Penetration and expansion test of the 9mm Hornady Critical Defense, 115 grain JHP. The ClearBallistics test block is comparable to 10% ordinance ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. The inclusion of denim is an IWBA protocol. Test gun is the Glock 19, 4" barrel.
Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Advertised velocity is 1140 fps. Chronograph velocities from the Glock 19 are noted in the video.

I really appreciate your reviews. The only thing I would like to see a little different would be tests out of a three inch barrel. That seems to be a more prevalent barrel length for concealed carry.

I shot this in my new G43 and it destroyed my target. No different recoil than fmj but it has a great punch. I wasnt too sure on this round but I trust this with my life. Great Round!

Ezra Henderson I cant say I agree on the recoil, I shot fmj then these side by side and these feel a lot less snappy compared to fmj... then again I was using a Glock 19... any 9mm outta a g43 is gonna feel snappy because it’s such a small platform

Tracy Clark I agree I like to see the ballistics in a smaller barrel gun cuz I think they're going to be very disappointing so you'd rather have something that's shooting at least 50 ft per second more cuz you're going to lose a lot more than that when you step down a couple of inches in the barrel...

This is my preferred carry round for my Smith and Wesson shield. When carrying my full frame Taurus 92 AF, I utilize hornady Critical Duty in standard pressure. Both really viable rounds. While these rounds do not expand like other ammunition, I prefer the fact that it is a more reliable expansion and that you do get good penetration. Penetration to me, is more important than expansion. Shot placement is key in stopping a threat and I want enough penetration to make it through barriers or bone. Hornady has really came up with a great round in my opinion. If you have a shorter barrel gun I would highly recommend the hornady Critical Defense for any 5 inch barrel going to Critical Duty is excellent.

What kinda job do you do that makes 7 perps want to break in your house?
@josephmeko6238
@josephmeko6238 9 лет назад
chris baker What's the God damn difference what he dose for a living, they just picked the wrong house to fuck with. Not all gang members are super brave as some people think, I think some do think about dying just like every one else, so they hunt in packs like wild dogs, hoping the other guy will get shot, any way they broke in and are now dead or near death. If you take the chance on going into some place you don't belong you could end up DEAD.
@xi5stargix
@xi5stargix 9 лет назад
"If you go into some place you don't belong you can end up dead." Well no shit buddy, that's common sense! My original question was meaning the most perps I've heard or seen breaking in a house was 4. Usually it's low like 1-3 guys or girls So 7 to me was pretty crazy. I'm not saying it isn't possible or can't happen.
@josephmeko6238
@josephmeko6238 9 лет назад
I do understand that 7 is really out there, and I don't think they made mention of the type of house it was. It could have been a nice place with 2 classy cars in the driveway. but it did say he was Disabled with a Walker, maybe they just thought it would be a easy mark, I guess you could say they were DEAD wrong. and good for him for taking out 7 all in one sitting.

Interesting request, but I don't see the value of that figure in this process. Besides, the shot, if it passed through, would have to be perfectly placed and not deviate it's path in order to pass through the chronograph. Modern hollowpoints are generally not going to pass through.

You just have to be aware of what is beyond your target and decide when to shoot if you have the luxury of making a move when you chose to do so. Otherwise I figure if someone is threatening or taking other's lives, a round or two over penetrating is the least of your worries. Even if it does hit someone else I can't imagine it's very likely to be fatal for them.

Thing I hate about Hornady is that they always inflate the velocity numbers on the box. It never achieves the stated velocity from common handguns. You have to subtract anywhere from 50FPS to 100 FPS to get close to actual velocity out of your handgun.

That's a good point. I use Critical Defense in my little Ruger LC9, and Critical Duty in my SIG, which has a longer barrel. I'll have to chrono the Critical Defense in both weapons to see how much difference there is, though. The Critical Defense, I'm told, has a faster-burning powder so that most of it burns while the bullet is still in short barrels, so a longer barrel may not make as much difference as shooting Critical Duty in different-length barrels would.
@TracyClark
@TracyClark 8 лет назад
I think it's the opposite. This round out of a shorter barrel would be slower and theoretically expand less - penetrate more
@JoannaJedrzejczyksForehead

@Dave67AZ

Not the tests Hornady did when developing the FTX round. Slower velocities result in more penetration because of lack of expansion of traditional hollow points. Critical Defense was specifically designed for shorter barrels because of this.

@jerrydonquixote5927

I like to see b238 but I carry better ammo than this and it half of these don't even expand in a Sig p238 that's why even the Second Amendment ammunition if you can find it is 1050 feet per second listed on the box so you're at least going to get the $950 standard ballistics of a 380 and I also like the Underwood 1300 ft per second with a 70 grain bullet out of the 380 small barrel 380 and Buffalo Bore makes one load that is not a grain bullet 1200 ft per second on the box so out of these little 380s you're getting about 1100 which is very very effective hollow point out of a small 380! Although I wouldn't shoot a lot of those Buffalo bore out of him I've shot a few to make sure they cycle properly and I'll probably never see the full box out of the gun I think that's just a little bit hot you can also tap a little of that weight out if you have a scale and make that money about 85 grains or something so it's not as hard on your gun but still highly effective!

I really don't like it I think that's a little like shooting for 9 mm and specially if you're shooting it in a 4 or under inch barrel you're going to be looking at 1050 and up ballistics and I like to get that out of my 380 and a three and a quarter inch barrel if I'm shooting at 9 mm I want at least get 1150 minimum but preferably 1200 ft per second or better I think it's just much better stopping power that low light loads is maybe a good load for someone that's recoil sensitive otherwise I wouldn't want it! Personally for 9 mm I like Fiocci 1200 ft per second jacketed hollow points for carry and practice!

The Hollow Point causes the bullet diameter to expand increasing the size of the wound channel (or hole) meaning it will make your target bleed faster which is ultimately what causes your opponent to drop (not the energy of the bullet as many beleive) So with a hollow point you get a bigger hole...this comes at the cost of penetration since the bullets expansion transfers more energy to the target than a Full metal jacket does.

These are such overrated rounds, both critical defense & duty. Overpriced too. All defensive ammunition should come in boxes of 50. Currently you can get Speer Gold Dot in 124 & 147 for 33 bucks a box of 50 over at global ordinance. They have HST too for 40 per box of 50. Buy a proven round that's cheaper than this gimmick stuff.

I had a round not go off in my edc gun glock 26 gen 4. It made me question this ammo. I was like if that was life and death, that wouldn’t have been good at all. I was carrying my gun on my dad’s property when a rattlesnake was almost stepped on by one of my dogs. I took out my gun aiming carefully and it went click. That’s not a good sound when you expect bang. I quickly racked the slide and then the gun fired fine. When I looked at the first rd there was clearly a regular looking dent in the primer. The round just failed to fire. Anyone else have any problems with this ammo? Should I just chalk it up to a fluke? I’ll tell you it shook my trust some in the ammo.

I find hornady to be my favorite in all my ammo for self defense but it's all opinion any type of hollow point can fail to expand.

Critical Duty is actually 135gr in 9mm but all Critical Defense is 115gr. The names can get confusing, haha.

I know it’s an old video but I came back to view it again. You don’t see the zombie ammo anymore these days. So it’s a bit of a collector’s item now.

you mean 22 or frangibile? and in either case bigger = better implies that 45 is the best pistol round, but most would agree that, at best, that is extremely debatable. anyway all i'm saying is there is so little info available on frang yet so many have such strong opinions about it based on nothing but conjecture. i'd like to see tn test some since he does a great job and i'm familiar with his testing from watching almost all his ammo vids. someone's gotta do it.

I never said energy means nothing. I said the energy transfer means little to nothing. Some .22s can be used for self defense but with all things the same the larger the round the better off you are. I haven't seen much testing, but I do know it does not penetrate into a pine board. My informal testing demonstrates to me that it would not be an ammo choice for me for defense/offense.
@ironcityblue
@ironcityblue 11 лет назад
i agree there is a, as you stated, *slight difference* between "defense" and "duty". but both designators are marketing tools. there's nothing wrong with that but i don't think we should be building one up to be significantly better than the other because of that. M&P is a suitable firearm for military and police. but that is still 100% marketing because so are countless other options. and i don't use either in question for duty or personal carry, though i'm not against either.
@ironcityblue
@ironcityblue 11 лет назад
there are many examples of identical penetration and expansion among rounds with significant energy differential. is it your contention that energy means little to nothing? if that's the case, all we need is 22LR FMJ that gets 12-16" penetration and we're good to go. and my point about frangibile still stands. while i'm not defending it, i'm willing to admit it might be a poor choice for SD/HD, if you admit you don't know because you haven't seen much or possibly any testing. why not test it?
@09jisaac
@09jisaac 11 лет назад
I challenge you to show me anything I said that was incorrect. It is not the energy transfer that kills with a .50 or an 8 ga, it is projectile(s). The "stretch cavity" is the temporary wound channel. Most handguns don't stretch the tissue past their limits. This means that the temporary wound channel effects little. Typically hydrostatic shock is the result of a rifle. Handguns do not usually have the energy to produce hydrostatic shock.
@ironcityblue
@ironcityblue 11 лет назад
Although I think we are talking about different things, what you said was not correct. Energy transfer is extremely important. You can shoot a 50 BMG or an 8 gauge standing up and not be knocked down. Does that mean they don't have "stopping power"? That's not what I'm talking about. Energy transfer is crucial for wound channel, permanent and stretch cavities and hydrostatic shock, all of which play a major role in defense. So what's the harm in testing it to see how it compares?
@09jisaac
@09jisaac 11 лет назад
I have shot thousands of handgun rounds in my life. If energy transfer matters much then I would be dead. The shooter receives as much energy as the target does every shot. Energy transfer, within itself, matters nothing. People place great importance on the temporary wound channel but, with most handguns, this does not exceed the normal elasticity of the tissue. FMJ would perform better than frangible ammunition.
@ironcityblue
@ironcityblue 11 лет назад
Energy still matters, and its not like frangibile disappears into a cloud of baby powder as soon as it hits the first layer of demin. I'd bet it still has plenty of penetration; its still metal after all. If it does come dramatically under commonly accepted penetration parameters, then the would channel would likely be incredible. Then there is the issue of FMJ only areas due to (messed up) laws. It could be a viable option for some, and either way it would be good to finally see some data on it

Wellp, I got to look for more defense ammo now. My local place had 50 round boxes of Critical Duty I wanted to buy, but I didn't get paid in time. Went out there and bought a box of this stuff in my 3 month span of scouring the planet for defensive ammunition, and now I am a little upset. The only other ammo they have is a 20 round box of Federal Low recoil HP, and some weird 20 round boxes of 95 gr pure copper HPs. =/

ok, so, with the red flex tip keeping the "material" out of the bullet traveling through the block, it still expands like a bullet withouth the tip, even bullets that have filled up with jean material. I watch a lot of your videos, but maybe not all of them from years ago, do you ever have a premiunm self defense/hunting round not work properly because of the denim hindering its performance? thanks for the great vids!!!!!!!
@Munky332
@Munky332 11 лет назад
Hollow points expand, dumping the energy into the target. FMJ's just pass through. would you rather have a bullet that could travel beyond your target and hit someone/something else? or stop inside the body of the target? on top of that, the expansion causes more tissue damage and the increase in diameter can increase the chance of hitting a vital organ. if you dont hit a vital organ, chances are that the target will live unless they bleed out.
@174wolf
@174wolf 11 лет назад
While "normal" ammo does feature better penetration, that's not always perfect. Though the risk with .45ACP is lower than with others, it might overpenetrate more. A hollow point, as it expands inside the target, will provide much greater shock and not leave at all, or with much less energy left. This also makes it more suitable for self-defense in populated areas - it reduces the risk of penetration the target completely and harming a bystander.

I loved that nice, big temporary wound cavity. That would stop me in my tracks.
@09jisaac
@09jisaac 11 лет назад
I meant frangible. I never said that bigger = better, I said that with all things the same bigger = better. Everything isn't the same. Also, .45 is far from the biggest projectile. A .50 is bigger. You should probably read all my comments twice before you reply, as you are getting information out of them that I have never said.

That's a good point. No disrespect intended. Heck, I agree more than I disagree, since I carry ATK (Speer and Federal) products and not Hornady. Hornady lost a LOT of credibility with me in the marketing-over-substance department when they started marketing bullets people might use to defend their families as "Zombie" bullets.
