I own a Polo GT TSI with DSG gearbox and a Honda City with CVT gearbox, so some observations :1) To a great extent it depends on the power/torque of the engine. The transmission can do only so much. The DSG has the ability to do lightning quick shifts so you can out-accelerate slow moving cars. Again, the Polo GT has 105 BHP and 175NM torque, that helps a lot. Plus it has the sport mode to utilise all of it, and traction control. Coming to the City, while the CVT may have a rubber band effect on straight roads, the City's overall engine size (1500 cc), power (119PS) helps mask some of it. On the hills, the CVT is actually quite advantageous because when you raise the rpm, the wheels are immediately "loaded" with the power since it is an uphill slope. There is no loss of efficiency that is associated with a clutch disengage/engagement like a manual transmission. In fact, to some extent its better than an equivalent DSG gearbox (my personal experience). ii) The bigger problem on ghat roads are slow moving trucks which obstruct the view of the oncoming vehicles. But you can get past them easier in automatics. iii) It is important to do some engine braking on sharp downhill slopes. The Polo DSG allows you to use Sport mode or manual mode for hill descent, but its not a full manual. It will take over automatic control if the gearbox is strained beyond a limit. The City CVT offers paddle shifts and better engagement of the virtual gear ratios for engine braking. Overall, driving automatics in hilly sections is quite engaging IF your car has adequate power.

If you buy maruti amt with hill hold features, you won't feel a thing. It hold for 8-10 seconds even in the steepest hills. But other amt without hill hold assist will. Make problems specially when there will be bumper to bumper traffic in incline. You must use handbrake in that case otherwise your car will roll back. For cvt mode automatic, car remains steady in slope. So no worries. For dca also, car has hill hold. Even modern day Tata cars with hill hold assist like Tata nexon is not that good to hold the car. It also has a rollback of 6 inchs. I am. Using swift as well as Tata punch amt. I have peace of mind driving swift on inclines as it never rolls back. But puch does role back 6 inchs on small inclines then picks itself up to drive forward even without hill hold. But failed to do so in steep incline. No issues with swift even is high inclines. Hope you got the idea
