From Lollapalooza '10, the beginning of a recent string of U.S. performances for X-Japan, the visual kei band from... Japan. Among the extras in this piece are Yoshiki's thoughts on using a hologram of deceased band member Hide, the band's influences and why he thinks they can make it in America where past efforts have not been successful.

He can totally make it. If America doesn't embrace him then it's an idiot and blind to this man's genius. I am hoping and praying they go on tour soon!

Could sense the sorrow Yoshiki felt when he was talking about hide.

It's nice to see a band where the drummer is the mastermind. I myself am a guitarist, but I know plenty of musically brilliant drummers and Ive never really supported the whole "drumming's not real music" thing. I'm kinda excited to discover these guys, but nervous that, in 2014, I can't buy their new album... Plus, can we just talk about how this guy bought a studio right out from underneath Metalica? He's one of my favorite people just for that

To Dan Harris, firstly, its YOshiKI not YOshiki. Secondly, I've played classical music, in an orchestra, and it's pretty obvious how similar heavy metal music is to it. X Japan's music, if you have an ear for music, you'll see is simply classical music that Yoshiki wrote out on the piano, and then transposed it for guitar. He has basically said that he writes this way. Then he'd hand the band their parts to learn. If you transposed the guitar parts and bass parts for violin and cello, you'd think you were listening to classical music. In a translated interview I read, Yoshiki handed the band their parts that he'd written out, and PATA looked at it and said "What the fu*k?!" It sounds in solos like they may just be shredding or improvising, but they're not. Every solo is written out (mostly by Yoshiki) and learned by the band.

Don't forget on October 11, X Japan are coming back to New York and for the first time in their career, they are performing at the World's Most Famous Venue, the Mecca. Madison Square Garden. I expect it to be a huge success at MSG. Like 21,000+ people rocking out to X Japan and make their big impact for the USA to be recognized. The Asian Invasion needs to come take over the U.S by storm. We've already had the British, Australian and Canadian Invasions. And now Japan's most successful rock band needs to make a major impact on American culture.

Raymond Bermea I agree. I was at the MSG show and it was amazing, of course! :)

Metal and classic music not a obvious combination are you kidding!!!

Chepe Beto Exactly. He's probably someone who doesn't listen to any music but if someone asks what he listens to, says "classical" so he'll have something to say. If he listened to classical and listened to even one metal song, he'd be able to hear the similarities. It's the same thing, with different instruments and a vocal attached.

If they wanna make it, they better start putting out new work first. Where is that album that was supposed to be released this year? I have been a fan of theirs since I lived in Japan in the 90s as a kid and I am still waiting. Had hide not died, he would have made it here big by now, because he was producing work. Don't get me wrong, they are still my favorite band.

"He has become the face of the band." He was always the face of the band. It's his band and he is the bandleader. Every member is important and a fantastic musician and plays an integral role, but without Yoshiki, there is no X. Yoshiki is X, and X is Yoshiki. Amazing how he found the perfect musicians to play his music though. And contribute great works as well (Hide & Taiji mostly).

I always felt like X Japan's musical style were three legendary rock bands, Scorpions, Poison, and Guns N Roses. Because they had so many powerful ballads.
