INTERESTING FACT: The "Hornady ad" photo appearing at 23 seconds.....the bearded gentleman to the far left holding an awesome shotgun is my great, great, grandfather. To the best of my knowledge this was taken in Tennessee in the late 1800's. It is one of my favorite archival family photos and I've been wanting to create an opportunity to include in a video.

@@berettaxd7566 I really don't care for Winchester ammunition. Their white box ammo kinda sucks, and they seem to have more recalls than anyone else. For a product as important as defensive ammunition, that's enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Mentally, I'd never feel confidence in carrying their products like I do with Federal/Speer, Hornady, Black Hills or even Underwood.

@bebop_557 2 года назад
Yes you are correct that the XTP was created with controlled expansion in mind (which is why hunters favor it as well). You can see that demonstrated in this video. "How does this translate to a real world target?" XTP bullets usually punch through the ribcage before they really start opening up. Wilson Combat XTP is a load I have no qualms using in .380, 9mm, .38, .357, .45, and 10mm. It's a hidden gem load that too few know about.

I carried .380 Hornady XTPs in my P3AT for over a decade. Great round with consistently adequate penetration and expansion in a challenging caliber. The XTP bullet (the cartridge loaded by Precision One) won ShootingTheBull410's .380 Ammo Quest. I switched last year to Underwood Xtreme Defender but would happily go back to XTPs if XD prices get any more ridiculous.

@@fullfire0 if you buy Hornady reloading dies, you get free bullets. As a result I probably have 1,000 XTP bullets. Picking up brass at the range, I have found around 300 Hornady shell casings. I separate them, inspect them, and then reload my self defense ammunition. I reload it to similar specs and use an actual XTP round to duplicate bullet seating depth so (God forbid) I ever have to use the stuff for self defense, no one in court would accuse me of “making k1ller bullets”. I have carried this ammo because its super reliable in all my 9mms. I can get it literally at any ammo place even during the pandemic. Yea, doesn't expand a lot, but ive got 34 rounds of it on me with dozens of replacement boxes at home. I do not feel undergunned with a glock 19 with 2 mags. Edit: its now may of 2022, and just bought a bunch more of this for $17 a box, not bad considering its 25 rounds and I bought federal Hydra shok DEEP 135 GR for $29 a box for only 20 rounds

Hornady's XTP was SPECIALLY designed as a 'deep penetrator', being designed to penetrate auto glass and thin sheet metal (car doors) and STILL expand. When I was an LEO, this was what I carried, regardless of caliber, when available. It is what I prefer today as an EDC load.

As always a great video. It's refreshing to see real organic gel being used. It's a far better indicator of bullet performance than clear gel as you can see a substantial difference in compared rounds. Too often we see clear gel tests in which different diameter bullets at very different velocities providing nearly identical results in the clear gel. I've always liked the XTP bullet for hunting as it is an accurate, reliable expanding and deep penetrating bullet.

Prior to the Covid Pandemic, this ammunition was not carrying a premium price. While not as inexpensive as Winchester White Box, American Eagle, Remington UMC and the like, it was available at attractive prices. Lots of friends stocked up on this loading, due to the proven XTP bullet and the reputation of Hornady. I am glad to see that this cartridge did perform with respect to velocity, expansion although moderate and penetration. The pass throughs are concerning in a defense type ammunition, but it’s a fine line and formulation to achieve optimum penetration without over penetration. If quantities could be purchased, even at the new “normal” prices, I for one wouldn’t pass this ammunition up. Thank you so much for testing. I really love that you chrono at different barrel lengths! I'd be interested if you did something like holding the bullet constant and gel-testing a shot with a 3" barrel, a 5" barrel, and a 16" carbine barrel. I've heard lore that a handgun bullet out of a carbine barrel is devastating, and lore that the extra velocity will cause an expanding bullet to separate and break up rather than expanding properly. So glad to have you back!

Gnarly penetration. Great expansion and weight retention. So many people are picky about shot specs, block specs, etc when life isn’t to spec and evert situation is varied. Thank you for these videos.

This is my favorite back up HP round for my 9mm got quite a few stacked up in storage.. My main go to round is 135 gr Critical Duty+P and my second is Federal HST 124 gr.... Fortunately I have more than 500 rounds of all 3 each.. After many many tests and practice its confirmed that these rounds all cycle perfectly in my Taurus G 3 fills size G2c and G3c subcompact... Btw good seeing you back this is by far the best ballistic news channel on the Tuber

This is why Tommy is “The Godfather” of ammo reviews. Another well executed ammo test validating an underrated defensive round. The xtp is well known for deep penetration and uniform expansion. Because this round does not expand as much as other defensive rounds it also does very well at standard velocities.

As always, and most importantly, I am delighted to see your outstanding videos . . . and this was no exception. Now, regarding the XTP, I believe it is an excellent defensive round, even in comparison to several more recent and more “fashionable” options. Why? First becuase of its reliability (the most critical criteria), then due to its superb accuracy (certainly crucial), and third due to its penetration and weight retention (penetration is more essential than expansion). The fact is, people love to see great “mushrooming,” but expansion is the least important of the four standards for projectile efficacy. And, XTP’s actually expands, perhaps not to the degree of other top-tier bullets, but appreciably. To summarize, it meets the four performance benchmarks very well.

Definitely seems to be reliable from what I hear. It seems to do very well with Fiocchis loading in .380 but everything else in self defense calibers it either partially expands, doesnt expand at all and always over penetrates which is great for hunting, not so great for self defense especially in the home.

@@brandonjordan2516 I agree with your post. However, accuracy, reliability and penetration are the most crucial projectile attributes. A lot of people don’t understand this, but expanding bullets are a relatively recent firearms innovation - and, in fact, most militaries continue to utilize non-expanding projectiles - certainly less than a century old. A lot of game, lot of enemy combatants, and a lot of criminals have been stopped with ball/FMJ ammunition. I certainly believe top-tier JHPs provide significant advantages, but projectiles including wadcutters and FMJs remain capable of doing the job . . . if the shooter does his. And XTPs are fully capable loads.

Thank you again SO MUCH for providing another great review with your reliable specificity, I DO appreciate it! I can see where having a mag filled completely with XTP rounds might be highly usable for LEO's in 'glass/winshield penetration' scenarios, or for a Car Carry sidearm for civilians in metro areas to counter Car Jackers (shooting through the window at the assailant), but my EDC ammo choice remains the 147gr Hornady HST +P (another great review you did ages ago): because of reliable penetration WITHOUT over penetration (no 'collateral damage' thank you); 9"-17" on average if I remember correctly (quite often these days my mind turns into a sieve without notice on some subject matter). I carry a CZ 85B, 4.75" barrel, all steel frame pistol and find it to be very reliable, though heavy (hey, the laws of physics cannot be obviated, so the heavy turns into recoil mitigation, which makes me happy) to carry. You look like you're healthy again (praise God for His blessings!) and I hope you're able to stay that way! I must congratulate you on the family photo historical opportunity: that really IS cool! Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
