The Royal Palace used to be the City Hall, a showpiece of the Dutch Republic. During Napoleon's occupation his brother king Louis Napoleon took it as his palace. When Napoleon was beaten, the British decided it needed a buffer monarchy between France and we got a royal family which kept the palace. It's used as a ceremonial palace and for hosting foreign guests. They haven't figured out how to clean it without damaging it. A lot of buildings in Amsterdam lean forward by design, because the trading goods would be hoisted up. Because the soil is soggy the houses are build on wooden poles, but those rot when the water level in the soil drops and lets air in.
@Marlboro Light hey, not needed as I am vaccinated. So no test needed if you are. If you aren't then you do need to do a PCR or Anitigen test officially to travel. Just in case look up your local government website for more travel information.
@@robdegast3612 Thank you! Yes it sure is. I was actually pleasantly surprised by it. I lived so long in the Czech Republic but never went there but I can definitely recommend it to people.
the forward-leaning of the houses is mostly a planned feature. It prevents bumping and bouncing against the walls while hoisting goods up or done. A lot of these house were actually storagefacilities when constructed a few centuries ago. And mostly the roads/pavement sank over time, and not the houses(they were build on tall poles and are floating, very stable in the soils).
7:05 There'a bull like this on Wall Street, in the City of London and one in Asia, probably Hong Kong or Tokyo. Sign of a financial powerhouse. The building in the background is the old exchange, Beurs van Berlage. They downsized, trade is done by computer. 7:35 The Dutch commemorate on the 4th of May, they celebrate on the 5th.
Such a classic building structures! Will never go out of style. But are they safe over a long period of time?Hopefully next time you visit Amsterdam, there will be tulips around! - O
Yes these buildings are highly regulated and inspected so they are safe. And tulip season in the Netherlands is usually form late March till late June. So who knows my next visit could be in those times.
@@TheDistantExplorer yes G-Star is a dutch brand even snoop dog knows now. He has a big commercial video witch is very popular wright now in holland.. Haha
Please ignore the rude comment posted by a certain "B". I don't want to give that any extra attention, so I did not comment there. There are weird people everywhere and this is one. I liked your commentary on Amsterdam, and will watch part 2.
Thank you and much appreciated! Unfortunately there will always be people who don't like you content and that is absolutely fine. Even their comments are fine to me. it's a freedom of speech we all have on the internet and its the risk by putting my videos public to everyone to see, although I always hope that people enjoy it, even if it is just for a little bit!
Yes I remembered that later on again. I personally think even though the train network is great (not talking about winter) its pricing is really steep. Unfortunately that's the result of not being part of the state anymore.
I might be, or not at all. One thing is for sure I lived in The Netherlands for some years. Who knows I might reveal my nationality one day and you could have been right all along !
@@jaccovalkenburg79vdaal Maybe I am just very proud of that city as I actually lived in The Hague for multiple years. However as a hint. Most my life I've actually not lived in The Netherlands ;)
Very strange comment, never said I overall don't like it. There are things I don't like and other things I do like. But that's with every country unless you wear patriotism glasses right?
