If possible, I find it more heartbreaking hearing Hartnell say "I don't want to go". It was sad to see David go, but he had his health and a long great career in front of him. Hartnell didn't have either.
@Alpha121198
@Alpha121198 7 лет назад
Seamus Burke I think that is also in part because of the context of these two instances. David's line was as the Doctor, a character. Here we see a person, a man who loves his job with all his heart, wishing that he didn't have to go so soon.
@thoranzalarvhazen4250
@thoranzalarvhazen4250 7 лет назад
They actually wrote that line for the 10th doctor as a nod to this. This wasn't just for the show, his family claims this is what actually happened. He wept, "I don't want to go" for hours.

Its is indeed and a great film overall. I thought it was fab. However, we should realise that it is entirely fiction. Everything. We have no record of hat Waris Hussian, Sidney Newman, Verity Lamkbetr. Everything they say in this programme is fiction. So yea, good overall but not probably not true in any way whatsover. And yes, I do love it. I just don't mistake it from being fiction to fact. It's a dram not a documentary. Just in case anyone might think this is true :)
@Fitzroyfallz

redcardinalist actually, it's very accurate (it's called a docudrama, btw). They spoke to a lot of people who were there and went over records and old interviews and things like that.

Louise Culmer I think everyone has "their" Doctor. I was too young for Hartnell. I have vague memories of Pat Troughton, but it was the excellent Mr. Jon Pertwee that got me hooked. Some of those stories are being repeated on the Horror Channel at the minute, great to see them again. :)

if Bill Hartnell hadn't gotten sick and had to leave, doctor who wouldn't be around today. They overcame his leaving with the concept of regeneration, which has kept the series alive for so long. William Hartnell is, in that sense, the most important doctor there ever was.

Indeed, when I first watched this it was sad and emotional. It's a well-put together special with Saving Mr Banks-esque vibes. Honestly even though it was sad I was really holding it in...until Matt Smith's surprise and symbolic cameo. Oh god all the feels. I'd like to imagine for you two though it was a double whammy since now Matt Smith is also finished with his role as the Doctor. If ever they want to bring the First Doctor back somehow, David Bradley's the man to do it.

Truly this was a brilliant dramatic recreation, David Bradley played the role of William so well I thought he was him.. Where the hell was his BAFTA for this? I felt sad during the last third of the movie.... you could tell that Hartnell wanted to try his best but time was catching up to him... and the last bit just brought my family and I to tears. It was as if he had a glimpse into the future and knew it was in safe hands.

Hartnell also introduced the idea of the science of Time Travel being like magic: Matt in that scene even copies Hartnell's holding of two of the TARDIS instruments as the way he controls the flight. It's something we still have, with the idea of the TARDIS controls being keyed to the user. Several people have flown the TARDIS, and some more have thought that they did, while outside forces can sometimes also guide it... It's fun to work it out, actually.

Kennedy was killed on November 22, 1963. Doctor Who aired on November 23, 1963. So unfortunate that these two events happened so close to each other. Also, last year, while filming this documentary, the guy who designed The Daleks died. So sad. :(

I know the scene where Hartnell says "I don't wanna go" is heartbreaking, but I cry much more at the scene right before where the policeman tells him "You're in the way, you need to move along sir" because it perfectly encapsulates what he's thinking at the time; doctor who will keep going, but he's in the way of its progress and needs to move along.

***** A common rumour states that news coverage of the killing caused the interruption of the normal television schedule, too, so that on 23rd November, 1963, one day after the assassination, the first episode of the first Doctor Who story, An Unearthly Child, aired five minutes late; however it actually went out only ninety seconds later than scheduled. As the episode was not seen in parts of the country due to a power outage, it was rebroadcast the following week; it is often stated that it was replayed due to the assassination coverage, but this too has been debunked.

@ClayRealms 10 лет назад
I agree with that. The Day of the Doctor had so many missed opportunities and was quite underwhelming and this really got me interested in classic Doctor Who and was entertaining to watch. It did annoy me at the end when Matt Smith showed up though because I felt like he was stealing the spotlight and just giving something for people who don't respect the old Doctor Who to get excited over. It was not needed. It got in the way of the fact that we were supposed to appreciate Hartnell, but I hope that most of us didn't care about Matt Smith appearing just to get a wider audience range.
@georgercop
@georgercop 10 лет назад
ClayRealms I don't think Matt Smith appearing was to "get a wider audience range", since I've always been under the impression that Smith was there to represent the potential that Hartnell had always seen in the show, and the future he foresaw the show having. I thought it was a nice touch, but still doesn't detract from David Bradley's performance. I thought he fit the role of Hartnell like a glove and played the part magnificently.
@cah137-y4s
@cah137-y4s 10 лет назад
Two thoughts on this: 1) While I thought this was very good, I felt TDotD was far better. In a way, the anniversary was divided into three parts: the celebration of the show's creation (this), the celebration of the Doctors (The Light at the End), and the celebration of the show as a whole (The Day of the Doctor), and personally I just felt that the final one was more enjoyable. But I'm not here to insult your opinion, simply to offer mine. 2) I actually felt that Matt's appearance was a beautiful touch. As Hartnell prepares to leave the show forever (or rather, until The Three Doctors), he looks up and sees his legacy. Matt, without saying a word, communicates the message that "It's 50 years later, and I'm still here. I'm still here because of what you did. You are remembered. You will always be remembered."

Hartnell loved playing the Doctor because it gave him a new image as an actor. He always played crooks and military figures and the Doctor (his Doctor anyway) was an old grandfather type who was out to fight injustice. That was why Hartnell progressed in this picture from a grumpy old bastard who mistreated poor Judy to a sweet old guy who was good with children.

That ending was authentic, i have NO doubts that he cried when it was over because William Hartnell was the first ever Doctor Who fan. This film as wonderfull as it is took some dramatic liberties, he went into it with no complaints or reservations. His son in law took the script to him, he read it cover to cover, he smiled and looked up and said 'I WANT THIS!". Despite the ravages of his bad health his wife said that getting to put the Doctors suit back on for 'The Three Doctors' was one of the happiest memmories in his declining years.

The emotions are more easily felt and reciprocated, the reactions aren't as....tainted? glazed perhaps...when drunk, and personally I think one can enjoy the moment more thoroughly when uninhibited by 'beer goggles' so to speak. nice video. :)

I feel how hurtful it was when you saw Matt because if it's the first time you see it it's AFTER his regeneration....

They had to go there, didn't they. Having Hartnell say "I don't want to go"? Oh ... well. You guys are awesome. I've decided.

Sydney Newman also was involved in the creation of "The Avengers"; speaking of which, there's a good series you could do reactions to!

This is one of the few reaction videos I've ever watched. Your reactions were so genuine and I cried at the same parts you did. I am proud to call you fellow Whovians.

15:09 The incredible, unexpected moment where the First Doctor paid tribute to the Eleventh. A fantastic moment where we thank all the great actors who carried the torch after William Hartnell, and to all those who help to carry on the great legacy he helped to create.

As far as specials for the anniversary, An Adventure in Time and Space really was the most emotional and poignant. And of course it made for another great reaction video from the loveliest geeks on youtube.

Good reaction vid! I saw this very show last night on BBC America, and I had the same feels as you gals did ('cept for Matt Smith's cameo, when I was just laughing, crying, and applauding at the same time)!

Waris Hussain directed the film "Melody" which is not only is incredidbly sad-sweet but has great scenes of sixties London (see also "Up The Junction")

I so hope they use that last line in the 2017 Christmas special somehow. "Someday I will return. " OMG that would be perfect.

That cameo from Matt at the end could easily have clashed terribly...but it was absolutely perfect. Mark Gatiss pitched the film perfectly.. ..and if David Bradley DOESN'T get a television BAFTA nomination for his performance, it would be criminal!

I started to watch the classic Doctor Who last year, and then I watched this film, right after the first Doctor, with the original scenes still in my heart and mind. I felt so excited that I had to watch the film about ten times, and I'm still moving. Thank you girls for sharing this, you know how it feels. Cheers from Argentina, from another space and time.

No idea if you will see this post as you have so many followers but as with many other people "I don't want to go" brought tears to my eyes. Bill H. loved being the Doctor as did Tom and David. I'm sure the other actors did too but of them all those three stand out as loving the part. Love to you both. Simon, BOS And yes I subscribed:)
