The funniest thing to me is that when Missy died everyone was like "well the Master is dead forever", but my first thought was "how many episodes until he comes back?"

@@user-vh6ts9uf6c What really sucks about who when it's badly written is that it means good concepts, reveals, villains, ideas, are wasted on mediocre, poorly written episodes. Same with good actors, plenty of characters, and some doctors who could have been great through and through in any situation, spent much of their time in terribly written episodes. Because doctor who is good at its core, which means when it's bad it's just counting down the wasted episodes, villains of the week, stories, characters, concepts until it stops fucking up. Ideas that they'll struggle to justify trying again if and when they get back on the upswing.

I mean, the last time we saw The Master, it was when they were Missy seemingly dying properly after being redeemed.

The master is probably the only rival who has literally died and come back over 30 times without Regenerating other than the yana thing and maybe once or twice during his beginning incarnations

I always see praise for simm’s master, but good lord do I LOVE how dhawan played the character. Missy is in her own league but he definitely comes close for best master incarnation. This reveal & the yana reveal are probably some of my favorite scenes in any show, ever

I have not watched most of Chibnal's Doctor Who episodes, and I haven't watched much of the lady what's her name doctor. That being said, this was an extremely stale reveal. I assume it's meant to be an incarnation of The Master before prime minister saxon master (I don't know the actor's name) and certainly before Missy (who is, in my opinion, the BEST Master or "Mistress" lol), but I think it was a disappointing reveal. It seems like an incredibly odd choice to bring the Master back as a bad guy after having the whole arc with Missy (which I LOVED). A lot of this opinion hinges on my admiration for that arc. You cannot establish incredibly deep motives for a character, then back peddle and turn them back into a stock villain. That's just poor writing. Even if it is meant to be pre-Saxon master, and if it is meant to be after Missy, that's even worse. I can't imagine even Chibnal is that bad at writing Doctor Who. p.s. The Doctor really can't diffuse a clearly very simple bomb? That seems like an incredibly weak plot convenience device. Why is it that this Doctor always seems scared, unprepared, and incredibly inept?

@@johnmathewson6630 As for that last bit, I think we all have an idea as to why. Now, I haven't reached her episodes yet, but in every clip and scene I've been exposed to, it seems like this doctor is just is not very good at being the doctor sometimes. Not acting-wise, she seems like she had the doctor down fine, but I mean the writing. Plenty of scenes where a previous doctor would have prevailed, this doctor fails for no reason but to move the plot along. Now, that could just be standard bad writing, but it's either a terrible coincidence, or more likely, writer bias that the instant the doctor is a woman she's suddenly not even half as clever or capable. Either way, it's incredibly frustrating. I'm not even sure if I'll make it through most of this if everything I've seen is indicative of the overall quality. I've not seen his first episode, but here's hoping the latest doctor has a better run of things.

I had the privilege of not having missy being the master spoilt, but then again Spyfall wasn’t spoilt either so I can’t decide. It has to be Spyfall cause there were no hints to it until the very end

The slow burn reveal of Missy wins in my book. There were hints and clues, but I was still gobsmacked when it first aired.

Skyfall, because nobody expected that, he was introduced as an ally who had Doctor's trust, he totally mindfuck us and Sacha Dhawan plays totally differently after the reveal, then tension is better in that scene I think.

Dark Water was predictable in that most older fans realized Missy was the Master when she said "My heart belongs to the Doctor" and they revealed the cybermen. Literally NO ONE caught on that O was The Master until the plane scene. So...Spyfall

The Master is like The Daleks or The Cybermen, every time you think they're gone for good they'll find a way back.

@@bsimester2010 true, I doubted it would genuinely be permanent, but when you specifically construct a seemingly unsurvivable situation for a character, in this case Missy having her regen prevented, you can't just have them show up later with no explanation. As it stands, there are no retcons in place and so, currently, there is no plausible way she could survived to become the new master

It turns out Missy did not destroy herself when she took out John Simm's Master. Using a device called the Elysium field (forbidden Timelord tech), Missy was able to get a new regeneration cycle. Plus when a new incarnation comes of a Timelord, not just their physical appearance changes but so does their personality and the Master has always been known to be insane. Just because Missy was redeemed once, doesn't mean her/his next body and personality is going to be the same. The Master always goes after the previous just like the Doctor so no, this Master is post-Missy.
