Just stumbled across your videos and this is right up my street. I've recently got an Amiga to relive my Antics as a teenager. The things you show with the Action Replay were exactly the things I did myself :ripping stuff for use with my own creativity. Lovely view from your window BTW lol. Subscribed very enjoyable and quite enlightening to watch someone else doing the same stuff I loved doing too. Cheers 🕹📺☕

I keep forgetting to comment. Nice job on the video opener. I dug it. I had one of those back in the day. I'd forgotten all about it. Now I remember what a cool bit of kit it was back then. I spent so many hours tearing into games and stuff with it. Finding sprite graphics and mods in games and demos. I had so much fun with that cartridge. I miss those days.

Thanks for bringing this up, Maddy! Great video. I used and still have the ARMKIII. It is such a powerful disassembler and editor. It really gave me an insight into programming at the time, and of course gave me some extra lives when I needed them!

This brings back so many memories! Another cool feature of the Amiga Action Replay was Save State. I can't remember what they actually called it, but it really helped with difficult games. You could save the entire state of the game memory to a blank disk, and then load the game from that exact point where you saved it. I think it also had a quick save to RAM, so could save just before a difficult part, and then load from that exact point if you died. I seem to remember the commands SQR and LQR for Save Quick to RAM and Load Quick from RAM. But that was so long ago, I might be wrong. I had Action Replay Mk III. So I'm not sure about the features of the other versions. Action Replay on the C64 was awesome. It could freeze the game and you could view or edit save sprites. You could save the screen, or back up the whole game. You could enter pokes (cheats), kill sprite collision, find the the life counter and have endless lives, etc. It had utilities for copying, formatting and all kinds of things. It also had a reset button to reset the C64 without having to switch it off and back on. But for me, the greatest thing about it was the FASTLOAD. You could boot into FASTLOAD which made your 1541 disk drive load about 15 to 20 x faster than normal. It was a HUGE speed boost. The first time I heard that drive head stepping through the tracks so fast, it nearly blew my mind! It really was a total game changer, not having to wait ages for everything to load on that slow disk drive. Equally cool was the DOS wedge. It gave you much shorter and easier disk commands, and hotkeys. You could use the F keys (F1 - F8) to quickly list the disk directory, load, list and run games, and even run a machine code monitor. It just made using the C64 so much quicker, easier and more pleasant. The earlier versions had a fast load that was about 5 times faster than standard. But from version 5 and 6 (and possibly 4) it got _really_ fast! Like I said, about 20 x faster than standard. And you could even save games in a special format called Warp*25, with a Loader that would allow the game to load 25 x times faster, even for people who didn't have the cartridge. But it had some issues, so I was quite happy to "settle" for the normal FASTLOAD with it's 15 to 20 times speed boost! ;-)

So much fun! I used to have the MkIII with my A500. I’d use it to slow down Street Fighter II, screen grab Ryu one frame at a time, and then use Amos to control him with my joystick. Also, to cheat. The humble beginnings of my software engineering career!

When writing 68000 ASM this tool was a must as it allows break points in your code and what nots, you could see where your code was not doing what you wanted. I had the M2 which was bang on everything I needed to go along with Devpac 1.x, Dpaint 3, and sound/pro tracker.

The one thing I really missed when I upgraded from my A500 to the A1200 was the Action Replay MKIII, I spent many hours ripping mods and graphics, and discovering how to hack cheats and generally mess around with the contents of memory. I still have the Action Replay cartridge, but alas no A500 to plug it into, so it was nice to see one in action again.

This was an amazing piece of equipment and it is very interesting to see it in action. I don't know if the something like this can be done on current computers, but in the MS-DOS era there was an Action Replay for PC with that same controller the one for Amiga 1200 had. I missed you. I hope you're doing well.

Actually my ECS Amiga and my Amiga 500+ played Rebels Megademo and Wild Copper Megalo demo with the audiofilter ON by default, so on my ECS Amiga I could use Action Replay 2 to turn it off, but I couldn't do that on my Amiga 500+ coz I had to use the expansion port for my HD controller, and unfortunately I sold my Amiga 500 ECS together with my Action Replay 2, so I had to use an app called Degrader or something to turn the audiofilter off before I booted the demos. I remember my floppy disk drives constantly got busted for no obvious reasons, so I ripped all the modules and put them on my HD with EaglerPlayer, and now I got them all on my Phone with PulsarPlayer pro. I also made Tracker Music on the Amiga for 10 years, but 've only got them as modules on my old HD, and I haven't sampled them as mp3's yet. What a bummer. And the diskdrive's busted. Cheers! Xxx

The speed boost of the Action Replay FASTLOAD is incredible, if you don't already have a fast loader. It is significantly faster than the famous Epyx Fast Load cartridge, and has more hotkeys and features. Especially the later versions of Action Replay. You should check it out.

@MsMadLemon
@MsMadLemon 2 года назад
Just saw this, the question would be, unless you have the ACA500, how you'd connect a CF drive to the A500 :o) I've not tried to save to a CF card using the Action replay, as far as I can tell, unless the Action Replay cart recognizes the device drivers in the OS, which i dont think it would, it won't be able to access the CF. Again, i've not explored this before.
@threepwoodsthrifts
@threepwoodsthrifts 2 года назад
@@MsMadLemon Yes I have the ACA500plus. Yes that makes sense, it would be so cool if it could though as loading and saving things using AR would be so much easier and quicker!

Thing is, if you're bothered about using floppy disks, you can just use an external Gotek drive, save to an adf and then extract all your files from the adf.I guess that would be the next best thing.
@threepwoodsthrifts
@threepwoodsthrifts 2 года назад
@@MsMadLemon Yes thats what I do :). I have about 20 blank adfs per game. I do that to save my progress, one save fills one adf! Saving takes about 4mins, loading takes about 30sec.
