AMT Plymouth 71 Duster 340 build update #1
Here’s the first build update of the 71 Duster. I got almost all the parts ready for either primer or paint. I will be using Vallejo’s US Navy Gray primer and all Tamiya’s acrylic paints. So far the detail in this kit is amazing. I will be priming and painting everything sometime this week.

Thank you very much. I'm going to have a hard time making it dirty. I can do it to military stuff, but cars. . . Cars I've always done showroom with just some minor weathering on the chassis.

looking forward to your build. my dad had a blue 1973 duster that he had shipped to germany in 1975 while we were stationed there. i bought this kit to build one like it. I remember him racing my german grandfather and his honda accord on the autobahn. haha. his duster had rear half of roof white vinyl top. never saw one like it again. we left it there when we left in 1979. a tip on those molding lines on ridges or hard to get to areas, if they're not to big I use the tamiya thin cement on them and it dissolves them after a few brush strokes. happy building!

Thanks for watching. I'll bet it was a rush to fly a 73 Duster down the Autobahn. I've never seen one with a split vinyl. That had to be cool. I'll remember that tip. I sure could have used that last night. Thanks again.

Hey Mark, Go to Lowes and buy some metal vent tape. I find it works just as well as the metal foil. I was even able to polish it up some to make it look more realistic. One roll will last you a lifetime.

great video. it's making me want to get into my 3 duster kits. 1 as a beater daily driver like how you describe you are building. one as a well kept daily driver. and the 3rd as a show and go car. the show and go i'm planning on trying to do a true fire type paint scheme but with clear browns, tans, and oranges as well as fine gold flakes to turn it from true fire to a dust storm type paint job. keep up the great work.

Grandpa you are what keeps me motivated to go home and work on my kit after a long day of work. I built this model my senior year in high school, and it was one of the best I had ever done. As much as I hated to give it away, my brother-in-law would always comment on it whenever he would see it on display so I gave it to him only to have it knocked off shelf a few years later. I love your creative ideas and thinking of different scenarios in order to figure out how you are going to build your kit. For example, a young teenager who has a beater and is slowly starting to fix it up. Thanks for your hard work and dedication. Also, I do have a question. What has really knocked the wind out of my sails is that I am struggling with my airbrush. I struggle with the finish that I am ending up with. I am not sure if it has to do with me over or under thinning the paint for Having too much or not enough air pressure. I try to do like you and I have seen others do and paint plastic spoons before I paint any parts. The only paint that I have got to spray and been happy with the results has been testors enamel. That is all I used to use as a kid, but I try to stay away from the enamels due to the long cure times. The paint that I have been using and having trouble with has been Tamils and I thin them with Tamia thinner usually a 50-50 mix or 40 /60, 40% paint 60%thinner. I am using a .03 needle and I have tried anywhere between 15 and 20 pounds of pressure. I have even tried adjusting the flow on my airbrush to see if that makes a difference and if I open it too much, I get splatter. It almost looks as if the paint is drying too quick, as if I am using a water-based acrylic. By the way, I am not using the Tamia lacquers, they are the solvent based acrylics. Also, I’ll have been using either semi gloss or gloss. I just cannot achieve that nice smooth glossy shiny finish. I am sorry for leaving such a long comment. You responded to me once before on a previous video and told me to email you but I could not find that previous conversation with your email. Otherwise I would have just sent it to you there.

Thank you very much. I'll be totally honest with you. Airbrushing to me is some kind of Voodoo magic alchemist thing that I just can't seem to get good enough to have any authority on. Here's a link to the video I watched just before I did my 32 Ford. It was like night and day on how my paint went down. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CZNIIMteKsU.html He is the person you want to watch. When I watched his video it was like a light came on and I kind of understood exactly where I was messing up. I only had to change my air pressure, the mix I was doing, and the distance and speed I was doing it. LOL Basically I am re learning everything I thought I knew. So give him a watch and see if it doesn't help you out. Let me know what you think. If I get a good spray on this car I'll be asking him if I can put his link in all my build videos.

@@grandpamarkshobbies Robert is the first person I found on RU-vid months ago when I got back into modeling. I have watched almost all of his videos, even the one specifically showing how to spray Tamiya Acrylics. The guys is a wizard! He makes it look so easy. I know it’s going to come with a lot of practice. I just hate the cleaning process. Having to do it multiple times in a row. Trying different mixtures of paint/thinner. I’m gonna order me some airbrush ready paints to see if that makes a difference. If it does then I think that will tell me my mixture is wrong. Thanks again for your response and keep on doing your thing. I love you guys. I can’t tell you how excited I get when I see my subscription bell lit up when I check my phone. Looking forward to the next video.

He sure is a Voodoo master. . . Last time I painted I used his mix formula and air pressure and it worked perfect. I think the only thing I had to do was drop the pressure just a bit. Thank goodness for plastic spoons. LOL I still don't think I have a clue on the subject what so ever.

I sure can. I didn't strip them, I'm going to use either flat aluminum or a light gray for the centers and leave the outer ring alone. I may even try to do mix some Tamiya flat with Quick Shine and see if that works.

Wow. That makes it rough. I try and save all my extra parts just for tests or to replace anything that may fling across the room into Narnia. I've used the bigger pieces to do the same thing before I learned about the spoons.

Do you sand your body before priming or painting
@grandpamarkshobbies
@grandpamarkshobbies Год назад
I do. I start out washing everything in a 9 by 13 plastic container with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Then I rinse with warm clean water and dry everything off. Then I go around the body and get rid of the mold lines. Then I sand it all down with 3000 grit sandpaper.
