Definitely back to black and Valerie because the former was the very 1st song I've heard of her and the latter was the song the made me fall in love with her.
I’ve noticed a discrepancy in biopics about male musicians and female musicians. Biopics about men tend to focus on their career and ambition, whereas biopics about women always seem to hone in on whatever man she was involved with. And that was so obviously the focus of this Amy film because they clearly didn’t see any point in covering the last 2.5 years of her life because Blake wasn’t in it. They obviously had zero interest in celebrating Amy’s relationship with music because they didn’t seem bothered that she collaborated with Tony fucking Bennett - one of her musical heroes. It seems Hollywood has absolutely nothing to say about women if there’s no man in the picture, whether that be a boyfriend, husband or father.
This is true. A good biopic, while not perfect, would be Control. It focuses on the life, career and relationships of Joy Division and Ian Curtis. It's one of the better biopics.
I completely agree! Especially her father who enabled her to her literal grave! At EVERY chance her close friends wanted to get her the REAL HELP SHE DESPERATELY NEEDED, her father would sabotage it because "she's got to tour!" or "she's gotta do this and that!" She basically turned into a money machine for Mitch and this film is probably just another cash grab for Mitch especially if it shows him in this "best father ever" kind of light because he was not the best father to Amy. He left the family when Amy was around 8 or 9 for another woman and it really messed Amy up and not only that but the first time her record company and friends recommended Amy needed to go to rehab, he said "Nah! She's fine! She doesn't need it! She doesn't have a problem!" and was just in complete denial of his daughter's issues. She could have nipped her addiction/alcoholism in the bud (maybe. As a recovering addict/alcoholic myself, I know addiction is complex and you are never "cured") before she got really famous and it spiraled even more out of control but Amy was a self proclaimed "Daddy's girl" and whatever her dad said, went. He even brought the paparazzi to the island of St. Lucia when Amy was vacationing and she just wanted to get away and try to heal and he had people with cameras in her face constantly. Mitch was an awful father! And the reason he didn't like the "Amy" documentary is because it showed THE REAL MITCH!
Learning that Sam Taylor Johnson directed this makes sense as to why the movie feels like an abuser apologists dream. She related too much to them and couldn’t gage the seriousness of the issue.
@@sentientplant9658 I've hated Sam as a director and as a person ever since Nowhere Boy. The way she reduced John Lennon's relationship with his biological mother into flirtatious bantering with a hint of sexual tension was not only innacurate, but profoundly disturbing. Knowing that she was already in a relationship with Aaron, 17 at the time, when she decided that was the route she wanted to take with her characters just makes it worse.
@moonknight2865 You really have to go digging, though, and those films frequently don't have anywhere near as much money chucked at them than ones built off of pre-established franchises, or in the case of this film, real people barely ten years gone. Which is a colossal shame, because it means the creators just can't make what they want to make if they don't have the funding or the distribution power of a large studio. And then like you say, the original films that do get made really struggle to make their money back. There's still a fair amount of brilliant stuff trickling through, but so much these days is just not great, and it's almost always because some immensely rich fella in Hollywood decided they valued money over art. I just really miss the days when you could get basically anything greenlit, like it could be enormously shitty, but at least it felt like it had a soul. It's not great that I kind of miss Micheal Bay dropping a horrendous action film every few years because at least the explosions had ✨️passion✨️. Anyway, I don't think a full reversal of the current way of producing content is really feasible, but it would be really great if we, as a society made an effort to give artists who do it for the sake o it a chance. Also, sorry for the text, wall I do _not_ expect you to traipse through my ramblings 😭
One thing I really dislike when it comes to Amy's story, is that she was in a pretty healthy relationship with another man before she died. He is NEVER mentioned, even though she was planning on trying to marry him-it's mentioned in a few of the many books. I think his name was Reg Travis? Something like that? I hate how they act as if she was so heartbroken over Blake until the day she died. The most tragic thing about her story, at least to me, is that she was on a pretty big upturn before she passed- sober form hard drugs for three years, alcohol for 3 months; until she decided to drink that night. May she rest in peace, and may this movie flop like a motherf*cker.
the movie almost made it out to be like she died of drinking herself to death over BLAKE … OF ALL FUCKING PEOPLE STUPID BLAKE!! like that made me so mad, like you coulda told me blake wrote this movie and i would’ve 100% believed you.
Yep. Her partner was Reg Travis. From what I can tell from the doc, the drinking (at least from what her bodyguard said) was more of a response to how far she felt she had fallen from her music and the life she really wanted to lead, which she thought was pretty far because she wasn’t able to get pregnant and she felt like her on-stage singing career was over even though she had collabed with Tony Bennett and she was starting to turn herself around to a more positive direction. I agree with her friend Nick Shymansky - if they pinned down what the issue was during the Frank era, we might not have had the Back to Black era but she would still be here. 😢 Jazz (and let’s face it - most music) doesn’t thrive in a goldfish bowl atmosphere.
*Although this is a direct reply to you, it is essentially an encompassing reply, to anyone here. As someone who has always really, really liked her music, but knew nothing about her life other than* she had issues with drugs and alcohol, and died as a result, and died of alcohol intoxication, that's it, I did enjoy watching the film, and it did leave me with some more thoughts about her life. I think it's important to remember that not everyone is a hardcore fan of hers, and that there are far more people who know very little about her life, vs's those who know a lot. *Especially since she passed 13 years ago* and Netflix etc is most popular among younger people. A lot of people watching this film would have been five years old or younger when she passed, and not even alive when she became famous. *What I took from the film, was that the media played a huge role in contributing to her demise* And this is made very apparent in various ways, from the constant harassment from the paparazzi, and the strongly implied constant stories published about her etc, and them essentially motivating/causing or outright fabricating them in some instances. I also took away from it that Blake wasn't some monster, that the media gave the impression of at the time, and he like Amy had his issues, and that they both enabled one another, at least to a certain extent. *I also took from it that she had a very, very big heart* and that the death of her grandmother and her parents divorce etc really hit her hard, because of this, and this huge heart also caused her a lot of pain in her relationships. And I also took from it, that she did have a rebellious streak in her, that many young people do, and that the drive from these other factors, pushed her rebellious streak to her limits. (it talks about her being expelled at 14 etc) *I also took from it, that she really, really loved to make music* as most artists do, but particularly so with her, and she really didn't seem that interested in gaining fame, at least for the sake of gaining fame, and the film portrayed her, despite her issues, as a very grounded and down to earth person in many ways. *I get what you're saying that they left bits out, and I did think to myself, I wish, and think, that they did a limited series with 12 episodes or something rather than a film* Yet, I still enjoyed the film, as someone who knew very little to zero about her personal life. And was anything that I took away from the film, incorrect ? Did the media and paparazzi etc, not play a huge part in her suffering and demise ? Did they not create a cycle of stories, and harassment, that then created the stories, that they thought warranted more harassment of her ? Was Blake actually a monster, that caused her downfall, and did they not contribute to each others suffering ? Was she not a rebellious young person, from a young age, as many people are ? Did the death of her grandmother not hit her really hard ? Did she not have a huge heart ? etc etc etc ? *Again as someone who knew next to nothing about her personal life* I found it very interesting, in the sense of learning, and having a better understanding of how people in the limelight really suffer, and gave more of a motivation, to be a part of the collective that stops the media behaving this way. I also thought the actress who played Amy and all the other actors were brilliant, I never once stopped, and noticed, "they are acting" if that makes sense. And I never had the thought of "when is this going to be other" quite the opposite, I wish it went on for much longer, so I can't say I wasn't entertained. *Sorry, but as someone who is not a hardcore fan of Amy, but have always really, really liked listening to her music* I just don't understand the hate this film is getting. And a lot of people seem to like it, as it is rated 6.3 on IMDB and no 4 on Netflix. And considering how bad most films are today, it's actually a really good film in comparison in my opinion.
It's normal for addicts to have a slight upturn before they really go into full drive. I love the woman and her voice, but she was daft to not go to rehab and then to have the audacity to write a song about it, I guess that was just Amy all over lol
Ikr! She is wearing a (bad) wig and some winged eyeliner. She could be any girl dressed up as Amy Winehouse for Halloween, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
The only place where I saw a resemblance was on the movie poster, but I don't doubt there's some editing there. Tbh this girl looks more like Britney Spears... but I don't wanna give her ideas. People who actually somewhat look like Amy (not exactly, but like they could be related) are Lady Gaga and RAYE.
Amy would have hated the narrative of her being a sad victim. So many male rockstars make the same choices she did to abuse their bodies and ultimately die from it, but they are painted as misunderstood rebels. And they just paint her a sad tragedy. She chose to live that way
"If they made a biopic about Kurt Cobain..." PLEASE don't give them any ideas!!! 😭 But yeah the implication that Amy drank herself to an early grave because she heard that Blake knocked up his new girlfriend is absolutely insulting. No one but Amy and *maybe* her loved ones knew what was going on in her head that caused her to relapse. To make up a reason (especially one like that) is a really gross choice.
@@micheal4388 What Aaron and Sam do in their marriage is none of YOUR damn business! My friend wants Sam to direct her bio-pic and thus win her first OSCAR. And then you can eat dirt!
i hate it because while amy expressed how she didn’t like music of the era she still loved and respected girl groups. her biggest inspirations were salt n pepa, the shangri las, and the ronnettes.
i dont even know a lot about her, but this line and one before where she said "i want people to forget their troubles for 5 minutes" just seemed like the antithesis to her character. Rehab was playing in the background and thats 100 percent not a song that lets people forget their troubles.
The point about the paparazzi is so spot on. She could've moved to some gated community or luxury apartments where she wouldn't get bothered, but she chose to live with her mates in her own community and the media took that as an invitation to harass her day and night. For that not to make it into the movie AT ALL... huh? That was a defining feature of her fame, the pictures of paps outside her house were as iconic at the time as pictures of her herself, how do you tell this story at all without including that part?
It does make it into the film, there are one or two short sequences with paparazzi surrounding her but they never do it justice. They use it more as tension building and never take a moment to critique it in the film properly.
The worst part about this is they didn't use Amy's voice. For someone who had such a distinctive voice that cannot be replicated... Like that's tragic with what was produced. She was about the voice!
The way the movie is implying she died because she couldnt have a child is crazy. She was only 27! I mean we talk about a director who got pregnant by their 19 yr old boyfriend they groomed. Also the actress talking voice and accent sounds like Adele 😭😭
Amy couldn’t conceive a child because she was not having periods because of her Eating Disorder and addiction. It’s actually a very good thing she never had children. She was in no position to be a mother.
With this & ‘Blonde’, which was a really gross film about Marilyn Monroe, can we please stop disrespecting deceased icons by continuously relying on exploitation & shock value to tell their stories? These are real people, not characters. Their loved ones have every right to sue people who do this type of stuff imo.
For real. I think it's made evident when one of the only good ones in recent years was the Elton John one because he helped make it. When people are dead, everyone's just wildin'.
@@wavesorlando554nah its because elton john is a man lol. i can't think of any biopics about deceased male icons that are anywhere near as disrespectful and disgusting as all the ones about female celebrities.
Oh I agree with you strongly with Blonde being disgusting. I like many adore anything Marylin related and i used to really like Anna de Armas but that movie was incredibly disappointing, disrespectful and disgusting
@@wavesorlando554and this is exactly why they shouldn’t make these biopics about dead celebrities. like the most important thing is making sure the person it’s about would approve of it, and the only way to truly get that approval is if they’re alive
@@greysonholtzyeah. I'm not a fan, but have friends who are and in rpf circles (at least sane ones) there's a common rule not to mix up your art and speculation about real person with their real life. Some people don't follow it, but it's frowned upon because it harms pretty much everyone involved, one way or another. Hollywood don't have any reservations.
The thing that annoys me about this is that you CAN do real people fanfic movies, just don't call them biopics. Velvet Goldmine is real people fanfic about the glam rock movement, but they changed all the names.
They made 'Remembering Amy' because Mitch hated the first doc 'Amy' so much. Probably because they didnt sugar-coat his role in his daughters downfall.
I feel so bad for that guy. I read that they haven't spent more than a few days apart since marriage and it's affected his career because he won't do roles that are too far away from his family - i.e. his controlling spouse. Plus due to the weird relationship his public image has been affected. In general a sad situation.
my grandpa used to own a florist shop in london near where amy lived. she'd come in fairly regularly and have a chat, she even gave him her first record, and he said she was just one of the most lovely, friendly down to earth person. It's so sad that her life and personality has been watered down into this strange version of herself when there's just so much more. she was a beautiful talented human, full of life :(
They didnt even get her damn eyeliner right...the literal bare minimum..what an overall travesty, this "movie" should have never happened. So many possibilities and perspectives to explore and they give this ai scripted pos. Great video 💜
Marisa Abela I thought did a good job with the material. but the film played loose with history, and played down what total scumbags her dad and husband were, also the whole "Amy is unfulfilled because she's not a mother" was just patronising
@@lucamara6424 As a 26 year old who's 6 months older cousin is currently having a lot of baby drama and is in an abusive, unlawful marriage I'd say amen to that. One hasn't finished psychologically maturing until the age of 25 and then I find people need to adjust and plan their lives out a couple more years before they start with kids. Couples in their thirties having kids think about it much more wisely and have it mapped out better then most 20-something couples. I was always treated like the inferior one of the two of us and now I'm cackling as I'm growing up to be the more stable adult compared to her.
I'll be 41 in September! (I'm exactly 10 days older than Amy!) Last year when I turned 40, for a moment I felt a tinge of sadness that Amy didn't make it to 40 :(
I was a big Amy Winehouse fan in the 2000s and on the point of her being funny - whenever I think about her, I remember when she was on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and someone asked if her hair was her own, to which she replied "yeah, it's mine. I bought it." Her timing and delivery were so funny.
“Selena” is the only biopic I can think of that was released soon after the artist passing and is still beloved years later. Idk if I trust such a thing to be possible these days. This Sam woman creeps me out, and I’m fine to avoid anything she’s involved with.
"Ray" is a biopic I still love to this day about Ray Charles! Jamie Foxx really did such an amazing job! That is how you truly play someone who was alive and had an impact on the world
Why does Sam Taylor Johnson want to take liberties with someone’s actual real life story like … just write an original film?? And to not even talk to Amy’s family before writing g the script is bonkers
Any "biopic" that takes creative liberty is so bonkers to me. Like this was someone's actual life, and you're choosing to add and remove things to your liking to make it more exciting and get more money in the bank, and always out of misunderstood artists and their tragic life. It's disgusting to me.
@@limite4156 that's kinda what Quentin Tarantino understood and Hilary Duff did not in their respective movies featuring the character of Sharon Tate. Talk to the family!
Sam ststed that she DID talk to Amy's family---out of respect. Also, Sam did NOT write the screenplay---Matthew Greenhalgh did. Matt has worked with Sam on other projects as well (such as "Nowhere Boy", the bio-pic about John Lennon).
A bad impressionist* they could get genuinely good, believable, hardcore fans of they actually did legitimate casting calls for impersonators of the celebrity they're planning to make a biopic about, but instead they're gonna use the up and coming (if not even worse-an already established) actor with an almost half passing family member level resemblance (I guess Austin Butler is kind of an exception?) and call it a day. I cannot stand these movies.
I'm glad you touched on the way the media harassed her. I was a big fan of her BEFORE she died, and back then she was ridiculed, and people were so cruel. and then aftwarda when she died everyone was like "so sad. she was a genius!"
Right? The media was so cruel and I felt so bad for her. Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) & Amy herself described it best as a goldfish bowl - most artists can’t thrive like that. She had her demons and her faults and the media and even her production company and some governments (*cough* the US *cough*) were unreasonable - two things can be true at once. The thing I love about Amy was that she kept it real. The way she reacted to JT’s song still makes me chuckle 😂 The other artist that comes to mind about the cruel nature of media is Aaliyah believe it or not. Aaliyah’s very beloved right now but back when she was alive, she was heavily criticized. Even when she died (and I can remember this), the press thought her funeral was too extreme. Excuse me, she died young and was a great talent - of course the tribute’s gonna be massive! There’s a RU-vid video I saw that broke this down as well.
Honestly I feel a little bad for Marisa Abela, like how on earth could she replicate the power and talent Amy possessed vocally? If I were in her position I would have asked to lip sync.
She was greedy & fame hungry for taking this role, I don’t feel bad for her at all. She was probably the 6th choice after asking more famous actresses who had better sense.
sometimes is nit just about the look but the attitude the way they portayed the character they played .. for Bob yes he doesn't look like him but he did him justice .. plus he was chosen by one of Bob Marley son i believe so..
@@justlive2809 I agree, I haven't given either a fair shot but just seeing clips of this bio pic, the actress lacks all personality and attitude of Amy.

I'm honestly not surprised it's an expoititive mess, considering it's from Sam Taylor-Johnson. What the fresh hell does she mean, she wants creative freedom with someone's life story? She has some mad ego on her, I can't stand her. Why is she like this? Why won't anyone think of the children? Anyway, great video. I won't be watching this film. Rocketman was brilliant.
Just reminds me of her reaction to Paul McCartney's one criticism of Nowhere Boy, if you could call it that, that John Lennon never hit him, and she basically went "It's a FILM Paul. It's not real." Like imagine someone saying they could do whatever they liked with the memory of your dead best friend?

Ironically the only biopic me and my mom have ever owned on VHS (if my memory serves me correctly). I like to say my mom brainwashed me into becoming a girl group supremacist.
Amy Winehouse's death is still an open wound in my soul. I refuse to watch this movie, as I refused to watch that documentary nobody could shut up about for months after it came out, but I think I can handle this. I really think I can...
Asif Kapadia actually did a really good job. I feel like he did a respectful tribute to Amy and her talents as well as called out all the BS she endured from the media and the people who failed her. I highly recommend it

I could write an essay about just how much I hate Sam Taylor Johnson. Hollywood elites can just hit backspace on 15-17 and change it to 18 to talk about when they met and suddenly everything they do is fine guys because don’t worry it’s an adult! He was 18 when he auditioned aka ADULT- You don't have to spread lies! People are mostly hating on Sam because she’s a woman and they’re jelaous. Jay-Z and Beyonce are called couple goals when he started dating her at 19- same age as Aaron started dating Sam. Unfortunately, there was a very real moment in 1990 where Kurt Cobain was hanging out with Kathleen Hanna, the singer of Bikini Kill, in his motel room. When Kurt fell asleep, Kathleen wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the wall with a Sharpie. So the scene would be as dorky as you described it even if they stayed true to real events.
Fun fact: Courtney Love has said that Brad Pitt approached her several times seeking the rights to do a Kurt Cobain biopic and she denied him multiple times, she says it's the reason she was fired from an acting role once! You can bet the second she dies, Hollywood will jump on that
Yup and there's an interview she was doing for the movie and she said he "oozed sexuality from every orface of his body".... about the child she was employing. Everyone knows their "love story" was a lie and she openly abused him
I dont think that actress even looked like Amy...she didnt looklike Amy at all... Lady Gaga looksmore like Amy , Gaga is petite like Amy aswellbut I agree that even with a good actress thismovie shouldnt have been made
I could only laugh when he brought up that she passed 13 years ago and it feels disrespectful, imagine how Selena fans felt when barely a year after she died, jlo was playing her in a movie. Salma Hayek was offered the role but felt it was gross, but of course jlo took it lol
On the other hand, it was produced by the family to ensure she wasn’t forgotten and JLo did take the time to get to know them. That movie also had a depth & nuance most biopic films have a tendency to miss - that line about being more Mexican than the Mexicans and more American than the Americans was so relatable. Granted, my ancestry’s the one across the ocean but it’s still very true! 😂
they used to make good biopics back in the day like the ones about ray charles, james brown and johnny cash. i can't stand current biopics these days, they are so hollow
When the movie ends I was so surprised, I literally said "that's it?" to myself when I watched it (and the movie is already about 2 hours long). And also, THEY DIDN'T EVEN SHOW A PICTURE OF THE REAL AMY AT THE END, why make a biopic about someone and not even show how they looked like it real life?? in every biopic that came before this movie, no matter shitty or not they at least showed a picture of the real life person at the end.
I must say that the end was very tastefully done. Her reciting „Love is a losing game“ in front of the mirror in her beloved Camden house and then walking up into „higher spheres“ with the lights from the windows taking over while music from Nick Cave plays was incredibly powerful. I would not have wanted to see what actually happened to Amy. By the way, the Elvis biopic didn’t show his end either. Edit: But showing the real Amy at the end would have been awesome.
@@rosemimi973 I agree but I feel there were parts that needed to be in the movie like her vacation in St Lucia when (according to the documentary) her father forced her to take pictures/give autographs even though she didn't want to (but I guess they wouldn't manage to do that as long as her dad is alive) and also she did manage to be in a healthy relationship towards the end of her life, and the movie made it looks like her death from the addictions as a result of a heartbreak (at least in my opinion). I have to problem with the ending in her house, I just felt the movie needed to be longer.
Why are all the biopics of the last 10 years giving lifetime movie resemblance casting? She looks like she was plucked off a subway platform and told “you’ll do”.
These films are SUPPOSED to be a bit of “behind the scenes” or from their perspective. Not a recreation of big moments. I wanna see Amy backstage after she won her Grammy, I wanna see her hiding in cars from tabloids. This film is useless.
When i first heard the actress talk in the whinehouse biopic i said "yuck". As i continued to look at the trailer i thought "this looks horrible ". I don't even consider myself a fan. Rehab is the song i know her for. As a recovered heroin addict i felt her pain I thought she was beautiful i loved her style and voice was magnificent. Theres no way this movie does her justice
Not the biggest Amy Winehouse fan. Never listened to her, but she was a memorable character in our lives. I remember reading newspaper articles about her as a kid, and I saw one where she rescued someone at the beach from drowning - THAT'S a character defining moment for what the media labelled a "white-trash junky artist". Why didn't they include that in the film?
@@MirrorminD2001 exactly. The reason why (for example) the Selena biopic is beloved compared to the Netflix show is because it was well researched and clearly a labor of love. It also helped that they shot it not long after she passed so they could get the freshest and strongest take on her life compared to the majority of films that tend to focus more on recreating moments rather than encouraging emotion.
I think biopics that are more about the events or themeof something can be fun (Eg Catch Me If You Can) but the traditional type of biopic really needs to go imo.
I still can't belive a movie about Amy got produced, and a shit one at that. This is clearly a vanity project for the director and actress. I hope this wins a Razzy for worst movie of 2024 next year cause mama, its hot garbage
As a long time Amy Winehouse fan, I knew from the moment they made the trailer, it was gonna disrespect my girl Amy in the greediest, sleeziest way possible
I feel like Lady Gaga would've done perfect. She has the funny personality that Amy had, and yeah her age was an issue. But I'd prefer someone older over someone that looks nothing like her. Lady Gaga also has an insane voice. This could've been a good movie if it was a different director and different actors.
Like this guy said the idea of an Amy Winehouse biopic in itself is bad. To top it off she had a personality and a presence that is very difficult to replicate.
As a fan, the areas that need more context in Amy’s life are her relationship to her music and songwriting, as you pointed out, her family, and her band/other celebs. There’s this rumor that Jay Z and Beyonce offered for her to live with them toward the end of her life, I think she had a pretty close relationship with them. I think she was well liked by a lot of American pop/RnB/rap artists and that’s not discussed enough. I’m sure she distanced herself eventually, but I’m really curious about that . Also one thing that stands out from her live performance was her relationship with her band and the fact that they all pretty much performed live. What were rehearsals like? What was she like when she was in director mode? How did they support her when she was at her lowest? They were there through it all and I feel like we know so little about them. Where are they now? They were all really talented dancers, singers, and instrumentalists. And finally, what about her family? They’re very closed-lipped about Amy, but I think she loved them a lot they just had normal issues and pains. I think that would be the hardest to get information on.
I agree - from what I can tell from the doc, she was very close to Nas, Mos Def (yasiin bey), Questlove, and Mark Ronson. I also really wanted to hear more from Salaam Remi and Rafael Sadiqqi. Clearly hip hop and R&B were her strongest influences and I would’ve loved to hear more of that side of the story. It felt like they were still very close until Amy’s tragic end considering that battle rap voicemail.
Exactly! I remember one of them mentioning she spent so much time listening to jazz you should refer to her as a doctor of jazz. She lived for the music. She once said she'd be happy to just sing other people's music in small clubs for the rest of her life, because the music fulfilled her, and the evening before she passed she was said to have a drum session on her own.... so yeah. Also, I believe people said she was very caring, like cooking for people, even giving snacks to the paps who stood in front of her door.... Yes, Blake had a big impact on her life, but the relationship with him was just a catalyst
Every time I think about how 13 years is far too soon for this movie to have been made, I remember how Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was tragically killed 03/31/1995 and the Selena biopic came out 03/21/1997. NOT EVEN 2 FULL YEARS LATER. And with the fact that we can recognize that 13 years is too soon for the Amy biopic here in 2024, it truly makes me wonder if anyone was just as shocked/concerned (if not more) about the Selena biopic timing back in the 90's.
I normally don’t care what Hollywood does but I was very upset when this was announced, I love Amy whinehouse so much, they should be ashamed of themselves.
as soon as it was announced I knew I'd never watch it, a few years ago me, my dad (also a big Amy fan) and my 90yr old grandad went to the exhibition put on by her brother and sister in law about her. The statement of the exhibition was that Amy was much bigger than her low points and never became that Hollywood cliched. To even think you could sum up her life in a paint by numbers film is insulting. It's a real shame for the actress as well who no doubt is going to experience the brunt of the hate as people aren't smart enough to realise she's just the actress, and I've seen her in another film and she was captivating but no body could embody Amy. Nobody should try
I saw the trailer for this biopic in the theater last Thursday, and it took so much strength for me not to boo it. Amy Winehouse was so singular that anyone else pretending to be her hits so wrong. And I'm not a super fan, just a casual fan, but, from my limited knowledge, I could tell the filmmaker had gotten the entire vibe completely wrong
There is nothing funnier than a director of a film about one of the most beloved singers of all time basically saying in an interview "Yeah I met the lead actress and she really couldn't sing but I wanted to hire her. She worked on the singing though" WHY ARE YOU ADMITTING THAT? It's the press tour for "Don't worry Darling" all over again. Any PR is good PR right?
Amy Winehouse is and will always be one of the GOATs of the 21st century. Her appeal as a star was that she COULDNT be emulated…so making a film about her using an actor and one who can’t sing (because Amy was notorious for being a harsh critic of vocalists) just shows how little they bothered to understand the poor woman…. Also. It’s only been a decade since her death 🫠🫠 Please let her rest in peace
Channel 4 (UK fans) were able to watch a Amy Winehouse documentary which came out in like 2019. That was really good as it DID speak to her parent's, close friends etc & DID feel like it provided more about her true personality. The most harrowing was when she was going "cold turkey" with the drugs & admitting that "life is too boring without them". She may have had ADHD/autism & was VERY intelligent (just common accent) so drugs/booze is common (slow down brain).
I do like that a lot of the public (esp in the uk) are so fiercely protective of Amy's legacy. She was so special. I remember watching her as a kid no other artist has ever quite captured me the way she did or broke my heart the way she did
Her corpse is barely fucking cold. I grew up with Amy Winehouse, I think I probably knew about her for longer than I didn't. There's nothing about her story that I think should be turned into a movie
