr Oher is not being straight. Read his first book I believe was published in 2011. He admired he was not adopted but a conservatorship. He was never on his way to his dream on his own. His grades in school was failing grades he could never get the chance to get into college if it wasn’t for the Tuohy family commitment to help him. The Tuohy family were already very wealthy and didn’t need the money. Mr Tuohy was a very connected man and the Tuohys made this happen. Mr Oher admitted all of this. His case will be throw out. Why would CBN do this interview and not do their due diligence? All these comments and opinions and most is based off emotion and not facts. The Tuohy family is no where perfect but Mr Oher has a lot of pride and lacks honor to the Tuohy family. He believed he was adopted by the Tuoys. Even though adult adoption was available, the Tuoys told him that a conservatorship was the legal term for adoption, and the only option available to satisfy the NCAA's concerns (apparently well-founded) about this Ole Miss Booster family's arrangements with the sought after recruit that would allow him to attend there. He had scholarship offers from much more prominent football programs, such as Alabama, but was funneled by the Tuoys to their alma mater, as part of a "family" tradition. Sadly, he only thought he was family. Am adoption would have given him a claim to inherit a portion of the Tuoys'fortune. Instead, they tricked him into a conservatorship that gave them rights to HIS finances. In the book and movie deals, the Tuoys included their biological children, but excluded Micheal. Further, LeeAnn has made "adopter of Big Black Athlete" her entire identity, and the basis of her books and speaking engagements. She's been dining off that lie for years.
