+Kendra Marybeth Davenport That is because the P42DC and P40DC is the most powerful diesel locomotives Amtrak has, and they are equipped with 4,250hp. Originally the P40DC had 4,000hp but Amtrak decided to uprate the horsepower to what the P42DC's had. I love them, but they have millions of miles on them, and Amtrak will retire them by groups by this year or 2017 to let the "Chargers" come in. All the P42's are nearly as old as I am as I was born late 2000 and their first year of service was 2001. I will miss them :'( I haven't heard what they will do with the P40's and they have been in service since 1992, but Amtrak is retiring P42's first? I find it interesting :/

Those westbound trains have to go over the mountains too. Auto train just goes along the flat east coastline

The Southwest Chief also has to get over the cajon pass so that makes a gigantic difference... Florida is for the most part relatively flat.

Given the Auto Train doesn't go over steep grades...

The autoracks don't need HEP either. That's partly why freight trains can be so much longer than passenger trains.

I forgot how much HEP eats up a locomotive's power...

@@InventorZahran Back in the days of Amtrak providing mail service, it wasn't uncommon to have three or four P42s on the California Zephyr, Southwest Chief and Empire Builder.

I thought they were p42s. What's the difference besides the numbers?

I live here. It's that bad where they can't get a 1000ft passenger train through

16 superliners and 20-30 autoracks make the autotrain. Yes that 4000ft long train is alot of the P40's it does have a cost. those engines take a beating from what I hear from Amtrak Employees

The Auto Train has 6 engines, 814, 818, 830, 831, 832 and 835. there are 16 other P40DC's in service around the country mixed in with the P42's

+ Torice Sullivan, If is a mighty big word when it comes to 98. There have been times when 91, 97, and 98 were all at Orlando at the same time. 98 had to wait to get into the station till 91 and 97 got out of the way. That day 97 beat 91 to Miami by a long stretch. Between Jax and DC 98 does make up time and often gets in to DC early even if late passing Jax.

we got lucky. I saw when dispatch put 52 on track 1 to keep him moving and allow 98 to leave the station and we were at the right pace at the right time

+Torice Sullivan Yep, you got lucky. There have been times when 98 & 52 and 91 & 53 have been along side each other on double track. And some times the AT wins.

Mike McKay I live in Fayetteville, NC and I've seen Silver Meteor PO98 and Auto Train PO52 30 minutes of each other. PO98 was abut 2 1/2 hours late though that night, but if it had been 3 hours late, PO52 may have gone ahead of PO98 since it goes straight to Lorton, VA while PO98 stops at the station. But then again, I don't know what has higher priority, but Auto Train doesn't stop so I would think PO52 would. With one exception if PO98 was really late then PO52 would go before PO98 before getting here, and I've seen PO98 about 2 times, 6 times in my life time, and PO52 3 times.

+Captain Justice last time i rode the auto train, we caught up to po98 in jessup,ga. we again caught up to it in Savannah,ga. they held us on the mainline while 98 was working the station. after he departed,we were on the move. but his speed limit is 79 while ours is 70 due to the auto racks, so of course he gains ground on po 52.

Mike McKay Yeah that I know. Kinda wish the Auto Racks could go up to 80mph, but I'm not a Mechanical Engineer, yet, to know how to fix that. And also I'm not sure if that would save money or it would be for nothing. I've never rode the Auto Train, but one day...I will..

+Jesse Bains Amtrak would actually like to have Auto train service from... Chicago to LA, Chicago to seattle, & LA to FL. however on the law books its stated that the freight railroads actually own that service and the name and only allowed Amtrak to take the DC to FL route when Amtrak was created. When Amtrak tired to expand that service in the 80s the freight railroads denied them service on there rails, which brings us to why we only have 1 Amtrak auto train service. Amtrak has tried but was shot down on there request you need to get some smart people in DC to re-write the laws so amtrak can expand that service just under a different name and make sure the freight railroads cant object to it.

+buddah bless I've also heard that the freight company's wouldn't want Amtrak to have the auto train to go cross country because the freight company's would loose money since moving auto is such a good way to make money like for rental car companies and things like that. I hope I explained this good enough

While i wait to board the train in Sanford,po 98 will pass by.on the southbound trip, po 91 will usually pass while waiting to get my car.

They were ahead but not by that far. The crossings left by 98 stayed down for 52. Though 98 is running 79 while 52 is running only 70, 52 will likely never catch 98, unless held up at a stop in a station like Savannah, but dispatch would likely line 98 out and 52 would just stop on the main waiting on 98 to come out

Torice Sullivan Not the way it has happened with us. :) 98 has to make station stops, 52 does not. 52 normally only has one stop at Florence for fuel and crew change. Watch the trains on Amtrak's train tracking website and you'll see the two running on each others markers if in single track and 52 passing and getting into the lead on double track at times. All depends on what the dispatcher does. Tonight 98 is ahead of 52 and should get to Richmond before the AutoTrain does. 98 is running 37 minutes late. I'm never that fortunate on it. Diner opens for breakfast at 0730 on 98. If the train is late enough, I would get a free breakfast. Same thing happens on 91 and 97 in Florida southbound. Whichever one gets to the Auburndale turn and gets the trackage right gets into Miami first. Last trip south the crew of 97 just lost out to 91 as 91 hit the interlocking before we did. I've been on 98 just south of Orlando when both 91 and 97 were in the station. 97 got in first that night. From Richmond VA, it is a bet if 91 or 97 will get to Miami first even though 91 hits Richmond 4 hours ahead of 97.
