Amy Johnson CBE was a pioneering British pilot who was the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia. Flying solo or with her husband, Jim Mollison, she set many long-distance records during the 1930s.
She did this in a variety of aircraft but she was probably most famously known for her first, a Gypsy Moth she named 'Jason'
At the onset of World War Two she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) where she would deliver planes to airfields for the RAF. During one of these flights she drifted off course and crashed into the Thames Estuary. Amy managed to parachute out of her aircraft, but what happened next is still shrouded in mystery

Brilliant story and amazing woman! Being shot down as she didn’t have the right code (or the other person had the wrong code ) seems the most logical unfortunately 🥲

Thank you so much for this short documentary of Amy Johnson, she had been over shadowed by the story of Amelia Earhart. The world has to know her story as well… how she also pioneered in women’s independence and amazing skills that men usually dominated during her time.

Amy, Johnny- she was such a badass. That attempt with a open air cockpit is nuts, that's like kayaking across the Atlantic ocean. Amy and Amelia Earhart are so inspiring and I like their style. They're driven and risk takers, boundary breakers.

That’s a beautiful statue. It really captures her essence, the joy in life she must have had as she is shown smiling, striding forth to her next adventure. Thanks for reminding us there were others besides Amelia. Thanks too, for giving a shout out to our home boy, Bert Hinkley. His too is often a neglected story. PS, off topic but can’t resist…if only the person responsible for the recently unveiled monstrosity supposedly celebrating Princess Diana had taken a few lessons from the sculptor who gave us such an evocative depiction of Amy!

I never knew about her until today, but although my knowledge of her is limited, I am convinced that is the best statue to actually capture a person's essence. It conveys so much movement and joy! BTW, I looked up images of Diana's statue and I couldn't agree with you more. Yikes!

There is a very good (but old) feature film made in about 1942 about the life of Amy Johnson, called 'They Flew Alone' and starred Anna Neagle as Amy and Robert Newton as Jim Mollison. Oddly enough, Anna Neagle plays Amy with a Yorkshire accent, which she decidedly did not have in reality. Robert Newton was excellent as the womanizing Mollison - one of the biggest reasons for the Johnson-Mollison marriage ending. Mollison did not call himself the 'Playboy of the Air' without good reason.

6:58 The first solo flight across the Atlantic was Charles Lindbergh in 1927, not Jim Mollison. But Mollison did the first East-to-West Atlantic flight in 1932. It is strange listening to them talking on newsreel footage, as Amy was from Hull and Mollison from Scotland, but not a trace of a Yorkshire or Scots accent anywhere! Both sound like they went to Eton. The wonders of elocution lessons, which were almost compulsory those days for people in the public eye.

As an ATA re enactor, I admire this wonderful lady of the sky. along with her many comrades. However I'm of the opinion that dear Amy bailed out and landed in freezing cold water. Thereby dying from the cold before anybody could reach her. Her body may well have been pulled under the vessel, dragged and torn by the propellers. RIP Amy. Ps. As a Hull lad, born and bred - who actually attended the 'Amy Johnson High School' - I was fascinated to hear her speak in an accent that was... distinctly NOT what I would consider the accent I expected! Incidentally, it wouldn't surprise me if there was something nefarious about her demise.... The MoD has a history of obfuscation about wartime aviation when it comes to Hull. Until only a few years ago the MoD perpetuated the notion that Coventry was the 'most bombed city outside of London during WW2'. This was not true. Hull actually earned that dubious honour, but the MoD kept it quiet as they did not want to spread the fearful message that the Luftwaffe could reach so far north for fear of panicking the populace. In any case, another great video! Thank you!
