Troubleshooting and repairing one of the Amiga 500s from the box of eBay Amiga debris I got. This one seems alright at first glance but hangs on booting most games and then resets into a green screen. Strange fault. Join me in the investigation. Includes piggybacking some RAM and recapping (this time with the original kind of capacitors) the whole board.

I did mention on my 500 repair vid that the CIAs can cause green screens! Shows you cannot always trust the error codes / colours on systems. Great job! Rule number one with 500 / 500+ / 2000 - always swap the two CIAs around, if behaviour changes, one of the CIAs is the culprit.

That's an oldie but a goodie. Few years back now mine started to get glitches on screen during some demos. So I swapped the CIA's and suddenly my floppy drive stopped working. Definitely a CIA death problem.

+Al VK2FVAX Yeah, should have swapped the CIAs for a start. But it's my first Amiga 500 repair, so I had to learn that first. And I'm happy with how this turned out anyway. Such lovely machines.

Indeed they are. I have much 'bigger' Amiga's pimped out in a variety of weird and wonderful ways. My A500 is my favorite for too many non-logical reasons :). We all started somewhere. My first time doing it I thought the guy that told me to swap the CIA's was smoking something. He was right.

You've come a long way in your Amiga repairs! Even back then, you still had a logical approach. You needed more learning about the Amiga, which you have done since then... Good work, Jan Beta!

Same happened to me with an A600. I had green screen from the beggining. It was a dry joint on chip ram. Nice repair as always.

It was interesting to see the piggyback RAM thing as I'd only seen such a thing before to do a RAM upgrade (specifically an Atari 520STm from 512K to 1024K), which I believe involved bending 2 pins on each 'upgrade' chip upward and running a few jumper wires across the upward bent pins to see them as additional banks of RAM. The 520STm (no built-in floppy) didn't have unpopulated additional RAM chip spots on the motherboard like the 520STfm did. I remember having to go to a few electronics parts shops at the time to find the 16 150ns chips needed for it. I wish I still had that machine because the guy who installed it did an amazingly clean job...like it was a factory mod or something.

As Commodore Engineer, green screen means address lines not up. It can be anything, normally its CIA, CPU or Agnus, most of the time it is the Angus socket it self. How the RS232 ic work in the Amiga if these chips blow up than overvoltage goes on bus. There is no way of testing for green screen, CBM tried everything to find a test for this.

hey, what do you think of these Rev.5 A500 boards turning the power LED completely off when the audio filter goes on/off, Jan Beta? I did an easy mod to two of my Rev.5 boards so they will instead dim the power LED (Like Rev. 6A and newer). Basically had to add a 100 Ohm resistor between emitter and collector of Q502. I found it more practical to just solder the resistor between the two corresponding keyboard connector pins at the bottom of the boards. I was not a fan of the LED turning completely off in many games, even though the machine is on.

What are the best replacement RAM chips to get that has direct compatibility?
@MindFlareRetro

Excellent. Another great repair video. I enjoyed the investigative techniques. The green screen had me thinking RAM too. Speaking of RAM, if I recall from my recent C64 RAM hunt, the DRAM part numbers ending in -10, -12, -15, etc, refer to the random access time (tRAC) of the RAM in nanoseconds (x10), so -12 would indicate 120ns DRAM. In these cases, I think the higher the number the "slower" the DRAM, because it specifies how long it takes the DRAM to find/access/retrieve a bit of data; the lower the number, the shorter the delay for the DRAM to return a result. That said, I don't think the A500 has an issue using either 120ns or 150ns DRAMs.
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 7 лет назад
+MindFlareRetro Thanks! Ah, okay. So the RAM timing is a bit more complex than I thought. I need to do some more research on that, I think. ;)
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro 7 лет назад
Yeah, I don't really think 120ns vs 150ns it's too much of a big deal. If I recall correctly, even mixing-and-matching is fine, but not 100% certain. Maybe +bwack, +GadgetUK164 or +iz8dwf could shed more light on this question. Guys? Are you there? On another note, Aminet has a decent list of Amiga memory testing tools that might be useful for future repairs, goo.gl/NqauZn. NOTE: Be sure to read the ReadMe files first before using.
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 7 лет назад
+MindFlareRetro That's a great list of tools. Might come in handy for the upcoming second Amiga 500 repair. I read a bit about the memory timings and must have found the -12 ones to be okay (can't find it now, of course). Would be great to get the experts' opinion as well. Not easy to find info on these older RAM chips anywhere.
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro 7 лет назад
Yes, I agree, info is hard to find. Hopefully, the above-mentioned gentlemen or any other retro computer repair experts can chime in on DRAM access time.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
Yes, you can mix OK - although I tend to prefer to stick to the same speeds where possible. Basically your only problem using different speeds on an Amiga is if you were to use a chip that is too slow. But typically most chips of that era work fine. Faster work, slower than 150 might not.

Great work Jan, when I started watching this I thought hmmm CIAs, I blew an 8520 in my A3000 years ago (like 20+) and had the same symptoms but great troubleshooting all the same. Much more methodical than me, all I know is those 8520s are fragile, maybe I hot swapped too many times back in the day. Hope you get a lot of fun from that A500!

Given that it's just a logic array, is it normal for the Gary chip to be stone cold during operation? I have a green screen on my A500, but all the signals to and from chip ram seem to be fine. The Gary chip is the only one that doesn't get warm, but I do get some signals out of that chip, and I figured if Gary goes bad, I'd get no screen color at all. In the meantime, I'll try swapping the CIA chips and see if that helps.

Hey Jan watched your video this morning because my a500 came up with a green screen every time i powered it up and no drive clicking. I just needed some inspiration. 😉 Strange enough that it worked a couple of weeks before.... After swapping the CIAs, cleaning sockets and reseating all possible chips it finally works again. My green screen was caused by the Agnus. After cleaning the socket and reseating the chip the issue was solved. So it seems that a green screen can be everything. 🙂👍

Ah, nice one! Glad you could fix the A500. :) I think green screen usually is a RAM fault and Agnus is responsible for addressing the RAM afaik so it makes sense.

Watching some of your old videos Jan.. very entertaining as always. I have a quick question.. at the beginning of this video one of the first things you did was replace the capacitors. You mentioned that faulty capacitors can cause weird issues. Would that also be true for an old LCD tv? I recently bought an old NEC LCD to use my c64 on because it had a svideo port. Unfortunately it seems to have issues. Fast moving images seem to be jittery plus it display artifacts when resetting etc. Could this be a capacitor problem?
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 5 лет назад
Definitely! One of the most common faults in LCD monitors is bad capacitors in the power supply or somewhere else in the unit. The other thing to watch out for is bad connections or dry solder joints.
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 5 лет назад
Also, some monitors don’t play well with the S-video signal from the C64 because it’s not really a standard s-Video signal. That might very well be the cause of the problems, too.
@chinosts
@chinosts 5 лет назад
Thanks so much Jan.. after watching so many of your videos I figured that a reoccurring issue with old electronics is leaky compactors but as the monitor was switching on and seemed to work ok I wasn't sure if that was likely the issue. I'll recap it first . Thank you so much for the quick reply. You are awesome.

Informative video. I have an A3000 that is showing a green screen, and I also made the assumption that the problem is in the chip ram. I will have the Amiga Analyzer, so I will check using that first, and then start pulling it apart. Because of watching your video, I will swap the CIA chips first, to see if they are the cause of the problem. If they are the same, I have a dead 500 and another 3000 with CIA chips to swap in and see if that is the problem. Bob

I have a A500 rev 6a, that is also giving me a green screen, or sometimes a garbled black screen. I tried the ram jumping, that didn't do it, tried reseating all the chips, and also had a few extra chips that it I have all but the 8370 fat agnus. When I trade the denise with the other, I sometimes get a grey then white screen. But the most visible problem is on the reset circuit, one of two of the resistors is so burnt that you can't read the values, the other is readable, I think but pretty burnt. It worked though even with the burnt resistors, maybe they just got so bad that it doesn't want to boot correctly, but there's no guarantee, worth a shot though.

I got green screen to my amiga today. I have read that it´s ram issue but is it ??? plz help what i need to fix what i need to replace.
@JanBeta
@JanBeta Год назад
Green screen usually means either a problem with the chip RAM or a problem with one of the CIA chips. Lighter green (as in this video) is CIA, darker green is RAM. RAM fault can be caused by the Agnus chip not making good contact in the PLCC socket, so I would suggest trying to push that in. Also try to push the CIA chips into their sockets again. In most cases I've seen, the problem can be fixed that way (especially since the sockets that Commodore used are very sub par quality). Real RAM faults are quite rare in the Amigas in my experience but they do happen, so it might also be a bad RAM chip.

Hi Jan, how did you hook up the Amiga to your monitor? I heard that the Amiga RGB to VGA conversion can be problematic because of the 15kHz signal it outputs. I am entirely new to Amiga and about to finish repairing the one I was gifted, and went with a Amiga to SCART cable that will arrive today. Of course, SCART isn't really my first choice but from what I read, it seemed to be the most probable way to get it to work. Can you give me a hint?
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 6 лет назад
For this video, I used the composite out from one of those A502 modulator boxes through a Ligawo composite/s-video to HDMI converter. The quality looks way better in the video than it is in reality. RGB via SCART works fine with most TVs, I think. There are solutions for VGA conversion that are supposed to work but I haven't tried myself. The best video output I ever saw is the Indivision addons from Individual Computers. I have an Indivision AGA in my Amiga 1200 and the output quality is excellent. These are quite expensive but you'll not get a better picture anywhere else I think.
@biggusbuckus8721
@biggusbuckus8721 6 лет назад
Since I don't have an A520, going with SCART still seems to be somewhat reasonable, I suppose. I have an original 1085S-Monitor, any idea if I could connect the Amiga to it? All the cables I can find say explicitly in their description that they only work with a 1084, which I don't have. Shame.
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 6 лет назад
For all I know, the 1085 is just a cost reduced variant of the 1084 so I'm pretty sure the cables for the 1084 should work just fine.

It looks like a rev 5 motherboard. Latest days I have been troubleshooting a rev 5. The error code was light grey colour pointing on the CIA's. But when I was looking further the Paula didn''t get any juice maybe because of filter 1 Ohm resistor EMI1301 (the same as E309 on rev 6) is not working. I have been comparing with a working motherboard and could see some strange Voltages. 5 Volt instead of 0,13 Volt. I will change the resistor and see if it's working.

Many times you can find faulty chips by touching them (top, not pins) while they're working, they will usually get very hot or slightly hotter than other chips of the same type. I've learned this from GadgetUK164, it was weird to me at first and I was like "What is this guy doing? Why is he touching all the chips? OCD?" but it makes sense, try it next time.

+discoHR I do that a lot on C64s (and I think I also did it before shooting the video on this Amiga). One of my standard things to do after visually inspecting things. ;)

The funniest thing I have probably seen was Jessa Jones face-desking the boards. She was checking temperatures with her face. Apparently it's more sensitive.

Angus is the issue not the cia, remove any addon HD, with power off lift system off the bench 4 inches and let fall. That trick I used a lot and charged $150 for back in 1991. Your welcome! You just need to reseat the chips, and restore caps of course. We didn't have bad caps and batteries in 1991.

Oh, in this case the CIA was the issue. Reseating the Agnus often helps, that's true.

How much does it cost to buy new CIA chips, if at all possible? Thanks!

I don't know a source for new ones but you can find plenty of used parts on eBay an the like. Prices vary a LOT though. Impossible to tell I'm afraid.

im too scared to play with my Amiga as spares are hard to get. thats why i emulate it on my nintendo WII.

That's a bit of a shame but I understand how you feel. I think it's more fun to play on original hardware. And spares (at least for the A500s) are not that hard to get/expensive (yet). Some other Amiga models are a whole different story of course. ;)

*Warning*. Piggybacking chips can be a useful technique but ONLY if there is no possibility of two chips trying to output different data at the same time, i.e. they need to have separate chip select/enable lines. This makes the method you used particularly UNSUITABLE for memory testing. If there is a faulty chip putting bad data onto the bus and the good chip tries to put out the correct data then there is a virtual short circuit across the power supply. Depending on actual conditions the results could vary from damaging the good chip to something much worse. If you suspect a memory error, and you still have programming capabilities, the first step should be to run a check program like you eventually did. If you don't have one handy, or it fails to load/run, a simple basic loop to write selected values (e.g. 00, 55, AA, FF) to each location, read them back and report any discrepancies will find over 95% of all bad locations. If the location is on a machine that splits the value over multiple chips (e.g. 2x4 bits or 8x1 bits) then a comparison of the values written/read can identify the actual chip at fault.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the information! Didn't know that (obviously). I'm going to be more careful in the future.
