Amsteel Blue Eye Splice for my Beast Stick Rope MOD, I will show you how I did it and determined the size of the eye to get a tight fit.. This MOD is awesome and resulted in my Beast Sticks coming in at 1lb 13.6 oz. Can't beat that.
Rope is from Dutchwaregear link is below if you want to pick some up:

This was one of the most well explained tutorials on splicing. I had a little difficulty stuffing the end into an 8mm knitting needle....thinking a 10mm might work a little better,....I might try to flare the cut end of it.

If you leave two inches between the passes then bury as much as you want, you will have a tight eye that will open to go onto the button and self closes when any tension is applied. Works either way..

Anyone wanting to do this- 9mm knitting needles are at Joann fabric. Might save someone some aggravation-it’s impossible without the right one.....don’t ask how I know
@bucks2beards194

It's easier to use a fid if you taper just before you milk the rope over the bury. Tapering at the beginning makes the ends much more flared

Thanks for the video, very helpful. Where are you getting your amsteel rope? Can the Amteel ATV ropes be used and cut the hook off them?

Hey Mark, really enjoy your videos, very easy to follow, understand. One question: I am a bigger guy, would it be better for my rope mod to be 7/16 Amsteel versus 1/4, would it have more "holding" power? appreciate your help
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 3 года назад
First off hope u had a wonderful Christmas and thanks for watching the video. I think the 1/4” is plenty, it’s minimum break strength is 7,700 lbs and only cost .90 a foot, the 7/16 break strength is 21,500 lbs and cost 2.25 a foot. Ur stick is probably only rated for 300 lbs, so 1/4 should be plenty strong
@arthurcarstens
@arthurcarstens 3 года назад
Appreciate the response Mark, I worded my question wrong, I know the Amsteel is plenty strong, but would 1/4 inch lock in tight enough for a big guy, would a larger diameter rope lock in any tighter? also, do you double cinch the rope on the button?
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 3 года назад
@@arthurcarstens It locks in tight with the beast button, sometimes actually hard to get off.

Mark - Have you seen any comparisons of 1/4 Dyneema winch rope vs. 1/4 Amsteel for securing climbing sticks? You can't put a price on safety, but I like to save money where it's logical. Just curious. Thanks.

Have you done any vids comparing the amsteel rope mode to something like a mini-versastrap mod? If not, any brief thoughts you'd like to share? I'm either going to cut my heliums down or buy beasts, and will either do a rope mode or the mini versa. Thanks.
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 4 года назад
+MrShysterme I like the mini versa.. but sometimes I struggle to get the loop over the button because it just made that loop.. the rope mod I don’t have to worry about that and it doesn’t move ...

Nice! Do you have an idea on when you will post the next video? I am planning to do my amsteel rope mod this weekend and was looking for a way to handle the tag end. I kinda thought about just running the bungee cord through the gap in rope and burning the end really good so that it wouldnt fray but your way looks a lot cleaner.

When you cut the length of amsteel how do you keep the non looped end from fraying? Bury in into itself?
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 3 года назад
When I first did them I bury'd it into itself and then put the shrink tube on it, that was a lot of work with that short piece. After that I ended up melting the end and putting shrink tube over it and used some small zip ties since that really isn't a lot of pulling on it.

I keep being told 1/4” is too small and won’t cinch and need to use 7/16”. Have you had any problems with them staying on the tree and not slipping

What length do you start with and what length do you end with for each rope? Wondering what a good length is for each stick without having a ton of extra every time
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 4 года назад
I usually order 10' per stick. I go crazy and bury 12" back into the line... They come out about 8'7"....They are long, but I just do it to all so I don't have to worry which stick I grab should i need that long rope at the base of the tree. The elastic rope at the end helps secure the loose end once they are set.

@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 4 года назад
Jesse , Good morning .. the knitting needle in this video I believe was a 9mm .. I cut it at a 45 degree angle and it’s now 9” long... my next smallest needle is 6.5mm cut st a 45 degree angle and it’s 10” long. My ropes are 8’ long ... to make one that long and to clean up the end like I did in the other video u need a piece of Amsteel about 9’ to 9 1/2’ long.. hope that helps .. if u have any other questions please let me know and thanks for watching and reaching out .
