The biopic 'Back To Black' follows Amy Winehouse's rise to fame, marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil, and struggle with addiction. It's being released in cinemas today, but friends of the late singer have slammed it for being too sympathetic to Blake.
Blake joins GMB to discuss his thoughts on the film and the portrayal of his and Amy's relationship, and reveals that he would love to speak to Amy's father Mitch Winehouse, particularly after watching the new film about Amy's life.

I actually feel sorry for him, he described it perfectly when he said her death has been his cross to bare, he has suffered with addiction and all the blame can’t be put on him. Amy already had an addictive personality before she met Blake. Blake was one of her addictions, from which stemmed some of the best song writing of all time. I felt it was courageous of him to walk away from the relationship after receiving counseling in prison and realising it was toxic co-dependancy. Just wish Amy lived long enough to find a relationship that could have nurtured her and to realise her dream of having a baby. All so sad. But, I don’t blame Blake.

I knew Blake after he split with Amy. The only reason I’m commenting is because of some of the horrible comments here, although I’m very glad to read all the nice ones. Blake had a lot of flaws when I knew him, he was arrogant and cocky, but it was so clearly a facade to cover his insecurities. He loved Amy and she loved him, even after their divorce they spoke for hours on the phone and he was so devastated when she died he nearly killed himself in his effort to numb the pain. Yes, he’s done some awful things due to his addiction, but that kind of regret and guilt only makes it so much harder to get clean and he’s managed it in spite of that; now he has to live every day knowing the things he did without anything to numb those feelings of guilt anymore. I didn’t particularly like Blake when I knew him, but I’m thrilled to see him doing well and I wish him all the best.

I don’t know him but I know enough to see a pattern they had a lot of issues and because of that brought out the worst in each other he doesn’t deserve the blame and you can tell he’s crippled from it if it wasn’t Blake it would be someone else and he’s handling it with such grace that a lot of people couldn’t.

I knew Blake around 1999/2000 when he was a hairdresser in Kentish Town. He was very well mannered and full of positive boyish and youthful energy, almost naive in a way. Very well spoken. Very interested in others, curious about the world. He never once appeared to be interested in the fame game or being the centre of attention in any way. Camden was party central back in the late 90's early 2000's, and he would have started partying hard at that time. He was very impressionable and didn't seem to have a lot of self confidence.

I mean, that’s the hand you’re dealt with dealing with morning show hosts. Either fake niceties and platitudes or insane condescension or passive aggression. They seem the stock that don’t even believe addiction is a complex impulse and mental vulnerability. Latent mental illness or trauma informing the habit or the Epigenetic factor behind it. They see it as a sinister and selfish choice made in a completely lucid state (which obviously is not the case) and you gleefully invite others into the mess with you.

I was in a relationship with an addict from 2017-2019. During that time, I spiraled into my own addiction. Addicts aren't able to help themselves out of the abyss, much less anyone else. I completely understand when he explains how he didn't have anyone looking out for him either. I'm glad to see he made it through to the other side and doing okay. Sometimes there is no "bad guy." Sometmes two broken people find each other and are the worse for it. I've been sober since July 2022.

Amy was a woman with mental health issues, but she was successful and an adult who made her own decisions. Neither of them were clearly in the right mind during their relationship, so exasperated each others addictions during that time. Blake needs to be able to move in this. You all know if she continued to live, the newspapers would have been ripping into her probably even now.

Honestly as much as I love Amy, I think she came from a place of hurt and not feeling complete. She was young, naive and found someone that made her feel whole. They both were young and probably had different struggles of their own. We can't blame Blake. As much as we wish Amy was still here, she was already losing a battle she had within herself for a long time. Congrats to Blake for changing his life around, and RIP to Amy. We still miss you and will never forget you 💗

Blake was never to blame. Amy and Blake were probably suffering from BPD and they spurred each other on in good ways and in bad ways. I believe Amy would have hated the way Blake was portrayed in the film, even though it's sympathetic, because to her he was perfect. That's all that matters. Anyway, it's great to see him looking well and speaking so eloquently.

You’re so right! And the paparazzi terrified, stalked and harassed Amy constantly, which greatly impacted on her mental health. The media constantly made a mockery of her and exploited her, but you don’t see any of them apologising for their hand in her demise. I would love to listen to a podcast by Blake about Amy, and maybe he could even interview other people she worked with or had in her life.

As someone who has been in direct contact with people with drug addiction for many many years, this whole story and especially this interview breaks my heart..it's beautiful to see him on a better path now but the past had got to be so much darker..as he said, addiction is indeed nothing to seperate between black and white..addiction might be the worst thing to happen to someone because it rots not only the drug addict but the whole environment around them and in Amys case it could not have been more heartbreaking knowing what an amazing human and artist she was..Rest easy Amy❤

He probably wasn't the cause of the addiction, but he definitely contributed to her downfall and enabled her drug addiction and I think he tried to keep her down because he was down. I wished she had the strength to leave and stay gone but its hard when someone keeps you pumped up on drugs, and emotionally oppressed.
